Spurs begin their UEFA Cup group stage programme with a trip to Istanbul to take on Besiktas on October 19.

They have also been drawn alongside Bayer Leverkusen, Club Brugge and Dinamo Bucharest in Group B of the competition.

After Besiktas they face Club Brugge at the Lane on November 2 before travelling to Bayer Leverkusen on November 23. Spurs complete the group with a home tie against Dinamo Bucuresti on December 14.

Thursday 19 October - Besiktas (Turkey) (A)
Thursday 2 November - Club Brugge (Belgium) (H)
Thursday 23 November - Bayer 04 Leverkusen (Germany) (A)
Thursday 14 December - Dinamo Bucuresti (Romania) (H)

There were eight groups of five clubs drawn and the top three will progress to the round of 32 after the teams have played each other once. The successful teams will be joined in the knock out stages by the eight third place teams from the Champions League.

Any predictions for tomorrow night?? it's gonna be a tough test for a side that's yet to really fire this season.

Here's what ex-spurs player and former Blue peter garden vandal Les Ferdinand had to say about the turkish side who he spent a loan spell with.

* he fails to mention how on his debut they sacrificed a lamb and painted it's blood on his boots

"Besiktas was great for me," he reflected this week. "It was my first loan to another professional club and first real taste of senior football. Gordon Milne took me over there and as the only English player, they really looked after me.

"It was a step into the unknown for me - my only knowledge of Turkey was from the film Midnight Express!
"I hadn't really played in front of any crowds either - apart from the FA Vase Final at Wembley - as I'd come up through non-league and I'd been playing reserve football at QPR.

"All of a sudden I'm at Besiktas and there were 30,000 in the stadium for my first training session! There was so much interest in English football then. I just remember thinking to myself 'do these people know I've only been playing in the reserves?' but it was something to behold.

"I wouldn't go as far as saying it was make or break for me out there but it was because I did so well out there that I was able to come back to England and push on. It was an experience I wouldn't change for anything and one that was very important in the context of my career as a whole."

"I can tell everyone at Spurs that they will be stepping into an incredible atmosphere," he said. "There wasn't as much European football when I was there but when any English teams came over to Istanbul it was massive for the team involved and all the supporters from the other teams would go along as well. It was like a World Cup game.

"It's an unbelievable atmosphere and one every professional footballer should relish. It will certainly be a great experience for the younger lads at Spurs and this is what getting into Europe is all about - you want these tests."

Just re-read the first post and saw that the top 3 from each group go through. Would think they'd definitely finish in the top 3 but won't top this group imho. Getting Ledley King fully fit & in form is key to their progression in this competition.

Seriously though, I'm not sure how well Spurs will do. I'm not totally convinced they'll finish top 3. The two seemingly more difficult games are away. I would have preferred it the other way around.

Steed Malbranque is well qualified to assess the challenge likely to be faced by Spurs in Istanbul tonight.
Their opening UEFA Cup group stage opponents are managed by his countryman and former boss at Fulham, Jean Tigana.
Besiktas have enjoyed a decent start to their domestic Super League season, sitting third in the standings with five wins from 9 games (one draw) and Steed believes the footballing philosophy of the French international great should ensure an encounter which is pleasing on the eye.
"Jean Tigana likes his teams to play good football and nearly always on the ground - he doesn't like his teams playing the ball in the air," said the player who arrived in England from Lyon in 2001.
"He wants a lot of movement from his players, pass and move is his style of coaching. The goalkeeper rarely kicks long as Jean likes his keepers to roll the ball to the defenders and for the team to build up from the back.
"He was a top player and is a great manager as well - a very intelligent man who loves good football. Of course I would like to be playing in this game and it is a disappointment not to be, but hopefully I will get to play in the next European game."

Martin Jol: "Hopefully Ledley will be fine, he had a problem with his knee, but he is a tough lad and this is an important one for us. We are playing on Sunday too so we have to make choices and it is the same with Hossam .

