According to the Daily Mail:
It is the question on every football fan's lips. What did the Italian footballer say to prompt Zinedine Zidane's shocking headbutt in the closing moments of Sunday's World Cup final?
The answer, it has emerged, was a vile stream of racial and personal abuse.
First Marco Matterazzi called the French star the Italian equivalent of 'n*****', and then insulted both his mother and his Muslim background by saying he is the 'son of a terrorist whore.
The revelation will prove even more of an embarrassment to football's governing body than the ironic award of player of the tournament to French captain Zidane.
To millions of television viewers around the world it appeared as if the two sportsman were enjoying a jocular exchange, until the moment Zidane lowered his head and sent his opponent plummeting to the ground.
With the help of an expert lip reader the Daily Mail was able to decipher what led to the violent outburst.
First defender Marco Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane who once played for Italian side Juventus - grabbed his opponent and told him 'hold on, wait, that one's not for a n***** like you.'
It is not clear whether the Italian was referring to the ball heading their way or his own groping of Zidane.
The expert, who can lip read foreign languages phonetically and translate with the aid of an Italian interpreter, was unable to see what Zidane said in reply.
But she saw that as the players walked forward Materazzi said: 'We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore.'
Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying,: 'So just f*** off.'
The translation tallies with the words of Zidane's agent who said the player had told him the Italian made a 'very serious' comment.
'Zinedine didn't want to talk about it but it will all come out in the next week,' said Alain Miglaccio.
'He is a man who normally lets things wash over him but on Sunday night something exploded inside him.'
To some observers who saw Zidane floor his opponent with nine minutes to go, that description might appear an understatement.
The 34-year-old midfielder was red carded in a move that did his side no favours as they went on to lose the final on penalties

Hmmmm Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the Daily Mail are reporting racist slurs rather than whipping up racism themselves???

yeah i know, but i wouldn't descibe those two as creditable sources.
The credibility of the lip-reading profession is in tatters this morning after at least five lip-readers provided Fleet Street's newspapers with wildly different accounts of what Marco Materazzi said to Zinedine Zidane during the World Cup final.
With neither player willing to publicly reveal what was said during their lengthy exchange before the France captain planted his head into the Italian's chest, the papers have called on lip-readers to reveal how Zidane was provoked.
Something, though, appears to have been lost in the various translations.
The Sun's lip-reader, for instance, claims that Materazzi called Zidane a "son of a terrorist whore".
Just to cover all bases, the newspaper also cites 'a source close to the Italian squad claiming that after twisting Zidane's nipple, Materazzi asked him: "What, don't you like it?" The French captain replied: "A bit too hard to turn me on." But Materazzi shouted: "Well, I did it that way because I know that's how your mother likes it."'
Not so, according to The Guardian. Their lip-reader claims that the charming Materazzi said, "I wish an ugly death to you and all your family," and then told Zidane to "go f**k yourself".
The Independent's lip-reader has a slightly different interpretation as well. 'It is alleged that Zidane responded by sarcastically telling Materazzi that he could have his shirt as a souvenir at the end of the match,' the newspaper reports. 'The Italian is alleged to have responded by saying that Zidane could keep it for his sister and then made an extremely derogatory comment about her. That version is backed up by lip-readers from the Brazilian TV channel Globo. They claim Materazzi called her a "prostitute".
Little wonder that there is such confusion when the exchange between an Italian and a French-Algerian is being translated into English via Brazil.
As for The Daily Mirror, their frontpage informs readers that 'The furious French captain attacked Marco Materazzi after the defender allegedly sneered: "All Muslims are terrorist b*****s."
'And sources claim the Italian even branded Zidane's Algerian mum Malika "a whore".'
As if that wasn't quite enough explanations to sate your curiosity, The Daily Mail reports that 'Materazzi had insulted the memory of one of Zidane's closest confidants and former coaches, Jean Varraud. The former AS Cannes coach died of cancer shortly before the tournament.'
Nor is there a consensus in Italy or France over what was said.
A number of Italian newspapers claim that Zidane insulted Materazzi's mother, with the former Everton defender saying that the Frenchman "made love to his sister".
However, Materazzi's agent has also reportedly offered his own unique account of the verbal exchange, claiming that Zidane offered to swap shirts later and the Italian replied: "'I'd rather take the shirt off your wife."
A statement from the Paris-based racism group SOS Racism had earlier insisted that Materazzi called Zidane a 'dirty terrorist'.
In his only public comment so far since Sunday's final, Materazzi denied the accusation, telling Italian news agency Ansa: "It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I'm ignorant. I'm ignorant - I don't even know what the word means."
Pointedly, he refused to reveal exactly what he did say, however.
Zidane's first public comments in almost a month - he refused to speak to the press after their heavy criticism of France's performance against Switzerland - are expected by the end of the week.

i suppose we'll never know until zidane does a press conference to clear it all up.

Sure Ericsson didnt even know *everything* about his own team.
And even if Marco did mention his mother it still does not give the Algerian the right to react the way he did.

You are either clueless or just plain racist.
ZZ was born in Le Castelanne in Marseille. This makes him French.
Vieira was born in Senegal. He is naturalised rather than purely French.
Desailly was born in Ghana. He is naturalised rather than purely French.
See the difference?

Materazzi denies terrorist insult
Zidane reacted to Materazzi's insult by headbutting the defender
Italy defender Marco Materazzi says he did insult France's Zinedine Zidane during the World Cup final, just before Zidane was sent off for a headbutt.
But Materazzi denied reports he called Zidane a "terrorist" or used insulting language towards Zidane's mother.
"It was the kind of insult you will hear dozens of times and just slips out of the ground," Materazzi is quoted in Italian paper La Gazetta dello Sport.
"I didn't call Zidane a terrorist and certainly didn't mention his mother."
Zidane looked at me with super arrogance... it's true I shot back with an insult
Marco Materazzi
Zidane, who was born and grew up in Marseille, is the son of Algerian immigrants and has suffered taunts about his heritage throughout his football career.
But Materazzi added: "I am ignorant, I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is; my only terrorist is her," he said pointing to his 10-month-old daughter.
"I did not bring up Zidane's mother; for me a mother is sacred."
Materazzi and Zidane became involved in a verbal spat with 10 minutes to go in extra-time with France and Italy drawing 1-1 in the World Cup final.
After Materazzi's insult Zidane shoved his head into the Italian's chest and was sent off, with Italy going on to win the match 5-3 on penalties.
"I held his shirt, for only a few seconds," said Materazzi, who had scored Italy's equaliser after Zidane put France ahead from the penalty spot.
"He turned towards me and scoffed at me, looking at me with super arrogance, up and down.
"He said 'if you really want my shirt, you can have it later.'
"It's true, I shot back with an insult."
Just what did Materazzi say to provoke this reaction from Zidane?
Media organisations across Europe have been trying to decipher what Materazzi said to provoke such an extreme reaction from Zidane.
But it remains unclear exactly what was said and the BBC has broadcast two different versions.
BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.
She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.
The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:
Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".
He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".
Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.
Piara Powar, national co-ordinator for the anti-racism group Kick It Out told Five Live, said: "If there was a racial slur then Fifa needs to act."
Keith Hackett, head of referees in England, said that if it can be proved that Matterazzi racially abused the Frenchman, then Fifa should take retrospective action for "the good of the game."
