For me, a toss up between Sri Lanka 1990, right after the government put down the socialist uprising (Did ya read Anil's Ghost?) and Kashmir the same year, when the war was just breaking out. In retrospect we were insane to be in either of those places, but it made sense at the time.

I was in Bosnia in 97 when the war had only just ended.

Although everyone told me I was nuts, the area I was going to had always been well inside Croat territory and had never been affected by the war. It's still cool to say I was in Bosnia in 97.

Nairobi is a pretty dangerous city. Talking to people who lived there I heard some horror stories alright, and arriving there at 4am on a nightbus into the city centre was pretty scary. Only other place I ever felt threatened was in Nakuru town also in Kenya, but still I wouldnt recommend Nairobi really...

Funnily enough, the most frightening place I've ever been was the subterranean Führerhauptquartiere as the Russians advanced in 1945 - also in Berlin! Well, that and the time I unwittingly stopped for a slash at that lay-by on the Lee Road and a man approached me, dropped his trousers and pointed at himself.

Spent 14 hours in a greyhound bus station in east LA after 20 hours flying. Only time I have ever been intimidated in any place I've been. Some mucho scary looking hombres kicking about the place. Spent the 14 hours holding on to my backpack trying to stay awake.

Dear god, Im speechless, your a lost case.
With this frame of mind, why dont you just watch a porno instead of having a girlfriend, some soaps instead of having friends, some cooking Dvd´s instead of eating.........jesus , some people are so dumb.
You dont see the difference between a DVD and travelling? go see a doctor amigo, and while your at it, go back to school to help your spelling..or even better, get a "blackboard jungle" dvd...hahaahaah

nah, that's fair enough. mine is almost full now - page and a half blank and about 18 months left on it. hoping to fill it with japan this xmas.

Looked into PNG for last xmas but the travel agent laughed at us. went to vanuatu instead - top notch.

jesus man, i spent a couple of days working in Baltimore a few years back - company director picks me up at the airport - your typical wasp - drives me to the premises. En route we pull up at traffic lights and these two "homies" in a souped up gangsta-mobile are besides us. Yer man winds down the window and asks "you guys ok?". they just look back with a look that screamed "are you fucking serious honky?" .... awkward silence persists til the lights go green. yer man thought the two boys were looking for directions.

of my two or three days in baltimore this is all i recall.... a near death experience in my opinion!

LMAO, it really isn't that bad if you stick to the good 6% of the city ;)

Nah it's fine to be honest if you know the score. The Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Federal Hill, Charles Village etc. are all pretty fine. The Harbor in particular is an awesome spot. Personally, I have no reason to go out into a lot of the neighborhoods so I only see them if I take a wrong turn. They are ridiculously rough spots though!! The Wire definitely isn't far from the truth if you head out into East Baltimore. -AmadeusDC-

Jo'burg was the most dangerous place I've been...very scary...Two friends of mine were mugged on the street,One was punched in the face and she was pregnant at the time....Two of the guys I was there with were walking along the street also when a car pulled up and shot the man walking in front of them..they were freaked out big time...I got back to my hotel after a gig one night, and my hotel room was completely ransacked...We had to have armed police drive us around and even our record bags were searched going into our own gigs for weapons...It's not a place you'd feel very safe in!!
Wouldn't be in a hurry to go back there....Cape town is much nicer...

South Boston, had a bit of a reputation but is getting better.

Been to Tijuana Mexico a good few times, just skipped south of the border for nights out when I was in San Diego. You really need to watch yourself there, we were told to keep 20 dollars in a sock in case the cops catch you taking a wizz on the street or something similar and demand a bribe or get arrested. Inside the clubs felt ok but I would not like to be left on my own down there. One of my cousins friends got robbed at gunpoint down there!:crazyeye:

Actually, the time the cunt cyclo driver in Ho Chi Minh City tried to charge me 20 times the going (and about 10 times the prior agreed) rate was pretty fucking scarey. I fucked the money at him and set off with me shopping. Never expected him to start legging after me, and never though I'd see an oul fella running that fast. Fucked the bags at shopping at him and he just kept coming, down allweyways, across the street, 'til I ducked into the jacks in coffee house, with visions of that scene from Romper Stomper flashing through my mind. Convinced he was going to knife if me if he saw me again.

crossing the border between peru and bolivia, border bridge blockaded so we had to get out and walk across under the beady eyes of the locals. Was a long walk, next day we found out on the news they were after lynching their mayor! Worked our way down to Argie then back up to Venezuela but had to spend our last 5 days in Caracas in the hotel because of all the anti v pro Chavez riots.
but worst of them all has to be making my way home merrily drunk in Moscow when i got stopped by a gang of locals all aching for a chance to kick the living shit out of a rich westerner. Lucked out in the fact that a cop car passed by and stopped anything before i was too seriously hurt.
Still its all great experiences to look back on now

defo an important lesson in vietnam! saw a couple of incidents like that. although once the tourist started running the guys pride was satisfied. didn't see it so much in the other south east asian countries though, the vietnamese defo seem to be the most aggressive.