He will be a late decision, but he has tried hard because they all want to come with us to Istanbul. Teemu is still out, while Jermain had a little problem with his foot on Tuesday but is here with us. Mido has a thigh problem and did not make the trip.

Everybody else looks fine in midfield and I will have to make a decision on Michael Dawson, whether to spare him until Sunday. Calum broke his nose but he is a strong boy.

I have got a few choices to make and hopefully I will make the right ones."

Huddlestone is a different type of player really. Hes more a physical presence who covers a lot of ground and does the simple things right. Wouldnt have MC's vision or creativity imho. But hes an excellent player from what Ive seen and apparently can slot in centre back also if needed. Dont know if Huddlestone and Zokora could play together but would like to see them get a chance together as it would really allow Lennon and Malbranque get forward on either side of them.

TURKISH DELIGHT

Martin Jol was a happy man after Spurs opened up the group stage of the UEFA Cup with a convincing victory over Besiktas in Istanbul on Thursday night.

The dominant force from start to finish, a goal in each half from Hossam Ghaly and Dimitar Berbatov secured a deserved win

"We are very satisfied with the three points," declared Martin. "It was a great experience for us with such a fanatical crowd. We said beforehand that we had to enjoy it, that was the main thing, to get a result and fight for every yard.

"We started off well, controlled the first half - that is always important - but we couldn't score more than one goal and that is always difficult against someone like Besiktas.

"Dimitar Berbatov then showed his extra quality, we scored the second goal at the right moment and then had three or four chances after that.

"Don't forget that we had to re-organise in midfield because we lost Didier Zokora late with a fever, but Tom Huddlestone came in and had a very good game together with Jermaine Jenas.

"I thought Hossam Ghaly was excellent in the first half, the defence was excellent and we were too strong to concede goals. I was happy with the team performance.

"If you go into Europe you would always say that a draw is a satisfactory result, Turkey is a strong league, the crowd was second to none - taking all that into account, we kept our heads cool and motivated to have a very good result."

Thought Huddlestone really came of age last night. Martin Jol has always been speaking very highly of him ever since he arrived from Derby. That was Berbatov's real 'debut' for Spurs. he was on a different level last night. super pass for Gahly's goal, and he took his own with sublime aplomb!!

couldn't get over the turkish fans, Two nil down only minutes remaining and the whole stand is doing a pogo!!! Psychos!!! what would they have been like if they actually won?

Shows how much I know. I watched this in patches but it fair to say that Spurs looked fairly comfortable once they get their noses in front and can feel very pleased with themselves to go to such an intimidating venue & come away with all 3 points and an impressive performance.

Top class finish from Berbatov, very cool under pressure.

Jenas is out (boo hoo, what a pity!). Hopefully Lennon and Chimbonda will be available but they have to pass fitness tests. A win would see Spurs through while a draw would make it all but an absolute certainty. Should be decent enough to watch if you have Setanta.

Yep things are looking good so far. It'll be interesting to see what teams come into the last 16 from the champs league. But if we finish first in our group we are going to avoid them anyway. Strange the way we look so assured away from home in the UEFA compared to whats happening in the premiership. It looks as if Feyenoord's appeal has failed. The following announcement was on the Spurs web site

"The Club understands that Feyenoord have filed an Appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the decision by the UEFA Appeals Body to exclude them from the UEFA Cup 2006/07.
CAS has indicated that a decision will be reached by Friday 9th February at the latest. We shall of course inform you of the outcome as soon as we have it.

Again we would advise fans not to make any travel arrangements to Holland for the game until the matter is finally resolved"

