I hope they win the cup. Most clubs would just crawl through the last few games of the season but they kept up the tempo all the way. Some beautifully gifted players too like Benayoun. Fair dues.

To be fair to Spurs, any player they substituted looked ill. They'd hardly make something like that up.

Typical Arsenal wank.......They were shiting themselves all week that west Ham would roll over. (Even Arsehole started playing his mind tricks) Well they did'nt need to seeing as half our team were fucked with food poisoning. I for one though will be shouting for Liverpool and Barcelona this week.
Spurs are one of the youngest sides in the premiership and two or three decent buys for next season will improve our chances of getting champions league footie next year.

imagine spurs couldnt finish ahead of a piss poor arsenal team this year.
what a pathetic reflection on spurs. That arsenal could lose 11 games and still finish ahead of them despite being the worst arsenal league team under wenger....
ahh well, in this day and age any team that would trust a hotel to cook for them should be fucked out of professional football. Arsenal bring their chefs to all hotels. Its only common sense considering how easy it would be to slip performance enhancing drugs into their stew....

Yes it is sour grapes. To hear the West Ham fans yesterday taking the piss at the end of the game really wound me up. I have always had a lot of time and respect for West Ham, in the way they try to play the game and the actual type of footie they produce.(check out my posts congratulating West Ham on reaching the Cup final) But since when have they had such love for Arseholes as to do them this favour? Anyway that respect ended yesterday. I will be shouting for Liverpool big time on saturday something I have never really done before.
apologies for calling you an Arsenal fan.
So on to next season...Jol needs to buy two or three decent players. My thoughts are two mid fielders and a striker. Then we will see....

Did you hear John Gregory (yes, I know, he's a tool) on Football First last night? He said that as a player he'd always regarded Spurs as a comprehensive school and Arsenal as a public school. They just do things better.

do they live in london? i work up at west ham, when we played them earlier in the season 3 or 4 pubs on either side of london were smashed up, on of them the west ham yobs took pictures of and run up t-shirts saying 'white hart pain' with the picture printed. this game the 2 nearest pubs had thier windows borded up as a precautionary measure 3 days before hand, this never happened when we played millwall or cardiff last year. and the level of police there yesterday was the highest i've seen at the stadium in my 2 years working there. to add to that i've been to every away london game and the police levels were the highest up at white hart lane then any other.

Fair enough. I'm not saying there isn't a rivalry there, obviously there is. But I still say your claim that it was the biggest rivalry in english football is a bit much. Especially when most spurs fans seem to think of Arsenal as their main rivals.
And I'm sure you get loads of shit like that happening at all teh big derbies. Sure look at all the trouble at the Liverpool/United FA cup game.

most spurs fans did think of arsenal but that was some time ago now, look at it now thinks are different. i would easliy put the destruction caused by both sets of fans up there with the manchester derby, he birmingham derby and the liverpool/united games. the only thing is the birmingham and this london derby don't get publicised as much in ireland as irish fans in the majority only support the big 3 or 4 teams of the time. if you spent one half season in the uk for matches then you'd be alot more informed

I'm sure it is, but any spurs fan I've ever met, if you ask them who they ahte the most, they don't even have to think before mentioning Arsenal. Ask any city fan and its' united, any birmingham fan it's villa, any liverpool fan it's united.
So the fact that a lot of spurs fans consider Arsenal their biggest rivals suggests to me that the west ham rivalry is not as intense as the ones I've mentioned above.
Again, I'm not saying there isn't a rivalry, but if half the clubs supporters don't recognise another club as their biggest rivals, then how can it lay claim to be the biggest in English football??

Of course shifts in rivalry can happen, but usually when one clubs fortunes change for the worse. Surely, in the first season that both clubs have been chasing the same goal in years, the rivalry between Arsenal and Spurs would be at its worst for years as well????

I'm not disagreeing with you. Rangers would be Celtic's rivals, no doubt about it but the real vitriol when the games come round is Celtic v Hearts or Aberdeen v Rangers.
Maybe the same applies to West Ham and Spurs.

