Watching the Chelsea v Celtic game set me thinking why the fuck can't english commentators get Irish names right.
Derek Riordan came on and was called RIordan
They used to call Liverpool Legend I Callaghan , CallaGhan
There's Tim Cahill known as Tim Kahill
And the one that really annoy's me. Where the fuck is the C in Doherty?

He is Derek RIordan. That's how he pronounces it!

And Tim Cahill pronounces his surname Kayhill.

And Tommy Docherty is spelled Tommy Docherty!

It's an interesting one. The "ch" pronunciation is actually a lot closer to the Irish original than our silent c approach.

Carry on

Maybe it's part of the same problem that leads people in Dublin to pronounce "Dorset St." "Dawr-SETTE St."

and we're any better?

not one of the RTE commentators or panellists could pronounce Kuyt during the world cup, felt like texting in 'Kuyt rhymes with Shite'

Danger Here manged to call him all the following during one of the games

Keet
Koot
Kweet

If only he'd known, he could have spouted some 'keeping Kuyt quiet' line

i hate the english commentators more when they get it right, and they know theyd did and they say it all smug. like with spanish names and they put on a fake accent.

they should revert to referring to players in old pre war style terms.

"and the cheeky winger slips the ball to the big number 9 who kicks in past the goalkeeper! i believe he enjoyed that one, as did the manchester crowd! now we return to our london studio for news on the latest ration cuts"

I thought they only brought in rationing during and after the war.

(I may be wrong though)

Dion O Cuinneagáin caused havoc for the BBC rugby crowd years ago, cant they be bothered finding out how to pronouce it.

Sami Hyppia is either Hoopeya or Hippyya never just one or the other or Dontcha O Callaghan