One wonders why the CAS would wait that long to make it offical, it can't be helpful for either party. interesting point form AFeenCalledDan about clearing out cobwebs, but hopfully after tomorrow night they'll be a cup final against Chelski. Thursday, 22 February 2007
Five former UEFA Cup winners will be battling to join two-time holders Tottenham Hotspur FC in the last 16 when the Round of 32 concludes.
Potential clash
Handed a bye following the expulsion of 1973/74 and 2001/02 UEFA Cup winners Feyenoord, Martin Jol's side will meet the winners of Parma FC's tie with SC Braga. Should Claudio Ranieri's men overturn the 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Portugal, it would set up a meeting between the only two remaining two-time UEFA Cup winners in the competition.
Two-time winners
Parma may be having hard times in Serie A, but they can draw plenty of inspiration from their recent history, having won the UEFA Cup in 1994/95 and 1998/99 and reached the semi-finals two seasons ago. Tottenham, meanwhile, won the inaugural UEFA Cup competition in 1971/72 and brought the trophy back to north London again in 1983/84.
Ajax in peril
The most likeliest of the former winners remaining to miss out on the last 16 are AFC Ajax, although the Dutch club are a force to be reckoned with at the Amsterdam ArenA. The 1991/92 UEFA Cup winners are 3-0 down from the first leg of their tie against Werder Bremen, with the German side showing the form that saw them narrowly miss out on a place in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
Holders hopeful
Holders Sevilla FC will hope they can maintain their 2-0 first-leg advantage as FC Steaua Bucuresti return to the scene of their 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup triumph - Seville's Rámon Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. Meanwhile, 2004/05 winners PFC CSKA Moskva face a tricky trip to Maccabi Haifa FC after drawing 0-0 in the home leg of their tie, played 1,500km from chilly Moscow in Vladikavkaz.
English ties
The only other former winners, 1987/88 champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen, will take a 3-2 lead into the away leg of their tie against Blackburn Rovers FC. Elsewhere in England, Newcastle United FC will be presented with the UEFA Intertoto Cup trophy as the longest surviving team from the traditional summer competition, as they welcome SV Zulte Waregem, holding a 3-1 lead.

Here's what Martin Jol had to say about Thursday's game

Our next assignment is Braga away in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup on Thursday. I went to see them personally last week and I can tell you that they use a lot of players in order to rest people for forthcoming big games.

Overall we have got a very good impression of them and if you let them express themselves on the ball they are very strong with their Brazilian influence. Braga are well organised at the back so it will be a difficult match away from home.

Hopefully we can get a good result on our travels and, in front of our crowd at the Lane, finish them off.

Braga's ground, Estádio Municipal de Braga, is very different and I have been there a couple of times. As many of you will remember from Euro 2004 there are no stands behind the goals and it is set in a valley. You go down in a lift to get to the stands and it is very strange, there are two big stands and I expect there will be quite a few people there.

I saw them when there were 6,000 in the stadium and that was a good atmosphere, so you can imagine what it will be like against us with our travelling support.

The game is been shown live on Setanta Sports , kick off is at 21.35!!!

The draw for the rest of the competition will be made at 12pm. I actually wouldn't mind getting Sevilla. Their priority has got to be La Liga. Shakhtar blew it big time against them. I'd rather avoid Osasuna, Espanyol, Benfica, Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen. AZ would be a decent draw.

I'm fairly sure Berbatov will miss the first leg of the quarter cos he got booked in both legs against Braga. That'll be a huge blow.

god they got a pasting. 2-0 is an injustice to Az, who must be some sort of dutch Arsenal equivalent. They played great flowing football and were able to find holes in every area of newcastles defence. Duff was woeful again. Van Gaal seems to be putting a good side together there

I suppose 2-1 isn't too bad on paper but I'd have much preferred a draw or a higher scoring 1 goal defeat. I fear a bit for Spurs' dodgy defence in the second leg. Clean sheets are hard to come by these days. The semi spot is achievable but it'll be very close. The second half wasn't great and I'm actually surprised that Sevilla didn't try too hard for anther goal. Hopefully they'll be punished for it next week.

Espanyol must be sick. They were 3 up at home to Benfica after an hour but let it slip to 3-2. Benfica should be in the driving seat there. AZ drew 0-0 at home to Bremen. Should make for an interesting second leg which could still go either way. Osasuna are already through after winning so easily in Leverkusen.

Taarabt claims Tottenham deal

By Laurent Picard - Created on 10 Apr 2007

Adel Taarabt claims he has signed a contract at Tottenham that will keep him at White Hart Lane for the next five years.