A close colleague of mine is an Everton fan and for him, the big rival is Liverpool.
But, as I think you mentioned elsewhere in a different context, the same might not be true from a Liverpool fan's point of view. For them, a bigger rival is (probably) Man Utd. But one comes from being neighbours and the
other comes from respective successes on the pitch, so not the same thing.
Are Newcastle and Sunderland the only clubs to have such a strong mutual rivalry? Or is it just that neither has had any success recently to confuse the issue?

I'm gutted I've missed out on this bit of banter so I'm weighing in devoid of context when I quote the above nugget.
I don't agree or disagree with Liam - cos I simply have no basis to - but I think he was slightly unfairly shouted out of it for saying possibly the "biggest derby in England". OK he went off in a huff but in a way I don't blame him when looking at the above quote from Eoin.
This whole thing is unquantifiable, that needs to be stated from the outset.
And it makes me once again chuckle that non-Premiership occasions like, for example, the Bristol derby - as rare as it is - doesn't even get a mention. And what will they be saying when Swansea and Cardiff renew old acquaintances - probably a lot actually because we will have 'heard' of it. That's what gets me the most of it. Eoin's point hadn't Sky News to back it up and so Eoin and his Spurs friend won't buy it. Hooliganism is on the up in England but we don't hear of any of it - suppressed in media. Who saw the CCTV of Wales V England for example? That didn't make the headlines but it did happen.
Thanfully Mon brought a bit of clear sightedness to the occasion by firstly pointing to the Rangers/Aberdeen "vitriol" (I've a bit more knowledge of this than Celtic/Hearts but take his word for that too) - spot on, that's massive and has a recent development the kind of which was discounted by the collective sagesse of the forum's resident experts. These new rivalaries are possible lads...
Once again simplistic dated opinions serve nobody. Maybe listen to Liam's experience a bit rather than maybe pointing to his hyperbole - which probably intended to enforce his point.
But anyway, I shall muse again on that quote from Eoin - if I was to have a signature, that would be a contender. Brilliant.

Brilliant.
You should have read the whole thread. Once again, you ignore context and claim somebody has said something stupid, when in fact, taken in the context of the thread, it was a perfectly valid statement.

I had already read the thread very carefully but since I'm not actually stubborn all the time (;)) I did so again under your very kind recommendation.
Apologies to Eoin (you stepped back a bit from the debate to a certain extent, conceding certain points) but I have to drag up what I objected to again in its context;
[IN RESPONSE TO FULL HAM] youobviously don't know the rivalry between tottenham and west ham, its by far the biggest london rivalry if not the biggest in the english league
I know looads of spurs fans and not one of them has EVER mentioned west ham as a rival.
Are they living in London?
No. But they've been over a few times. I watched the premiership last night with one of them and not once did he give out about west ham the way he seethed when they showed henrys goal from the derby a few weeks ago.
My high horse chuckle stands I’m afraid. The bit in bold is top class.
Sound, I did in fact read your 18 months high horseness but I felt your high horseness since I’ve been doing my whinge crusade was too high horsey for me to bother addressing. In short, I wasn’t referring to you and when I read through again under Coin’s top advice, I realised why; because you didn’t say anything.
Biggest rivalry in England? Come off the stage.[…]
I've lived in London for 18 months chap and yer talking cobblers. It's not even the biggest in London, never mind being up there with Utd/ Liverpool.[…]
Yes. No. Answering questions pre-emptively is a bit silly.[…]
It is clear that you have made a decision. Dont let our facts and logic stand in the way.[…]
I dont know if you can see my posts from atop your high horse but I lived in London for 18 months and in other places in the UK- going to games where I went. Therefore my opinion is not based on what we see over here. And anyone contending that Spurs V West Ham is the biggest rivalry in football is talking guff.
What do you actually say there? The “facts and logic” bit is especially hilarious in that light – what facts have you come out with? Then the last bit addressed to me says nothing but the fact that you didn’t read what I said in reference to his "biggest rivalry in football [...] guff” so I’ll re-remind you:

what level is that? champions league finals is it?
i dont blame you for being pissed...
If my team finished behind the worse arsenal league team for 20 years id be pissed too.
If my team spent all night before "their" biggest game of the season literally shitting themselves id be pissed.
Maybe the rivalry between west ham and spurs became so strong when arsenal stopped giving a toss about spurs because they were no longer competive games. Spurs had to find a rival that they could become equal with so they chose the hammers.....
but most of all.....
id be pissed too if i was subjected to all them spurs games all year and all i had to look foward to was a uefa cup that no one gives a fuck about. not even the touts on ebay
no disputing Arseholes record against Spurs over the last ten years. I still think they are poxed to be in the champions league final though and to be honest a little flattered.
Spurs have been shit since Sugar took over the club. Mediocre spending breeds mediocrity. This season was the start of something new. for the first time in years we were competing with Arsholes and hopefully we will again next year, depending on what we buy.
As i said True to form their is no competing with arseholes record over the last decade or so. But sport is cyclical in nature. One of my first ever London Derbys was a 5-0 thumping of Arseholes in '83....it may take time but the wheel does turn.

Well to be fair to them, they're form in the CL has been a lot better than their premiership form . To say they don't deserve to be in the final is abit harsh. They won their group comfortably. They beat madrid and Juve comfortably. Only in the semi were they under any real threat. , and even then it was hardly backs to the wall stuff..
I do think they were more poxed to finish ahead of spurs in fourth though.

In response to the claim that Arsenal are poxed to be in the C/L final, that claim is a bit mad really. They did well in their group, knocked out Spain's second team, beat Italy's top team and knocked out an in-form Villareal. In doing so they have compiled a European record 8 or 9 straight clean sheets. While they have at times been horrendous in the Premier League they have for the most part played excellently in the Champions League. You can't say a team doesn't deserve to be in the Final of a European competition based on their domestic form. Arsenal have played very differently in the two competitions.
As for the claim that West Ham and Tottenham have the biggest rivalry in English football i think that's a bit mad. While i am not disputing that a large rivalry may exist between the clubs, it's hardly Man U V's Liverpool or Man U V's Arsenal (in the Wenger era). I don't even think you could say it's Birmingham Villa, Liverpool Everton, Sunderland Newcastle, Man U Man City or dare i say Portsmouth Southampton. For starters players have moved between the two clubs regularly on numerous occasions in recent years without too much of a fuss. Compare that to Sol Campbell's situation or the fact that players never go between Liverpool and Man Utd. Also, Liam referred to "the firms" and places being smashed up as evidence of the rivalry. Are the actions of "the firms" of the two clubs truly represntative of the views and opinions of the vast majority of West Ham and Tottenham supporters? Sad if they are. From all i've read, the firms seem to have feuds based more so on firm feuding/fighting rivalry than club/football rivalry (I have read numerous books etc. on it and that's what i took from them anyway). Regardless of how many bars are smashed up and what not, i can't take the claim that WHU V's TH is the biggest rivalry in English Footbal too seriously, when one side are more preoccupied with another rival, they have done business regularly in the recent past and the rivalry isn't even hyped to a great extent in the British media. -AmadeusDC-

Not a mention of the cup final apart from Ham's (I'm surprised at you losing the head Ham. Spurs weren't good enough over the season and West Ham would consider Spurs to be THEIR biggest rivals but NOT vice versa) ravings.
Anyway back to the cup final. I couldn't give a shit about what the Hammers fans did yesterday. I want West Ham to win on saturday because I'm a neutral but also because I have great admiration for the manager and players. I don't have any particular contempt for Liverpool but they've had enough glory. C'mon the underdog!

Not to Mention Everton/Liverpool, Arsenal/Spurs, Newcastle /Sunderland etc...

