View Full Version : United To Sign Torres For £26 Million Next Summer

Manchester United will sign Fernando Torres for £26m next summer after agreeing to make a down-payment for his services, according to the Evening Echo.
The Red Devils have long been linked with the highly-rated Atletico Madrid frontman and speculation of a move to Old Trafford intensified in the summer after Ruud van Nistelrooy left to join Atletico’s rivals Real.
The 22-year-old Torres, who has also been heavily linked with Chelsea, moved to head off the reports by signing a one-year contract extension with Atletico.
But it is now claimed Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to make a down-payment of £5m in a bid to beat Chelsea to the signing of Torres, who netted four goals at the World Cup.
The striker, nicknamed ‘El Nino’, had a buy-out clause worth £41m in his contract however Atletico have reportedly dropped the price because of United’s ‘show of faith’ and his apparent desire to move to Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Glenn Roeder has denied reports he has fallen out with Sir Alex Ferguson over Newcastle’s treatment of loan star Giuseppe Rossi at St James’.
Italy Under-21 striker Rossi has not started a game for the Magpies since his loan move from Manchester United and there have been rumours circulating in the north-west that Ferguson is annoyed at the youngster’s lack of action.
“Giuseppe Rossi has made a big impression,” Roeder said.

Spanish Journo Guilleme Ballague who co-presents the Spanish Football review on Sky Sports stated last night that Torres will go to United next summer. He said he could have gone to Milan, Inter, Real or Spurs strangely enough this summer as they all matched Atletico's £35M asking price. Torres however, met with Man U on two seperate occasions and wants to join them but United would not match the asking price. Torres has since signed a one year contract extension with a new release clause of €35M (£26M) which is what United are willing to pay.
Ballague stated that 100% Torres wants to go to United.
United could still do with some midfield cover coming in January and possiblly even another Striker, someone could then be off-loaded when/if Torres arrives in the summer...
Fergie really is trying to put in place a seriously strong and young United squad to leave when he retires, he's building for the future after he's gone by the looks of it...

I saw that a well last nite and im more hopefull now that he will come next season. He wasnt very convincing about wanting to stay as all he mentioned was success and getting into Europe. He was brilliant against Real at the weekend as well, put some incredible through ball in the box for his team mates.

his release clause is set so United only have to offer that and the player can go there regardless of what any other club offers. Then its up to the wages that the clubs offer. We know United will cap it at probably £80k to keep rio happy but Chelsea could offer him £150k if they want. It does appear though that torres does want to go to United..
here's hoping, I still don't rate Saha. He reminds me too much of Andy Cole. Will get alot of goals because of the chnaces that will be created by his team mates but just not good enough at the top level..

Atletico Madrid have once again told Manchester United that Fernando Torres is not for sale.
The 22 year-old Spaniard admitted that the Old Trafford club showed an interest in him during the summer, leading to fresh speculation that Sir Alex Ferguson had made a £5million down-payment to sign the player at the end of the season.
However, these reports have angered Atletico sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch who told Sky Sports: ""We are tired of this question.
"Atletico is a club that doesn't speak about rumours, but I insist that we have not received any proposition from United or any other club in recent times for Torres.
"For us this subject is closed. El Nino is our player and has just signed a contract with Atletico for a long time and it is our intention not to sell him."

They can give him 80 K a week wages and then pay him another 70K or something for image rights rental, or expenses or language classes, the wage structure won't be a problem. I still don't think it will happen however. Saha is a fine player in my opinion, and adds more to the team then RVN did.
Still I would have preferred if they had kept RVN, but he didn't like the rotation system.

fair play to Saha at the moment, he's combining two different injuries into the one layoff, ..and during an international break as well.

yeah laughed when fergie gave his post match interview at the weekend, domenech doesnt fancy fighting with fergie as much as he does with jose as hes called up anelka as cover.
think torres would be a revelation at OT,has good movement and workrate like saha but hes a better finisher, still rate saha as well though.

Unconfirmed reports at the time he signed his extension indicated that the buy-out clause had been dropped from 90m Euro to 40m. Wonder which is closer to the mark?
Nike will obviously be keen to link up all 3 of their rising stars - Ronaldo, Rooney & Torres - at the same club. I can see them having had a major influence on this transfer if it goes through.
Rooney & Torres up front for United scares the shit out of me to be perfectly honest. Lets just hope that Xabi, Luis & Pepe have a few words in his ear over the international break and convince him that his future lies in Milan!!! :-)

Personally I don't think that finishing is a particular strength of Saha or Torres but the spaniard has a great all-round game and would make some of the mugs in the premiership look like absolute apes. Andy O'Brien & Linvoy Primus et al must be absolutely crapping themselves.

yeah, he'd be class.
..but as said by others, I'd be sceptical of any transfer news until a deal was signed, ...and as someone mentioned goalscoring isn't the problem area.
..and United were the only club out of the 20 Premier League clubs not to have a net outlay on player acquisitions in the summer. So much for the £25m a year budget.

Ha ha:)
It was suprisingly enough, Spurs, who did recoup 13 million back (so far) off Carrick
Most of the big clubs who spent also sold a few (Ruud, Eidur etc etc)
debts to be paid lad
it does add even more to Fergusons stock.
(re. mockery!)
...that he's leading the poorest club football has ever seen (£800m debts and no money for players) ..and he's taking on the the richest club football has ever seen (£8,000m bankroll).
and here he is top of the Premier League!!!
and top of his Champions League group!!!

Funny how things turn out...came across this one when looking for a Shevchenko thread. If Torres had gone to United and knocked them in like he did for Liverpool last year they'd have broken all kinds of records!

Or they might have relied on him too much and might have been too predictable
United's attack last year was tough to make plans against
Tevez scored big goals against Chelsea, Liverpool, Lyon, Spurs and Blackburn when it really mattered, and United won their two priority trophies
Torres is quality and we will all admit how good he is but it is not necessarily a given that he would do as well for United
and he defo wouldn't have got more goals than Ronaldo
Top player though