The French youngster joined the North London club on loan from Lens during the January transfer window, with a view to a permanent move.
Taarabt is enjoying his new surroundings and says he has already committed to Martin Jol's side for the long-term.

However, the permanent deal can only become official when the midfielder turns 18 at the end of May.

Taarabt, who played the final 25 minutes of Spurs' defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, is delighted with his decision to move to the Premiership.
"I am not on loan, I have signed for five years but the contract will be official when I am 18 years of age," he told RMC.

"It is a nice story for me. I belong to Spurs. I feel very good, this club trusts youngsters and there are French players Pascal Chimbonda and Steed Malbranque, and Didier Zokora and Teemu Tainio speak French.
"I was watched by Tottenham scouts when I played with the France Under 17 team.

"I asked Lens to play, but they told me I was too young. Spurs representatives told me I would regularly play with them, so I immediately agreed to move. They love French people there.

"In England you have to attack for the fans. Even if you lead 3-1 at home, you add more strikers, whereas in France you replace strikers with defenders."

Meanwhile, Taarabt has stated his desire to represent France in international football, despite also being eligible to play for Morocco.
"I am French, my family is from Morocco but I would prefer to play for France," he added.

If it's true then this is good news. The guy has had a couple of cameos as a substitute and looked really impressive.

Goalkeeper Andrés Palop and striker Ernesto Chevantón will miss the second leg of Sevilla FC's UEFA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur FC.
Medical staff have confirmed Palop is suffering from a calf injury while Chevantón, the team's top scorer in the UEFA Cup this season with four goals, has strained a muscle in his right leg, having started last week's first leg, which the UEFA Cup holders won 2-1 in Spain, on the bench. David Cobeńo is expected to take Palop's place for the game at White Hart Lane.

"We got off to a great start and played some good football," Robbie reflected. "Sometimes things are just out of your control and the penalty knocked us out of our stride a little bit.

"With the second goal we lost concentration but, all in all, while of course you want to go away and win all the time, the important thing was getting the away goal and we managed to do that.

"We have got every confidence in ourselves over winning the return tonight," he went on to predict, before reflecting on the ease with which the team were able to move the ball around, in the early stages in particular.

"They will let you play but we are a good side and we like to play good football. We know that if a team gives us space and time we can punish them.

"We did that for periods but here at White Hart Lane we will be looking to do that for the majority of the game."

"We have to be confident. They are a good side, Sevilla, no question about it and their domestic form suggests that. But we have got no fear of anyone.

"Playing at White Hart Lane, I'm sure the atmosphere will be great. When the supporters get behind the team it really does help the players and our fans will do this for us tonight. "

It's all over and Sevilla have advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup having completed a 4-3 aggregate triumph over Tottenham following a thrilling night at White Hart Lane.Hardly. Spurs saved some face in the end but they were asleep for the first 8 minutes and then felt sorry for themselves until 20 minutes into the second half.

In hindsight, the most vital period of the whole tie was the 17 minutes between Robbie Keane's goal and that penalty. It's easy to put it down to the ridiculous mistake that the ref made but Spurs just totally retreated in that period when they should have been consolidating the strong position they found themselves in. There was every chance that Sevilla could have been 2-1 up by half time anyway even without the help of the ref.

Huddlestone was a big loss over the 180 minutes and the full back situation tonight contributed to the drowsiness at the start. Dawson's inexperience was exposed. He played poorly throughout and he set the tone for the evening by duffing a straightforward header at the start of the game that sparked the early pressure from Sevilla.

On the plus side, it's great to see King back. Hopefully he can stay fit and Spurs can maintain the good league form. I assume that if Chelsea and United qualify for the FA cup final then the 7th placed Premiership team will qualify for the UEFA cup.

78' - GOAL SPURS! Bale with a driving run down the left and he cuits a cross back which Defoe steps over for Keane to drive into the roof of the net. Inspired substitution as the two replacements combine to make it 1-1.

