Gerolsteiner's Stefan Schumacher takes the pink jersey on Stage 3 in Belgium.

Alessandro Petacchi broke his kneecap in a fall, still finished the stage but is out of the race.

The first 150 riders are separated by around 3 minutes, with the team time trial and some mountain stages on the way there is going to be a lot of changes.

Well I am right fucking sorry that it is not another GAA/rugby/soccer thread. I happen to like cycling and just like any other thread here, read it if you wish, maybe someone is interested, either way I don't care. If you have nothing positive or negative to say other than the response of a 9 year old, fuck off.

heh heh heh....good response.

Have been watching bits n pieces of it...whatever they show on eurosport really.
Is good to see that lots of teams are attacking ....they dont seem too afraid of discovery without lance (now I know he didn't ride the giro much..but still!)

I was watching the prologue on saturday, and Marc Scanlon was about to set off, and the commentators were taking the piss out of him a bit and calling him chubby, fat etc. In fairness to them, they did mention that he was a late replacement for another guy in his team who got sick or injured. Was kinda funny though....his skinsuit that he was wearing for the time trial did him feck all justice.

Jan Ulrich is quiet as well....although I know he's only just using it for training purposes before the tour....will be interesting to see how he does in the individual time trial though.......that will be a good indicator of what we can expect from him in july.....I really hope he does it this year!

It is live on OLN in the US, except my shite cable provider decided to remove OLN last year for some other shite channel.

Back to the racing, Ulrich is only 55 secs behind. Team Time Trial on thursday and first big day in the mountains on saturday. A big CSC vs Discovery showdown on the cards lets see.

Got my new bike too, got an upgrade to a Cervelo P2 SL, sweet machine.

Didn't realise we had representation - must keep an eye on him. Seemingly very tough route this year, loads of mountains and hard bastards too.

Parts of stages are almost offroad on top of that. The Tour de France organizers should take note of how to make a spectacle.

Not almost offroad....they actaually are!!!!

The last 8km of one of the hardest stages this year is ok a road that's not surfaced...basically your shitty old bog road type thing....except in (probably) baking heat and dry and dusty.

LEt me know how that bike goes for you....I'm probably going to invest in something along the same lines myself for next year....either something like what you have, or else the Trek Equinox 9, or the Speciallized Transition Comp. All are roughly in the same area price/spec wise....so will be good to get some feedback from a users perspective as opposed to the usual sales pitch that's found online.

Carmona...Marc Scanlon is riding for the AGR2 team.....he's probably no more than a domestique for the other guys on the team, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him drop out as he's obviously not race fit. A decent rider, although he'll never figure in any of the standings......I think he ranked fairly high in the Young Rider classification in the tour a year or two ago, so maybe one for the future!

the cervelo groupset is dura ace, which is unusual as most bikes in that price range are running, ultegra, 105 and dura ace combinations.

Empty now lad.

That's good...didn't realise it was a full dura ace groupset at all.

I'm tempted to build a bike up myself (with the help of local bike shop obviously!)....can get TT frames at a decent price on ebay......was thinking ultegra drive train/derailleurs and dura ace bar end shifter setup myself.......I think the dura ace would be wasted on me to be honest.

Looking at the classification there and I know they've only had 3 days and all, but if he's out of shape he's doing ok, 2.21 down in 124th place. There's loads a guys with 5,6,8 or 10 minutes down already. So good luck to him, esp. for the mountains.

2.21 is not much, lets see how he does in the mountains, which don't suit his big frame.

Suppose he's pulling an Armstrong and concentrating on the big one.

But in saying that, if you consider the amount the other riders who won multiple Tours against Lance's theirs are more impressive IMO, because they were riding all season long not just concentrating on the one event.

London in 2007

Basso CSC team is very strong also, which can be a big factor in the team time trials, I know in 2004 that they limited the amout of time that a team can lose in the time trial and it was a bit of a farce.

I spent 2 weeks in teh pyrenees earlier in the year and got to cycle on a number of climbs that were used in the tour......unbelievab le...hills that go on for 10-15 miles and steep all the way...

There are plenty of companies offering 1/2 week long holidays now where you spend time in the alps and pyrenees during the tour.....cycle some of the climbs the day before the tour arrives and stay and catch them as they pass the following day.....also takes in the start of some of stages where you get to mix with the riders and check out their gear in detail...definitely something i'd like to do.

Ulrich is about 20 mins down on GC, there has been rumours about his excess weight during the off season, which is usually a good indicator of his TDF form, not sure if he will be able to pick it up before July 1. He does have a strong team to help him as does basso.

