Hello

How willing are employers in Ireland to do the whole Work Permit thing for a foreigner, say in a bar or restaurant? The foreigner in question is myself, a yank.

Very unlikely cause (a) its a real hassle and (b) plenty of cheap EU labour. Also, from memory, you may need to be in an occupation where there's an official skills shortage, plus possibly have a college degree from a specified college.

The employer has to pay for the work permit, so they really have to be sure you're worth it before they'll decide to sponsor you over someone who isn't going to cost them money before they even let you break their fancy equipment. They also have to prove that they had lookedfor an Irish citizen to fill the position but had no interest in it. If you do have an occupation in which there's a skills shortage (nurse, IT weasel or some such thing) you can bypass the whole work permit thing as long as you can find a job, which would be easy........because there's a skills shortage.