Martin Jol reflected: "You always want to win games and it wasn't easy to be 6-1 up from the first leg and come here, one day's preparations and it was a strange feeling, like a pre-season game in that it was so warm.
"We played several different players and I felt we could take that gamble.
"We lacked a bit of rhythm in the second half and the only thing disappointing thing was I couldn't take off the likes of Huddlestone and Zokora because we wanted to get something out of the game.
"Gareth Bale is very good going forward and Robbie Keane is a great finisher and we needed them both.
"I wanted to win and that's why I put Adel Taarabt on, he can change things. We had the chances and if you don't take them, you have to settle for a draw. At the end of the day we've won 7-2 on aggregate and we're into the group stages."
Martin could afford a smile as he talked about Famagusta's goal - Frousos blatantly handled in the box before Pereira's fine finish.
"We wanted to keep a clean sheet but if you saw their goal, I'd still consider this game a clean sheet!" he laughed. "They had two goalkeepers on the pitch!"

Tottenham Hotspur FC coach Martin Jol and his RSC Anderlecht counterpart Frank Vercauteren declared themselves satisfied after the 1984 UEFA Cup finalists were pitted together in Group G of the competition at Tuesday's draw.
Happy anniversary
Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC, Aalborg BK and Getafe CF, who are competing in Europe for the first time, complete the Group G lineup but it is the meeting of Tottenham and Anderlecht that stands out in the section. The fixture will bring back happy memories for the north London side who are celebrating their 125th anniversary this season.
Parks heroics
The dreaded lottery of penalties decided the outcome in 1984 with Tottenham prevailing to win the competition for the second time. Tony Parks' save from Arnor Gudjohnsen secured victory after the tie had finished 2-2 on aggregate. The Brussels team had looked set to retain the trophy when Alex Czerniatynski scored an hour into the second leg at White Hart Lane. But a late Graham Roberts equaliser in a 1-1 draw, added to the goalkeeping heroics of Parks, ensured otherwise.
'Satisfied'
The two clubs will meet again in the Belgian capital on 6 December, with Jol confident of taking his side through to the knockout stage. "I'm pretty satisfied," Jol said. "You can only assess the group on paper and my feeling is that it could have been a lot tougher for us. Anderlecht away will be a hard one, but it is the final game for us and hopefully we will have done the business by then. They have got fanatical supporters, just like we've got, so that should be a special night with the history between the clubs in this competition."

High hopes
Tottenham were knocked out by Sevilla FC in last term's quarter-finals and, despite a poor start in the Premier League, they will expect to match that at least this time round. Anderlecht coach Vercauteren also believes his charges have a good chance of prolonging their European campaign into the new year. "It's a good draw for Anderlecht," he said. "We avoided a number of top teams, on paper at least. But in this draw there is the danger of drawing conclusions too soon. People might say, 'Oh, that's going to be easy', but I don't believe that.
'Dangerous draw'
"So it is also a dangerous draw, because expectations will probably be high. Some of our opponents we know, some of them we have to discover, but they will all have their own qualities." Group G kicks off on 25 October when Anderlecht host Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Tottenham entertain Getafe, before AaB begin their bid for glory on 8 November at home to the Belgian giants.

Chairman Daniel Levy revealed the club would continue to prioritise investment in team personnel plus stadium and training facilities

Shame he doesn't leave this to the manager.
Saw a quote from Jurgen Klinsmann recently when he said he couldn't work under the current conditions at Spurs. he said he'd have to have a say in transfer dealings. It's been well reported that Jol wanted a defensive midfielder and a left winger, and instead had Darren Bent and Kaboul 'forced' upon him

The Spurs front three are playing like Arsenal at the moment, but not in a good way! They are trying to pass their way through the Hapoel defence and always end up playing one pass too many when there is a perfectly good shooting opportunity.

Problem with the UEFA cup though is where it falls on the list of a club's priorities. Rosenborg look worthy of a very speculative and very small punt, IMO if even to lay out later on. I'd say Benfica will take it seriously given the deficit between themselves and Porto in the domestic league.

