new york is amazing, i was there for the first time last year and i'm heading there again the week after next actually...

i was there for 4 days the last time, there's loads to see and i hadn't much time so i spent one day doing one of the city bus tours around manhattan which i really recommend. it stops at ground zero, empire state building, statue of liberty, chinatown, wall street, 5th avenue, broadway, hop on hop off thing so you can spend as long as you like at all the sights.

you should go up to the top of the empire state building at night, the queue is way less than it is during the day and the view is really impressive!

i found it much cheaper than i expected, way less than home...like food and shopping is cheaper than home. i stayed at the hotel pennsylvania opposite penn station, not a great place to be honest but a bit cheaper than other hotels and great location!! this time we're staying at the holiday inn on 5th avenue which i heard is nice enough.

anyway have fun, i'm sure you'll have a ball :D

last january my sister hardly left her hotel because of the snow and freezing cold temperatures.
Winter in NY is pretty but a bitch to get around.

How long are you staying there for and how much spending money are you planning to bring? If you're only there for a weekend or something then go all out. It'll be a laugh anyway no matter what but it is the best city in the world if you have the money to burn!!!
A friend from school here got a suite in the Waldorf Astoria for two nights last summer. It was a birthday presents from her folks. Anyway, the hotel is expensive but it's amazing and the best part was the perks from staying there. The concierge on duty there if you make friends with him can get you on the VIP list almost anywhere. Going in VIP for free is really cool if you've some money to burn and want some storys to tell. You'll be drinking in a roped off section with the super wealthy or famous. Also, if its a lads weekend staying there will help big time with the ladies. I had my g/f with me but some of the boys from home I arranged to meet down town were pulling women left right and center saying they were staying at the Astoria! Like I said, if it's that sort of trip you're looking to have?
As others said though, no matter where you go or stay you'll have some laugh in NYC! If you high roller it though you'll have some once in a lifetime storys. -AmadeusDC-

era, mid town is a tourist trap, all looks the same. See the sites but don't stay there as it's downtown where all the trendy areas are. Much better vibe, cool bars and restaurants, better shops. midtown is crawling with plastic irish bars.

I could give ya 100 tips that you'll read and forget in the frenzy over there but this you'll remember; If you intend on going up the empire state buildng, go to Jack Dempseys on 33rd (possible 34th st), just around the corner. Have a pint, ask the barman for a VIP pass for the tour. It'll save you 2 hours of queueing and it's free.
