Yeah and a good farewell to the likes of trevor hogan, rob henderson, mike prendergast and paul burke who were all playing their last game for munster apparantely. An irish 1-2-3 in the celtic league. How bad sure

I'm surprised that Prendy is going. I'd imagine that young Gerry Hurley might get a development contract now. We need a couple of centres now as well. Apparently the putative Kieran Lewis move is now a dead duck unfortunately.
I was genuinely delighted for Hendo getting a medal after the years he's given Munster (and the shite he had to put up with in more recent times. He came on against Leinster and was as good as I've ever seen him in red (weeeell, maybe not as good as in the first Lions test in 2001). He had a fine game against Cardiff as well on sat, I'm glad that people's final memory of him in a Munster jersey will be as positive as it is. Apparently he's off to earn his coaching badges and seems likely to stay in Ireland/Munster. Jim Williams is sizing up his options WRT Saracens but I hope the MB put down a quality deal to keep at Munster, he's formed a large part of making Munster successful this season.
All in all, I await the summer period with interest. Roll on the NZ, AUS and Churchill cup tests

You reckon ireland can nick a test down under?
i dont know logic would suggest they cant coming off a long hard season meeting a fresh enough all blacks and wallabies sides but i dont know i've a feeling they could get one win or run one test very close. its a pity they arent playing the wallabies first i think they're very beatable now put they'll be after 2 games against england to work on a few things and ireland could possibly be resting a few of the bigger names.
be great to have a succesful tour would round off apart from 40 minutes against france a fantastic season for irish rugby

Yes.
They are good enough to do so. Now all we need is for them to start believing it. They nearly did believe in 2004. Irish rugby still has not got to the stage where it can say (like Munster can now), "Put the side in front of us and we'll beat them, because we fear nobody".

I don't 100% agree with everything BOD says here, but the gist of it is right. I think he might be providing a bit of ammo for NZ though:
'Good time to turn over Kiwis'
31/05/2006
By Diarmuid O'Flynn
WITH a long, hard and successful season already behind them, Triple Crown won, Heineken Cup and Celtic League trophies resting in Munster and Ulster, respectively, summer beckoning, the Irish senior rugby squad members could well be forgiven for thinking — 'to hell with this, a tour to New Zealand in the middle of their winter?
Two brutal tests against a team we've never beaten, then travel another few thousand miles to the arse end of Australia to play another tough test against a team that has a lot to prove? I'm outa here!'
"You could look at it that way," Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll agrees: "You could alternatively look at it that we've managed to win a huge amount, why not push ourselves that one step further, go and do that one thing no Irish team has ever done in New Zealand before?
"These tours are organised years in advance, it's not something that's been sprung on us. A lot of the boys are feeling fresh and if you saw the training yesterday and today, people are really in good form.
"The success of Munster and Ulster has rubbed off on the rest of the squad, I think in general the boys are looking forward to going down and giving it their best shot."
Given the pasting the much-hyped Lions got down in New Zealand this time last year, not a lot of people will be giving that shot any chance of finding its target. "I think that suits us fine," says O'Driscoll.
"We've become a team that has to deal with whatever tag we're given, be it favourites or underdogs. What we do know is that when this Irish team performs we're capable of beating anyone in the world, it's just a matter of making sure that performance becomes consistent.
"Sometimes you go to a place like New Zealand, you may need them to slightly under-perform, capitalise on that, but if we perform to the highest levels we know we're capable of, we're not going to be far away from a win there."
Brian was captain of that Lions side (didn't last very long, shoulder famously dashed and hopes infamously upended in the opening minutes of the first test in an incident that has now been flogged to death, so enough about that), did he see it as perhaps more advantageous to be going there with his country, a tight unit, rather than as one of four disparate nationalities? "The fact that Eddie (O'Sullivan, coach) isn't bringing 75 people down might be slightly in our favour alright!" he laughs, a jocular reference to Lions manager Clive Woodward's mammoth tour numbers.
"Invariably, national teams will have more continuity, they've been together for longer, they know each other better, tend to represent each other better than a touring team like the Lions. Hopefully we'll bring the success of the Triple Crown, the unity that came with that success, down to the tour. I don't see a better time to go down and turn over the Kiwis than now, with the success we've had this year. We've got a great balance, a lot of experience but some exciting young players, guys who are starting to prove themselves.
"Denis Leamy has had a phenomenal season, Jerry Flannery also, Andrew Trimble played well in the 6-Nations, and when you see the likes of those coming through, you must have faith in Irish rugby for the next few years."
We've come close on many occasions, thrice in New Zealand; managed a draw at Lansdowne Road in 1973 (10-10), after Munster had done the same in Thomond Park (3-3), five years before that other, slightly more famous, encounter. But, never a win by Ireland. If they manage it on this tour, well, at home, in the likes of Limerick, Cork, Belfast, it would mean an extension to the current celebrations; what would such a win mean to the players, to Brian O'Driscoll? "It would be another notch, that's all. Sure it would be a huge thing to go down there and turn them over but you can't go over the top on these things. Realistically, you have to be on top of your game to beat them anywhere, but to beat them in the cauldron that's New Zealand, it's the toughest place in the world I've ever played test rugby. It would be enormous, but you really only think about things like that after you've done it."
I'm assuming that RTE aren't covering the Test series, anyone know if Sky are???
The Kiwis are on a different level to us at the moment, but this will be an experimental team that Graham Henry fields, so I guess it's as good a chance as any.
Not too hopeful though. We should definitely beat the aussies though. Jesus they were awful in lansdowne in november, just that we were worse.

