I fancy a punt on Luca Toni for top scorer @ 16/1. With Italy having such a piss-poor defence, they'll have to go out and play, and thankfully they've got an overabundace of talent in the final third.
Other ones I fancy: David Villa (20/1 on Coral, but can be found at as much as 29/1 if you shop about). Spain never do well, but their group is a potential turkey-shoot.
Dirk Kuyt @ 33/1 is way overpriced also, and 16/1 is great value for RVN.
Don't fancy lumping on any of the Brazil squad really.

overpricedIf you're looking for purely speculative bets on players that seem overpriced then look no further than Kezman at 200/1+ on Betfair. He may not score at all and they may get knocked out in the first round (I have a sneaking feeling they'll do well) but the odds seem ridiculously high to me.

Latest warm up match a rollicking 0-0, but I think you're right it's a good price, esp. that 50 /1. Even 20 ain't too bad, though more realistic

I'll bet you 20 they won't concede the most goals. Their defense isn't as bad as it's made out to be (Lucio is one of the best defenders in Europe), and they have the likes of Edmilson and Emerson to break up the opposition attacks at the root. Some team who get humped in the first round (take your pick) would be a safer bet.

Ok, I've decided $20 notes or so on Klose. He will play won't he? He's tall and they have a very easy group, so I reckon a langerload of corners will do the trick. Hat trick and another two or three in the group alone and then sweat on others not scoring in later rounds.

Yup. Worthy of a punt, he's a better player than he was four years ago; Germany aren't as poor (especially in attack as they were four years ago either, and have a far easier group to boot.

hey guys and girls
I've ventured over from the fawk, but my brother has a sports betting forum that some of you are already members of (121sport)
anyways, whenever theres a major sporting event on, they usually hold competitions. They have a world cup competition running at the moment, and entry is free, yes FREE, all you have to do is sign up (which is also free) and place your bets! Theres a US$2500 prize involved, I'm not sure but I think the top 3 winners get something.
there usually arent many people that enter the competitions, so you should have a good chance.... thats if you know your football ;)
anyways heres the link http://www.121s.com/viewtopic.php?t=8315

Could you elaborate on that please? Not familiar with Betfair...You had 20 on at 20/1. Brazil are now 3/1 on Betfair.
Effectively this means the likelihood of you winning your bet has dropped from a 20/1 shot down to a 3/1 shot as Barca have already won the first leg of your double. You can now make back the 20 (or more if you want) you staked by laying Brazil on Betfair at 3/1 with a 60 liability. That would mean that if Brazil don't win the world cup you break even. However, if they do win it you are up 340. Do ya get me?
Another thing you could do is just take a guaranteed 85 profit now by laying 105 at 3/1 but that would be unadvisable because Brazil should advance easily enough to the second round and their odds will probably be shorter at some stage of the tournament.

1) First things first, make sure you write down every bet you make. If like me, you've got about 20 internet accounts, it's easy to forget just who you've backed and where. I once spent virtually a whole day trying to locate some golf winnings. Ignore any similar hastle, WRITE THEM DOWN!
2) Consider having a bet that encompasses all 64 games - i.e. the total tournament goals or red cards. By having a betting interest in every game - and that's what a lot of punters want - it avoids the ridiculous situation of trying to liven up one of the lower key matches by having a few punts and later realising you've just lost £50 on Iran v Angola.
3) Avoid backing odds-on shots. The World Cup is littered with favourites being held or beaten by minnows and continually backing big-priced favourites will soon empty your pockets. In the last World Cup only 24 out of 46 odds-on shots prevailed. To £100 level stakes that would have incurred odds-on backers a loss of over £1700.
4) Keep a close eye on the latest team and injury news. Some clued up punters already hold all sorts of fancy prices about Peter Crouch winning the Golden Boot or finishing as England's top scorer after being quick to assess that he would make the starting line-up. Even if these bets don't collect, they can always be laid back on Betfair to secure a profit either way.
5) Take note of possible tactical switches by coaches that can lead to players starting in different positions than normal. In 1998, I got wind that Dutch midfielder Philip Cocu would be starting up front for Holland against South Korea. Lo and behold, Cocu rifled home the opener in the 37th minute and the 20/1 gamble was landed. This time, it will be interesting to see where Steven Gerrard plays - in a midfield role or pushed further forward.
6) Don't blindly back the draw in the first round of games. It's a common and valid assumption that teams often go into the opening game with the thought that they must avoid defeat. That could translate into an early spate of draws but checking back on previous World Cups shows that you'd lose money blindly backing stalemates.
7) Keep on eye on who is likely to take their team's penalties. You may be aware of first-choice penalty takers but if they're off the pitch then who would step in? Could it be the centre-back - a 50/1 shot to score the first/last goal?
8) Take extra care when betting on the final round of group games. It may actually suit some teams to finish runners-up in their group to ensure an easier draw in the knockout stages. Although we can't say anyone would actively 'throw' their final game, it's certainly possible that such a team would field a weakened team, using the excuse of "resting star names". And if both teams go into the final group game needing a draw to ensure they both go through then don't be surprised to see a tepid 0-0.
9) Note the teams who do well in penalty shootouts. If extra-time doesn't produce a winner - it probably won't as teams are too scared to commit players to attack - then bookies will quickly issue prices for both teams to win the dreaded penalty shootout. For whatever reason, some teams can take them and others can't. So DO back Argentina and Germany (they both have a 3-0 record) and DON'T back England (0-2) and Italy (0-3).
10) Use oddschecker.com! It still amazes me how punters can wager thousands with one bookie when another is offering a bigger price. Opening numerous betting accounts isn't a sign that you need to call Gamblers Anonymous. It's just a sensible way of securing the best price and maximising your profits. Don't forget that many firms have special free bet offers when you sign up so you can turn these to your advantage too.