Basso's to lose, well next week is an unbelieveabley hard one in the mountains, so the pure climbers will gain, Basso only needs to have one bad day.

Apparently the TDF plays into Ullrich's hands - long time trials and not many mountain top finishes. But it seems once again his form before is questionable, as is his weight, i don't know why he just doesn't get himself into shape this year of all years.

Joan Horrach Rippoll's won the stage, biggest victory of the 32 year old 6 year career. He and a gropu of six riders finished about 7 minutes ahead of the magila rose and some in that group made big gains on General Classification. Sergui Gonchar crashed and was dropped on the last climb and is about 10 minutes down on GC.

TDF 2005 King of the Mountains Michael Rasmussen did not start and the irishman Mark Scanlon abandonned.

I think Ulrich is looking quite good.....looks like he's going to peak just in time for the tour de france...........goo d to see him doing some damage in the time trial yesterday.
Hopefully, he'll have even 1/2 good days in the mountains next week...even just for his own confidence. It would be fantastic to see him blow the others away, even if it was only on 1 stage.....as if to say "Wait til July when I'll be really fit". Come on ya fat bastard ya.

Shame to see scanlon dropping out, but I'm not surprised really, seeing as he wasn't supposed to be riding it anyway and was only a last minute replacement for another lad on his team.

Team CSC covered all the attacks on the first 3 hours of the race today, on the last climb Basso made his break ( Lance Armstrong style) and finished by taking more time from his rivals, they couldnt stay with him only Piepoli managed it and on the descent to the finish flew away from Basso. Basso was a lot more careful on the descent.

Have you seen the highlights from yesterdays stage yet?.....ulrich was driving the peleton on in the last 5km of the stage....was flying it and really strung out the riders behind him......I'm telling ya, he's looking bloody strong....doesn't look at all heavy either....I have a good feeling about him.

Good to see bettini getting a stage in his home tour as well....probably won't see him for the rest of the week now....it's time for Basso and his CSC boys to shine again in the hills.

I didnt see the highlights but I he was working with his team for pollack in the sprints and even went back to the team car to get food and drink for them.

You think he faking on the Giro, 28 mins down on GC.

Merkx always maintained that the best prep for the Tour De France was to win the tour of italy.

Times have changed alot since the likes of Merkyx was riding though.

I don't think he's faking....but I don't think he's pushing himself hard in the hills either.....the power is obviously there....his win in the time trial proved that. I think he's doing what he said he would, and using the Giro to help him reach his peak for the Tour......he doesn't want to go 'too deep' on the mountains...and all the time his conditioning is improving. Plus it will be interesting to see how Basso copes with pushing hard in the Giro and in the Tour as well.....he's never had to do that before....and you don't see any of the other contenders for the tour racing in the Giro either....Landis, Vino and so on. Plus, think of the amount of pressure that's going to be on Basso in the tour after winning the Giro!!!....he'll never ever have faced anything like that before.
I think I'm going to throw a few quid on Ulrich....I've had a feeling all year that he would do it. (he's 9-4 at the moment on Paddy Power).

All that said....Vino is 13-2 - that's definitely worth a few quid in my book.

maybe he is keeping himself for the tour. but last year (or the year before, can't remember tbh) he had a great winter and looked all set to give armstrong a solid challenge, but didn't. i'd be reluctant to part with my hard earned cash for him.

Basso wins the stage and puts more time in to his rivals. CSC covered the breaks early on, but on the last climb to the finish he again blew the top 10 away, not even the specialist climbers could stay with him. Todays stage is another brutal one with a 5.5 km finish on a road that has only recently been paved.

Definitely....it's one thing that discovery probably lacked....their focus was solely on the tour, that they almost forgot about the spring classics etc....and the tour aside, they got very few victories in other races.
CSC and Quick Step are winning all round them this year, although Quick Step don't really have anybody that will figure in the GC in a stage race....Paolo Bettini and Tom Boonen will be good for a few stage wins though in most of them.

Leonardo Piepoli wins a second stage and Basso finishes just behind him, the top 10 lose more time to Basso. The satge was shortened because of concerns about the really bad weather at the top of the final climb, the race skipped one of the climbs, and the final "off-road" 5 km was also removed, which annoyed the local organizers as they had spent some money preparing the route for the race.

I saw that in the IHT, some of the riders did not want to race off-road so the race organizers gave in and had it paved. "Next, they´ll want breakfast in bed," was the quote.

Ya gotta love those organisers! They want the lads to climb their balls off and then they come across all shocked when the drugs scandals hit the news. Can't these guys ride a measly 170 kms a day up hill for a few weeks @ 50 kph without breakfast in bed. Goddamn wusses.