Robinson made Ramos angry
Eurosport - Mon, 11 Feb 14:09:00 2008
Tottenham Hotspur youngster Lukas Pekhart has revealed conflict between coach Juande Ramos and goalkeeper Paul Robinson, and detailed the changes that have turned the club's fortunes around.
The young Czech striker credited extra training and an improved diet for increasing the players' fitness levels, but also claimed that Ramos rarely speaks English.
He also said that Robinson refused to warm up with the team on being dropped for Pakhart's countryman Radek Cerny, provoking a rift between him and Ramos.

Tottenham have improved a lot under Juande Ramos. Why?
When he came, he told us in the dressing room that we were fat and that was the reason we were losing games in the last few minutes. He also wanted us to improve our fitness; that is why he changed the training. We started doing two training sessions a day and sometimes even extra jogging at the end. And, after every session we were weighed. Our eating habits have changed. It was not that strict under Mr [Martin] Jol. It was not that you could eat anything, but there were meals that were not exactly suited for sportsmen. Nowadays you can order vegetables, pasta, fish and chicken - and that is all. We drink water with lemon. Ramos is very strict and particular about discipline.
Has anyone complained about the changes?
No-one has dared to and, moreover, the coach only speaks Spanish. It is Gus Poyet who communicates in English. Nevertheless, Mr Ramos has tried to explain something in English a few times.
Did you have problems with your weight?
No, I was within the limit. I did not have much trouble with the changes as my agent Mr Paska warned me it would same as at Liverpool when Rafael Benitez came there. Spaniards are very strict about this.
Juande Ramos won two UEFA Cup trophies with Sevilla, does it give extra confidence to the Spurs players? That is why they appointed him, he is experienced at winning trophies. And Tottenham want to be winning them. In the Carling Cup we are one step away from winning the first one and in the UEFA Cup we are on the right track.
What do you think of the fact that Radek Cerny has become first-choice goalkeeper for Juande Ramos over the last weeks? We speak with each other every day. Radek is happy, he is enjoying every game and I feel happy for him. He did not get many chances before, but I know that the guys have been saying in training that he was making some unbelievable saves at times. I wish him well.
Paul Robinson, when sitting on the bench and watching the game, gives the impression of being a very angry man. It is like he does not care about the result. Is it just a fantasy or is it true?
Most recently it has been true. When the coach put him on the bench for the first time, against Arsenal, he did not even go to the warm-up which made the coach even more angry.

Reality biting for Spurs again. There'll be no 3 in a row for Juande, I fear. The centre of midfield just isn't crafty enough. The gamble on Gilberto has been a disaster too. Both full backs booked, not good.

The gap between the top teams in the Premiership and the rest summed up in 3 nights of soccer. It was all very well for Spurs in the Carling cup games against Arsenal and Chelsea where they hounded the opposition into submission but PSV just sat off them tonight and they had no answer. Not over yet but a huge task.

it's a huge task alright. positive talk from Ramos today. Gilberto made a shocking mistake for the goal. one nil isn't the end of the world.

fair point about the gulf between the top 3 and the rest. Arsenal go to Milan and WIN, Spurs lose at home to PSV

PSV are used to winning games plus they are still a champions league quality side though not as good as a couple of years ago. They got an unexpected rest today when they should have been playing Ajax because of a police strike in Holland.

I really hope Huddlestone plays from the start on wednesday. In hindsight I think it may have been a mistake not to play him the other night.

Giovani Dos Santos has claimed that he will be playing for Tottenham next season and cited the fact that Juande Ramos being the coach as the main reason.

The 19-year-old told reporters after a friendly between Argentina and Mexico that he had agreed to move to White Hart Lane and had turned down Manchester City.

I really don't understand why Barca are selling him. Especially after giving him quite a lot of football last year, in which he done very wll for a 16/17 year old. Incredible signing.. Spurs have got two exceptional young players so far this summer. Now for a couple of wily battlehardened midfielder and centreback and we will be going places. Who knows whats gonna happen with Berba but they certainly do not seem to be lining up for him. I'm not sure if that is down to the price or his attitude. Wouldn't be surprised to see him go in the opposite direction to giovanni though?

