Has anyone been to Iceland? I'm heading there in a couple of weeks for a four day mini city break. I've wanted to go there since I was a kid and was ecstatic when I got a good offer on the Internet.
We have paid for some optionals already - Blue Lagoon/Northern Lights and a South Coast Tours.
Just wondering what else you guys recommend. We'll be based in Rekjavik and because it's November their handy sightseeing tour bus is out of operation.
Any good restaurants/bars?

think you need to be over 21, they are quite strict on it.

I am over 21 - am approaching the big 23 soon (although, I don't look it).
What makes you think I'm under 21?

You are so lucky, its one of my top 5 places i want to see. been dying to get there for years.

i went to iceland back in may for 6 days and had a great oul time there...the blue lagoon is amazing, best part of the trip by far. very handy cos it's on the way to/from keflavik airport so you can get a bus that drops you off there and picks you up again a few hours later.
would've loved to have seen the northern lights but sadly it was the wrong time of year for that. i did the golden circle tour, and the tour that goes around the reykanes peninsula, they're both well worth doing, you see geysers, volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls...also did a whale watching trip, might be a bit cold now for that but it was ace! dog sledding would be really cool to do aswell, but again i was told that may wasn't the right time of year for that sort of thing.
reykjavik itself i found a bit disappointing...don' t get me wrong it's a really nice city, great shopping, but very expensive and not really a lot to do there during the day (nightlife is great tho) if you're in iceland for four days i'd recommend spending a day looking around the city and the other three days on day trips out into the sticks.
anyway that was my experience of the place, you'll have a great time :D

Was in Iceland 2 years ago for the Iceland Airwaves Festival which is on at the end of October - not sure if you'll catch the end of it?
I think it's worth hiring a car and touring around yourself exploring the weird landscape. You have to go to Geyser (obviously) and just down the road Gulfoss (big frozen waterfall).
Iceland is very expensive so bring lots of money. Reykjavik is like a small town so it's easy to find the cool spots. Damon Albarn has a bar on the main street that is quite nice. It's worth getting Time Out Iceland/Reykjavik
The trick to staying warm is lots of layers. It's not that cold but the wind would freeze half your face off.
Definitely one of the best places I've visited - kind of like going to another planet. Have a great time!
do you get a stamp in you passport??

Before making too many plans, you'll want to check out how much daylight you'll get. This month should still have plenty and even the start of November, but by the end of next month, you could be looking at only 5 hours a day. That will decide how much getting out of Reykjavik you are likely to do.

Thanks for your tips everyone.
I agree Jungle - I think it will be like another planet. Ever since I learned about Nordic countries and Vikings etc in Primary school, I've wanted to go to Iceland.
I'll definitely wrap up well. I get cold on the best of days so you can imagine what I'll feel like.
I just can't wait for the whole experience.

Was there 2 yrs ago. Expensive is one word that comes to mind, especially for drink. Stock up on duty free before you go, if not don't worry, Keflavik airport allows you to buy duty free when you land.
Was there in May,where it was bright as hell there, so I seriously don't know how much day-light you have......Rented a car there for a day, cost abit, but was able to go to the Blue Lagoon, the waterfall at Selfoss, both in the southern area of Iceland, and then done the golden circle tour by ourselves. got in the geysir and waterfalls at Gullfoss

That's a bit extreme, isn't it? Actually shaking with jealousy because some random unknown person on the internet has decided to go to Iceland on their holidays.
Fair play to them, and I hope they enjoy it, whoever it was. No need to take it all so seriously. Now, cancer - that's serious.

any truth in this story that the male to female ratio runs around 1:5?

Yeah I think that there are more girls than boys - and they're all stunning! On a big night out they all get bladdered drunk and get sick on the streets which is really weird.
Shandon - Airwaves Festival was great. Reykjavik is small so you'll get to go everywhere - it's cool to see so many good gigs one after another. Drink is expensive so tank up on duty free beforehand. Make sure you go to the Blue Lagoon for the DJ set gig - good tunes, beer, sulphur smelly lagoon and lots of half naked good looking people!
Oh also Iceland smells of eggs and farts so brace yourself. They get all their hot water from the ground and it's kind of like showering in eggy water!

I found that out the hard way........Was having a shave, and you know, when you're done, you cup water in your hands and splash yourself.....done that, and I yacked right back into the sink.
The girls there are stunning.......and they speak english!!!

only back from the place...it's a great spot in fairness...got loads of pics...bloody expensive alright though (as much as i prepared myself)...that said, really enjoyed it, and i'd go back in a flash...there were fireworks going off all over the city the last couple of nights we were there and it wasn't even NYE...i was like, WTF? it was cool though...it'll probably be mental tonight
the blue lagoon is a mad buzz, we even had a russian submarine passing by...
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/2671/hpim0143av7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
it was fairly cold and rainy and it was some dash to the water like, it was either that or freeze...but man, once you're in the water in those conditions, you don't want to get out!

last night here was mental!!!!!!
I´ve never been a big fireworks fan but here it´s like every family in the entire city ignites fireworks over the course of about 2-3 hours either side of midnight and the sight was truly amazing
on to the bars afterwards and the last one we were in was still going strong at 7.45am when we left, just out of bed an hour ago, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