Definitely, they get really abusive if you don't buy their shite or book a tour with them as well. One arsehole told me to fuck off cos I wouldn't book a tour out to some island with him in Nha Trang. And its the whole 'Oh where you from, Ireland? ah I had some one on my tour from there last week' shite that annoyed me as well. The other se asian people were much nicer. Took no for an answer.

yeah, had to sprint to taxi on two occasions at night with some yanks to get out alive. rio is dodgy too but if in group you are generally ok, loads of fellow backpackers in my hostel got done in rio but they were stupid, going around with cameras hangin off em etc. one of the lads got knife pulled on him on first night on cococabana beach and they blocked his air passage from bhind him around his neck until he passed out, he was robbed blind. another night in rio in lapa district, kids came down from favellas with guns and police came in and pepper sprayed entire street to disperse all the tourists. still a great spot to go on holiday, will be going back to brazil et all for few months in sept. you just have be vigilant and dress down to fit in with locals. Best party spot ive been to without a doubt.

You can, actually. I'm just trying to think where, not the big gaff on La Bourse (O'Reilly's?), not Celtica (although maybe?)... Kittie O'Shea's up by Berlaymont? If not, you've still got the maddest after-hours bar on the planet just up the road- Le Franklin. Crooked cops with pistols supping away, illegal immigrant barmaids, Romanian owner who's into racketeering, neighbourhood drunkards... spent many a happy night there.

With the best breweries in the world, why would you want stout in Belgium? You can get the wild yeast lambic brewed by trappist monks ffs! http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Brews-Culture-Craftsmanship-Tradition/dp/0937381861

Very true.

Love this bar in Brussels called Lop Lop. Well no, it's actually a shithole, but it's got in excess of 150 varieties of beer on sale- plus an oul'fella in the corner playing the piano. Whenever there's a fight, he speeds up his playing.

Just got off a bus into Nairobi which looks dodgy as fuck. Most dangerous thing I've done is probably the journey I just made through Northern Kenya. Shifta, or armed bandits, regularly hijack and rob trucks going through there.

Spent two days bouncing around on the back of a truck for 13 hours each day on an awful dirt track of a road, then a bus to here. Nothing happened, although we had a feen with a gun sitting on top with us as protection. We blew a tire last night after sunset as we were passing these dodgy looking guys - the bang was so loud I thought they shot at us, nearly fuckin fell off the truck with the fright so I did!

Hilarious in retrospect...

I was in Bosnia in 97 when the war had only just ended.

Although everyone told me I was nuts, the area I was going to had always been well inside Croat territory and had never been affected by the war. It's still cool to say I was in Bosnia in 97.

I was in Jerusalem myself when i was 7.
Which would have been 1991.
We traveled by ship from Cyprus, which was probably the nicest ship i was ever on, fond memories.

Ive lived a pretty safe life, i cant think of the most dangerous place i was in.

was in Israel two days and yitzik rabin (sic) got clipped. place was a bit tense for a bit after that . Didnt go near the west bank or gaza , why?
well what with riots , suicide bombers and trigger happy IDF all over the place didnt seem like a smart place to visit . Drank in the leprechaun bar in tel aviv which was suicide bombed by those two British Knobs .
Travelling on a bus there always made you think twice aswell . Never had much sympathy for the palestine cause after that . Sitting on the bus you see old people , mothers with their daughters and even arabs . So for anyone to denotate a bomb in those surroundings is a plain and simple cold cunt . And the fact that its celebrated like a world cup win in certain quarters ! well say no more . And for all you dying to tell what the Israelis get up to in gaza etc I know only too well and they also can be cold bastards

I spent two years working as a volunteer teacher in northern Nigeria. Went to Lagos just to see if it was as bad as I'd heard.

It was worse than I could ever have imagined. Some dude tried to carjack the taxi I was in, but thankfully the driver beat him off with a big stick he had in the cab.

i was there for a few hours, i saw a crack-whores pussy, she was sitting down on the side of the road, wit her legs open and no panties on...i presume she had sold them for drugs

either side of her all down the road were people on their hand and knees, i couldnt believe my eyes

Stayed in a crumbling hostel in the Bronx once; actually, centre Harlem.
As if that wasn't bad enough [we were the only white girls in the entire place!] we decided to walk back to our hostel [two of us] at midnight, after seeing Tommy Tiernan further into the city. It was a terrifying walk, ending with us legging it to the hostel, for our own safety.

*shudder* can still see all the black guys that surrounded us at one point, whispering about 'pretty little white girls' and closing in. actually terrifying.

NUTS!!!!...

how badly were you injured by the mine??? - if you don't mind me asking...

Nearly lost my leg below the knee, instead rebuilt my knee using plastic knee cap and ligaments from my hips. Lost the ends of a few fingers and now have no feeling in them. A piece of srapnel smashed into my mouth and broke all my front teeth and blew out a small piece of my upper jaw just below my nose.

Spent the next 3 years in rehab learning to walk as a live in patient and getting my face re-constructed.

All well and good now, new career, new wife.....Happy days!