Really? Was it not you who said:
'youobviously don't know the rivalry between tottenham and west ham, its by far the biggest london rivalry if not the biggest in the english league' or are we all imagining it?
No experience of day to day footie eh? While living in the UK I went to see Liverpool play Chelsea, Arsenal, Charlton and City away and Man U and Pompey at home. I got to more games in London as I had to live in that shithole Reading. What made said shithole more bearable was going to the odd Reading game. I couldn't get a ticket to the Merseyside derby but I've been to the Pool V Utd game four times- 2 home and 2 away. I got the tickets for each home game through the supporters club in Brannigans. I paid touts for the away game tickets and was in the wrong end for the City and Charlton games. With this in mind your contention that I dont know what I'm talking about doesn't really stand up.
Now there is no-one said that the West Ham V Spurs rivalry wasn't a big one. And measuring something like this is ephemeral at best- but please spare me yerself and John's condescending tones when there is no basis for them.

You can read the post above to Liam about the games I went to etc while living in the UK. People from Ireland banging on about English football rivalries is pretty ridiculous. As well as this, the only way to compare say Spurs V Hammers or, my contention for the biggest rivalry in English footie, Liverpool V Man U would be to go to both- home and away. Experiencing it in the cosy confines of your home stadium with a huge majority favouring your team is a far cry from a dodgy away trip when you have no idea what you are doing and the away fans just think you are a wool.
I have never been to both. I have never been to Cardiff V Swansea or Milwall V anyone! As Irish people our 'experience' is pretty limited to a handful of games and what we read on sites, in the media or in fanzines. Incidents at higher profile games will probably garner more attention and colour views. There is also the issue of everyone thinking their team has the fiercest rivalry. What about traditional geographical rivalries versus newer rivalries as a result of league results etc?
Anyway our judgement of these things is pretty sketchy but living over there and, especially, going to some away games was pretty instructive. All I can do is go by what I have experienced and what I've seen. Therefore I reckon Utd V Liverpool to be the fiercest and most vicious. It remained so even when league results were not there to justify it on both sides. Their historical, economic and cultural rivalry would have manifested itself in some other way even without the football teams.
Someone else could say any other two teams and I couldn't empirically say they were wrong. On the other hand, I dont have to follow you into the jacks to know that you shit does not taste of marmalade.

Does anybody actually want to give their opinion on the cup final? I think West Ham have a great chance if they don't get swallowed up by nerves. Mullins will be a bit of a loss but there's cover for him. I suppose Ashton will start (How's his injury?) but I hope West Ham can resist the urge to go route one too early. If Benayoun can get on the ball he can really do some damage.
What about Liverpool? Cisse must be in with a chance of starting up front. He's been banging in the goals lately and his pace could hurt the Hammers ' youthful defence. If Liverpool don't go with some pacy attackers it could play right into West Ham's hands.

Have to say I was impressed with the hammers on sunday, they played good football and they definitely won;t be a walkover for Liverpool. It should be a close game, but I still think Liverpool have that little bit extra and should win by the odd goal. possibly 2-1.

West Ham have a lot of speed and mobility around the field, which tends to bother Liverpool a bit, Liverpool aren't the fastest side around. Still though, you'd expect Liverpool to dominate in the middle. Hope to God that Benitez plays 2 strikers, or we're in for a borefest with Liverpool controlling the ball but not being able to create genuine chances. Morientes and Cisse would be my choice. Hope Alan Pardue doesn't overthink it as well plays an attacking shape rather than trying to do what West Ham aren't very good at by trying to contain Liverpool. West Ham are at their best pouring forward, and in big games I always say to go with what you're good at and hope its enough.

I've really enjoyed watching the Hammers this season. They have some raw young talent and are bristling with attaking intent most of the time. I think Gabbidon and Anton are really well suited to each other. Benayoun seems to be finding his feet as well. They're set up to upset the odds. If they are to beat Liverpool it'll be the same old story of trying to break Pool's domination of midfield- if they can then they have the pace up front to trouble a slow central defense. The abject loss to Chelsea was troubling though as Liverpool are a similar team to Chelsea.
