My sister is coming over to meet me in the Big Apple for a week around December and I need some advice on where to stay. Neither of us have been there before and we're not loaded ;)
Any recommendations for reasonable-ish hotels downtown or ones a subway ride away?
Thanks

Stayed in Hotel 31 on East 31st Street between Park Avenue and Lexington in September.
It is very central (less than five minutes to Empire State Building), clean and reasonably priced. We paid about US$60 per person a night including tax.
We had twin rooms. The bathrooms (two per floor) were shared by the other rooms on the floor (about 12 rooms per floor) but they were always clean and I only had to queue for them once in the week we stayed there.
We booked through hostelworld.com
Enjoy New York; it's a great city.