Not really.
If they're in the All Blacks shirt, they're some of the best in the world, it might seem like a "weakened" team, but I've never seen a weak NZ team, ever.
NZ are the one team we've never beaten in our history, a 10-10 draw is the est we've ever done.
And I don't think that's going to change this time either.
My prediction is for a 15-20 point loss in the first match, run them tight in the second test, within a score and a close but losing match to Australia.
Lets not forget the past 6 nations. Ireland played well for a lot of it, but had an absolute stinker where it mattered, the first half of the France match. Munster play better than the sum of thier parts, Ireland seem to be the opposite, plenty of talented players underperforming.
I still say the captaincy should pass to POC.
And I'lll be watching it in my local Walkabout pub.

i would agree with most of what you have said except "munster playing better then the sum of thier parts", thats just crap i'm afraid man for man the munster pack is better then most in europe, stringer and ROG are arguably the best club half back pairing in europe and our backs are not the strongest going forward but are very rarely found wanting in defence

I disagree.
Munster have the best lineout in Europe, one of the best mauls and a very good ruck. They're near the top in off-loading but the scrum is not the top in Europe by any stretch of the imagination.
You'd want to be eating some odd mushrooms to think Munster have a very good backline.
So in summary, they have a pretty good pack, with a pretty major weakness in the scrum, and a workmanlike backline, yet they have beaten the best in europe? I'd say that's playing above the sum of their parts.

best lineout, ruck and maul, agreed.
not the best scrum but holds his own.
a backline thats not great going forward, but defensively they are one of the best if not the best. i'm not sure about this years HC but last year they conceded less tries then any other HC team.
having the strongest, lineout is a huge factor as is ruck and maul. and having a very strong defence is definitely not playing above themselves. but it looks like we'll have to agree to disagree

Bang on their Prionsias. The scrum ahs been put under serious pressure on several occasions this season, and is definitely not Munsters strong point. It's sufficient though, and does the job when it matters, such as for Stringers try in Cardiff. I think it's improved since Flannery came into the side though.
Munster have always been a team that played above the sum of their parts. They've never been a team of individual stars, but have always been a great team.

The only thing we can take from that is that we probably cant play as badly again. I reckon we'll have a real go in the first test and narrowly fall short- then get battered in the second. Beating the AB's away would put surpass even Munster's exertions.

Earra twas men against boys in the game in Lansdowne road.

Sure we can, provided the NZ team bus breaks down.
Looking at the general level of performance of the Irish team this year, I just cant see us getting it together at the end of the season to beat the All Blacks in their own backyard.

Ireland's SH touring record is actually not all that bad. We've come close to NZ down there a few times in fact, we were the first NH touring team to win south of the equator (against Aus in 1967 IIRC) and one of the 1970s touring sides beat Australia off the park in both tests.
After a triple crown, the HEC and Ulster's CL we have the players, players who have spent a season WINNING (well, maybe not the Ladyboys...). A good attitude is half the battle. If I was NZ I wouldn't fancy playing against our 2nd and 3rd row. DOC was very impressive in NZ last year and POC is after improving so much since this time last year. Young fellas like Trimble won't fear NZ either. Bring the black-pyjamad, disco-dancing smarm-merchants on I say.

Throwing around terms like 'probably the best in the world' willy-nilly is the kind of talk that will come back to haunt us. We have two genuinely world class players and a few very good players. Our scrum will very probably get dicked by the AB's and gain par with the Wallabies. There is no point in being defeatist but lets not forget the lessons of the Lions tour.

our scrum is weak but when it comes to lineouts we are much better then the AB's, our maul is same and at the ruck we are on a par. the backs are a different kettle of fish.i would challenge anyone to find better players in thier positions then the POC&DOC partnership and flannery.

Ah stop now. The AB's lineout has been faultless for nigh on two years now. POC still has to dislodge Chris Jack as the best lock in the world. And their rucking is what has won them most games in the last few years. Flannery has had a sterling first season but lets not go mad, he has yet to be tested by the best.

I am no Eddie apologist but your criticism of Eddie looks a little foolish in the light of recent events surely?
well look at it like this, geordan murphy week in, week out makes amazing breaks and shows his serious talent, yet eddies tactics have him stifled. d'arcy hasn't had a great past 2 seasons yet eddie won't drop him for a much better david trimble, the same can be said for MOK. the man refused to pick the best no. 6 in europe (trevor brennan) and leaves the likes of bob casey languishing. we scraped all our wins last 6N when really we could have easily pulled away from all the teams including the french had we employed decent tactics.
the worst thing about EOS is he is incapable of changing his tactics when they obviously aren't working. i would love to see Kidney in charge of ireland but not while he is at munster.
another thing about the irish side with EOS in charge is it completely lacks any passion even with the munster 1-10 who are the most passionate group of players in european rugby. eddie just can't get them to gell. with the players we have available to us and have had for the last 2 years an possibly since gatland left we should have been dominating europe, not jumping for joy at winning the triple crown, which in reality means fuck all, the competition is the 6 nations not the 4 nations
