Liverpool have given themselves a great chance of FA Youth Cup success after a 3-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg at Anfield.
The Merseyside club were in control for the majority of the first half and take a lead back to Eastlands on April 21 thanks to goals from Robbie Threlfall, Ryan Flynn and Miki Roque.
Liverpool were much the better side in the opening exchanges of the game and striker Paul Anderson was a livewire up front.
The Reds were ahead inside 20 minutes when Threlfall poked home from a corner after mis-timing his original header.
Anderson then had a deflected effort go just wide of Lawrence Matthewson's post before City's best chance of the half was spurned by Kelvin Etuhu, who shot straight at David Roberts from 12 yards.
Flynn added a second for Liverpool on 32 minutes to put the hosts in total command of the tie. Anderson picked up the ball on the right and laid it off for Flynn to fire a shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.
City pushed for a goal in the second half and had numerous opportunities to pull one back.
Danny Sturridge rattled a post while Roberts kept out Ashley Williams with a fine stop before City's best chance to get on the scoresheet.
Chaos from a corner saw Godwin Antwi twice clear off the line before the ball fell to the feet of Etuhu who, from in front of goal, scuffed his shot, allowing Roberts to make the save.
Man of the match Anderson almost added a third for Liverpool with a superb overhead kick that crashed back off the crossbar but Roque showed him how to find the back of the net with a late header that will have been a huge blow to City who had played much better in the second half.

watched this last night, the player that stood out was andeson, his technique and pace are excellent. Could be get a run out with the first team next year. seems very similar to micky owen. heard a few good things about adam hammil as well, however on last nights performance i don't think he will make it.

You can never judge young fellas on one game though.
Even now when Rooney and Ronaldo have off days you tend to forget that they are still only learning.
At youths level you'd need to watch a lot more of them to make a judgement.

I agree, but sometimes you see a player who stands out, I think anderson stands out at this level. should be interesting to see if he can step up to the next

Agreed there - what I meant was bad performances.
At this level they aren't consistent at all in general and tis hard pass judgement on a fella who played bad if you haven't seen him before.

They should have no bother with that City team. They knocked out the Utd youngsters in one of the biggest travesties I've seen all year, complete robbery of a result. I think I remember seeing a few of them playing for Pool reserves against our lot earlier this year and they were very like the Pool first team, well-organised, good from set pieces, handy on the ball. Don't remember anyone standing out in the forwards though, defenders maybe.
