In anticipation of the impending world cup, how about picking a best ever soccer 11. We could vote on the top 10 players for each position to come up with the best player. I think one of these was tried before but fizzled out at keeper stage.
So the ground rules.
How to pick players, do we take into account past record, reputation, achievements, actually seeing the player. I think we should include all these things as most of us won't have seen pele or puskas or stanley mathews play.
So anyway,
Lets begin with goalie's
I nominate
Lev Yahsin
Neville southall
Peter schmeical
Pat Jennings
Gordon Banks
nominate away and a poll can be set up for the top 10
If i remember rightly schmeical walked home on the last one, so some objectivity would greatly help this thing.

Southall for me. I have my own nominations but Southall was a goalkeeping genius.

I'd pick Lev Yashin. Incidentally, I think he's the only keeper ever to have won European Footballer of the year. Anyone know?
Some more names for the poll...
Dino Zoff - Italian keeper in 1982 World Cup winning squad
Ivo Victor - Czech keeper from 1976 European Championship winning squad.

I nominate Rinat Dasayev (sp?) to be part of the poll.

Peter Schmeical

Gordon Banks
taking the criteria above into account i would have to say schmeichel as he is the only one ive seen play on a regular basis, southall a few times and read about the others in particular yahsin.
others i might consider would be toldo, pagliuca, kahn, casillas.

what about our own Pakki Bonner. Only for that save against Daniel Timofti for Romainia half this country wouldn't even know what soccer is.

true but im afraid my everlasting memory of packie will be wim jonk in WC '94,closely followed by his god awful attempts at anchoring TV3's CL coverage.

Bonner - a great Celt but not a great Celtic player. Celtic have never had good goalkeepers and he is one of the best of an extremely bad bunch. Had a massive punt on him though.

the backpass rule finished him as a keeper. shouldn't have played in the 94 world cup. he was up there with the best in the world 88-90

Alan Kelly was excellent in 94, one of the best keepers in Britain at the time. Infinitely better than bonner who gave the whole defence the jitters.

Shay Given has been excellent for the last 4 or 5 seasons but I'd probably still give it to Schmeical

Peter Schmeichel by a country mile.
All partisan bias aside, no one could live with Schmeichel.
Euro championships in 92, Arsenal in the cup semi, Newcastle away in 95/96.
Quite simply the best.

I'd have to put Casillas up there as well for his age he's won a hell of alot and without him Madrid would be in shambles with that defence if only the Sapnish National Team could sort things out in big tournaments.

Cech and Schmeichel would get honourable mention.

Joel Bats best goalkeeper by a country mile in Mexico 86. I remember his performance against Brazil in the quarter final and he even managed to save a penalty from Zico.
He deserves a mention.
For a more flamboyant entertaining goalkeeper how about the Colombian Rene Higuita.
My vote however would have to go to Schmeical as he is the best goalkeeper that i have seen in my lifetime.

although anyone recall the Austrian keeper from teh late 80's/early 90's called Linderberger (spelling could be out). He was a great keeper but never really made it high profile.

After Schmeical, Nigel Martyn would be my favourite goalie. Twas bad timing for him that Chris Woods and David Seaman were featured so prominatley for england around the early 90's.
No love for Gerry Peyton?

Well that would apparently get rid of about 95 % of the users here, but for the record. Andy Goram, there was always two of him in goal.
That is all.

Sometimes under-rated these days, as Shilton was also very good in a similar era, but for me, this guy was one of the best
