Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres could be in line for a move to Arsenal this summer.

The Spaniard's future has been the source of fervent speculation since January, when it emerged that Atletico would consider offers for their top scorer.

Several top clubs across the continent have expressed an interest in the 22-year-old, with Newcastle reportedly eyeing him up as a replacement for Alan Shearer.

Tottenham and Chelsea are also believed to be keeping track of Torres' progress, but Arsenal now appear to be the frontrunners.

Gunners star Jose Antonio Reyes, who plays alongside Torres for Spain, has urged coach Arsene Wenger to bring his compatriot to Highbury.

Arsenal will probably be looking to buy one or two world class players this summer after a disappointing Premiership campaign, and Wenger is likely to have a considerable amount of money at his disposal whether or not his team win the UEFA Champions League.

"Torres is already one of the best strikers in the world and when Arsene Wenger asked me about him I said he would be a great player for Arsenal," said Reyes.

"He is very important for Atletico and Spain and would have no problems adapting to England.

"I would be delighted if he joins Arsenal."

It has been strongly rumoured that Liverpool have had preliminary talks with Torres' people. I can see this story running & running over the summer. If a great young talent like Torres becomes available there's bound to be interest from many teams across Europe. I think Rafa does rate him but it'll take our rumoured cash injection to be finalised before we can come near to being able to affording him

if he has a good world cup then there will be even more talk about him. He would be a terrific addition to any side