Pauleta at 25/1. That's the one. Portugal's group is a joke.
My money's on him too. He's my bet. That group being the leading reason.
I also threw a fiver on Crouch. Simply because he's such a hero.
a couple of other good pointers for a Holland win is their fantastic record in tounaments held in next door Germany..

Here`s what I`ve gone for:
David Villa @ 50/1 (in cashmans about 2 weeks ago) - 10
Raul @ 50/1 - 5
Luca Toni @ 18/1 - 5
Henry/France double @40/1 - 5
Portugal/Pauleta double 125/1 - 5
Argentina/Crespo double @40/1 - 5
Germany/Podolski double @ 100/1 - 5
Brazil/Ronaldo Double @ 18/1 - 40
Cristiano Ronaldo @ 100/1 - 5
Borgetti @ 50/1 - 5
And to kick things off tonight - Podolski 1st goal @ 5/1 - 20.
Bar Villa, every other price with Ladbrokes.
That΄s 90 euro on first scorer bets.
So if Luca Toni is top scorer you end up just 5 euro up?

Lads, there's no point on putting money on a player who isn't going to reach the semis of the competition. The top scorer always plays for a team who plays the maximum amount of games. Can anyone remember the last clear top scorer who didn't reach the semis at least?

My dad took me through betfair one night and i got lost. dont take betting too seriously. only small time gambler. Might bet around to learning some day, offset my losses.

only small time gambler. It doesn't matter. It's a useful tool for any gambler. You could have guaranteed yourself a nice profit before a ball was kicked tonight or even once Brazil took the lead and saved yourself the agony.

i put €3 on all the quarter final games and they all came in. Got back €200, i should have put a tenner on it. I also put €1 on Toni top goal scorer at 150/1 before the ukraine game. Also have €50 on Italy to win outright at 10/1

Just checked bodog.com right now............. couple of shite ones i've lost include RVN, Sheva Ballack and Crespo for top scorer.
Some ok ones still open for me include
Henry for top scorer 5 to win 60
Germany to win and Klose top scorer 5 to win 375
France and Henry top scorer 5 to win 190
Italy to win and Toni top scorer 5 to win 240
France to win World Cup 10 to win 120
C.Ronaldo for "young player" of the tourney 5 to win 25
have lost 25 so far but reckon most of them were worth the gamble and i won a solid favourites to win accumulator in the first round so i'm up no matter what. If France win and Henry does a job i've every chance of doing very well!! -AmadeusDC-

I made money throughout on accumulators. I made 200 euros on a 3 euro bet on the quarter finals games. I put 50 euros on Italy at 10/1 before the tournament. I have had 800 euros sent to me by Paddypower all from money that i had one anyway. ie. i was not betting with my own money. So i had a great world cup really.

So not too great. The world cup cost me £18 and an untold amount of hours of my employers time. If I hadn't had a £200 win on a day out at Ascot I'd be pretty miffed.
