The home leg is key. If Liverpool put their poor pre-season form behind them and hit the ground running they could make the second leg a formality. If however we struggle to turn them over it could make for a tricky 2nd leg (regardless of where it's being played).
I'd go for the following line-up:
Reina
Riise
Carragher
Hyppia
Finnan
Gerrard
Alonso
Sissoko
Pennant
Crouch
Bellamy
With Kewell, Aurelio and Gonzalez all likely to be unavailable I'd give Gerrard a run on the left of midfield (he has played there for Ingerlund). Momo & Alonso performed very well in the centre together for many games towards the end of last year so I see no immediate reason to break up that partnership esp. when Gerrard can fill in well at left mid.

I'd give Gerrard a run on the left of midfield. That seems crazy to me. Putting your most influential player in a position that doesn't suit him is not a good idea like when Rooney played on the flanks for United. Gerrard should be central or right but not left.

09-08-2006, 06:57 PM
id imagine rafa will have gerrard, alonso and sissoko in the middle with belamy and pennant or gonzalez supporting the lanky fucker.Yeah, it could be an aul 4-2-3-1 job with Pennant and Bellamy flanking Gerrard to make up the 3 part.

Gerrard is more than capable of playing out on the left and influencing the play aswell as being a real danger when cutting inside. If Liverpool had 6 Gerrards they'd probably all get in our current first team.
With the so many of the options for left midfield unlikely to be available (aurelio, kewell & gonzalez) that only leaves Zenden and, while I think he's a useful squad player, I'd much prefer to see Gerrard play in a position that isn't quite ideal than see Pennant lose out for Zenden. With Zenden and Gerrard on the flanks we'd really lack width as both will tend to drift inwards.
I think it's unlikely that Gerrard will start out left but, with the current players available tonight, that would be the formation I'd go for.

Input the frequency - 10758, 22.0, V, 5/6 and then find the channels. Scroll to ITV1 and press the yellow button to store the channel, then press select. Uefa have decided to play Liverpool's UEFA Champions League tie with Maccabi Haifa at a neutral venue.
The away tie with the Israeli champions had raised security fears because of the current unrest in the Middle East.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez had called on the game to be played outside Israel because of the dangers to his team and supporters.
Uefa said in a statement: "Uefa have today decided in the light of the ongoing armed conflicts in and around Israel, no European competition matches can be staged in the country until further notice.
"Uefa had already decided last week to move the first-leg matches of the Uefa Cup second qualifying round involving Israeli teams to be played outside Israel.
"Uefa has also informed the Israeli FA and its clubs they should be providing alternative venues within the territory of one of the Uefa member associations.
"The Uefa administration will continue to monitor the safety and security situation in Israel and further decisions will be made according to changes in the situation."
Ukraine has been mentioned as a possible alternative with the Dynamo Kiev president Igor Surkis claiming he had been approached by Uefa to stage the match.
Liverpool play the first leg of their third qualifying round at Anfield on Wednesday, with the return leg scheduled for August 23.

Kiev seems like a very odd choice. You'd think if it was a neutral ground it would be one that would suit Haifa, like Cyprus would.

Its a bit worrying to be honest after seeing United and the Gooners who look to be ready for ther new season now
A slow start last season cost us , you have to start winning immediately or fall behind the rest fast

Well one thing was obvious from lawst nights performance. If Bellamy plays, Liverpool have to go 4-4-2, with an actual striker up top with him. Bellamy drifts far too wide at times, which is fine if you`ve got players willing to get into the box, which Zenden wasnt doing in the first half and which Pennant rarely did either.
On Pennant, I`d like to know how many crosses he got in last night.....i`d say it was close to 20. He did his job but there`s no use putting the balls in there if he`s not gonna have the support to finish it off.
Bellamy took his goal well but at times he ran around like a headless chicken, perhaps he was frustrated with the lack of link up play in the final third. Rafa seems to be unsure of his best formation going into the new season, which may be a little unsettling at the start.

id say pennant easily has the most crosses every year.
he needs to improve in two areas though. cutting in and scoring and better delivery when the ball is moving. he can ping a ball as good as beckham when the ball is dead or going slow, but when hes running at high speed he looses quality...

I missed the 1st half cos I was playing footie myself. We looked quite positive in the 2nd half, really took the game to them but perhaps lacked a bit of guile (which will come with fitness/sharpness and the assimilation of pennant, bellamy & gonzalez into the team).
I noticed that Gerrard spent a portion of the 2nd half at left-midfield (which I advocated pre-match) - no-on is saying that it's his best position but as we saw on last night's evidence it's better to play him out of position than to give Zenden a run at Pennant's expense.
Any thoughts on Sissoko's yellow? It looked very justified on first viewing but the more I watched the replay the less convinced I became. I think he got the ball initially but perhaps got penalised because it was a bit of a lunge. I think if you play sissoko you have to just allow for the fact that (for the next few years at least) he's going to miss ~4 games a year through suspension.

maybe he got it for persistant niggly fouls, but looked harsh. there were a few tackles from both sides more deserving of a card. sissoko is gauranteed a few suspensions every season. if it was for persistant fouling boccoli shoulda got one as well.
but on the bright side, djimi was sold to charlton.

This thing has upset written all over it. The Israelis are further into their season and look fitter. They are indignant at the game being moved. They also have an away goal. Liverpool are without old-stagers Carragher and Riise. This is particulary relevant as they defend zonally from set pieces which takes some time to learn for the new lads.
If I were Rafa I'd play:
Reina
Finnan Sami Agger Aurelio
Gerrard Momo Alonso Gonzalez
Crouch Bellamy
And even in that line up there are too many new lads for my liking, maybe Garcia could slot in instead of Gonzalez.

a good line up, but i'd be reluctant to put garcia in. they need someone to hold the ball a bit more than he does. the last thing liverpool need is their own team giving the ball to haifa encouraging wave after wave of attack. squeaky bum time for pool fans.
