Beautiful city. Beautiful area.

Godawful nightlife.

As sais just before, if you're travelling independently, most accommodation is B&B. The standard signs will say something along the lines of Sobe/Zimmer/Rooms/Chambres/Camere. The owners usually omit the languages they don't speak. I'd hazard that 80% can speak English (less in the inland areas) and those who can't, can usually speak German. When I was there the B&B owners prefered to be paid in Deutsch Marks. The same may apply for Euro nowadays.

There are a number of large hotels aimed at package tourists, but these are a fair way from the old town.

Make the effort to got to Cavtat. It's a small town about an hour or so away. It's only about an hour away. It's very peacful and quiet and the scenery is amazing.
If your an active person then I'd highly recommend taking in on of the many canoeing 'safaris' . Ours was over the border in Bosnia and was fantastic. Great scenery again,. These can be booked in any hotel I'd say.

I'd agree with Jungle about the nightlife . It's pretty awful. The nightclubs are stuck in the 80's. Although apparently there's an Italian run club there ( the name escapes me) that was supposed to be pretty good. Didn't get there so can't comment. Some decent bars with live Jazz music if that's your thing.

Just pop in to the local tourist office and they'll sort you out with a cheap B&B but it's true about the nightlife- it's terrible at best.

I would recommend getting an apartment in Dubrovnik - there are loads of them and they are clean and reasonable. Here is a good website for finding one. http://www.travel-library.com/apartments/europe/croatia/dubrovnik/
Hire a car and go to Montenegro - Kotor and Budva are both worthing visiting and it is dirt cheap. Don't know what it would be like at this time of year though I went at the start of the summer and the weather was lovely and it wasn't too crowded. It gets horrifically busy at peak season in Dubrovnik loads of loud Americans spilling off cruisers for the day trips.

Get the bus to Bosnia for a few days, even cheaper than Croatia and it's lovely.

2 hours from Dubrovnik I presume you mean?

We hired a car from Hertz and drove down there for the day taking in Kotor on the way. Booze and food is disgracefully cheap down there as well - unlike Dubrovnik.

The only thing about Bosnia is that there's no coast for beach balming.