From THFC.com http://www.tottenhamhotspur .com/uploads/assets/240x359/players/giovani_dos_santos/giovani_dos_santos_2 40.jpg

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of Giovani dos Santos to the Club, subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms.

The 19-year-old Mexico international made 28 senior appearances for the Catalan club last season, scoring three goals, after displaying his credentials in the B team, where he made 27 appearances and netted five times.

It was his performances playing for his country at the FIFA World Under-17 Championships in 2005 that caught the attention of the Nou Camp side. Mexico emerged as winners in Peru and Giovani was named second best player in the tournament, while he was ranked in the top three players of the FIFA World Under-20 Championship staged in Canada in 2007.

He has since been capped on five occasions by the full Mexico national team.

In other news AC Milan have expressed interest in Berbatov

Giovani dos Santos has expressed his delight at joining the Club in his first interview since arriving at The Lane.

The 19-year-old Mexican international this week passed a medical and agreed terms to complete his move from Barcelona.

The versatile forward, who has five caps for his country and starred at the 2005 Under-17 World Championships and last year's Under-20 World Cup, is now full of excitement at the start of a new chapter in his career.

Giovani said: "It is a dream for me to come to a big club like Spurs. I've come here to further explore my qualities and give my all for my new team. As a young player I have come to a club where I feel there are many opportunities for me.

"I have been made to feel very welcome since arriving at Spurs and everyone has been very friendly. This is clearly a big club with a lot of ambition, and I can see it growing in the future.

"It is great to see Spurs fans wearing the shirt on the streets of London. I came here because of the passion of the fans as well as the size of the club, and I'm very much looking forward to playing in England."

Head Coach Juande Ramos, is looking forward to working with a player he is a long-term admirer of.

He said: "If Giovani progresses as we hope he will be a terrific player. This is a young player with a lot of potential, whom I have watched for some time and I am delighted he has joined the squad.

"For us it is an exciting signing because he has excellent quality, he operates well in different positions and, above all, is technically excellent."

Sporting Director Damien Comolli added: "Giovani possesses a great combination of physical power and explosivity, along with fine technical skills. He is someone who can create and score goals.

"He is young but not without experience and will be a great asset for the Club. The fact we have a Spanish speaking coaching staff, as well as Gilberto, will help him adapt, settle quickly and I believe he has the skills to be successful in England."

'tis just a pity Malbranque isn't available to play at the moment.

Funny enough that's what Roy "the party is over" Keane is saying at the moment

Roy Keane is counting the cost of Sunderland's Carling Cup win last night with Steed Malbranque struggling to be fit for Sunday's game against Manchester City.

There were a few sore legs at the training ground this morning after the Black Cats' extra-time win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Malbranque twisted his ankle and hurt his calf in the game and was replaced in the 19th minute. The Frenchman is almost certain to miss the City game.

the most interesting fact I could find about Wisla Kraków was that former Chelski player Dan Petrescu was sacked as their manager after barely nine months in charge back in 2006.

as the article below points out, defeat on Thursday could signal the end for Ramos

Spurs boss Juande Ramos brushed off fans' criticism after his side continued their winless start to the Barclays Premier League season.

More StoriesReport: Pompey down sorry Spurs
Redknapp: We don't need to sell
Tottenham remain rock bottom of the league after a 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth on Sunday, during which their fans chanted 'You don't know what you're doing' at Ramos when he replaced lone striker Roman Pavlyuchenko with Darren Bent after 73 minutes.

With just two points accrued from six games, it is clear the fans are losing patience with the Spaniard.

But Ramos said he was not hurt by the comments and insisted he does not think his job is under threat.

He said: "I speak with the chairman regularly and everybody is aware of our delicate position but we have to work hard together to change it.

"There is another game on Thursday in a different competition and the players know they must recover quickly.

"Does it hurt when the fans say those things? No, it hurts only when we cannot win games."

Defeat in the UEFA Cup against Wisla Krakow, when Spurs defend a narrow 2-1 first-leg lead in Poland, could put Ramos under unbearable pressure.
