Sundin keeps hope alive

Leafs 6 Panthers 5 (OT): Two points plus Tampa Bay's loss mean it's not over

CAPTAIN DRAWS FOUR OF A KIND V. PANTHERS
Mats Sundin was a man among boys last night as he scored four goals and assisted on the other two in Toronto's 6-5 overtime victory over the Florida Panthers at the Air Canada Centre.

TORONTO - With huge thanks owing to Mats Sundin, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. can hold fans' post-season ticket deposits another day.

In a performance that -- if the Toronto Maple Leafs somehow complete their late season scramble for the playoffs -- will go down in team history, Toronto's captain scored four goals and assisted on two others in a 6-5 overtime win over the Florida Panthers.

Just 11 seconds from the shootouts that have been a bugaboo for Toronto all season, Tomas Kaberle's power-play goal gave Toronto a win. It was the team's eighth straight game earning at least a point.

Seven years and a day after Steve Sullivan notched the last four-goal game in Leaf history, Sundin's six-point night negated a hat trick by former Leaf Joe Nieuwendyk that nearly carried Florida to a win.

Sundin, whose leadership skills are sometimes questioned, said he made no promises to carry his team to victory in what was very close to a must-win game.

"Sports doesn't happen that way, I think, any more," he said. "I wish I said before the game that I was going to go out and score four goals."

Now with eight goals and nine assists in the past eight games, Sundin tried to downplay his impact last night.

"There's probably nights this year where I've played better hockey," he said. "Tonight you had a night where, hey, I played a good game, but the puck seems to follow you, every shot you take it goes in the net and you have good screens and that's sports."

Other Leafs disagreed.
"It's one of the single best performances I've seen an individual make," said winger Darcy Tucker, whom Sundin almost knocked to the ice while celebrating his first goal of the night.

"He's been the leader on and off the ice since I've been here," said Kaberle. "He might be the greatest player in the whole league since the Olympics."

Coach Pat Quinn, who entered the game facing a season without playoffs for the first time in his tenure as Maple Leafs coach, was also impressed.

"It was quite a performance for sure," Quinn said. "For the last while he's been a step up. I guess he has high standards anyway, but the kind of game like tonight, he was all over. He wanted the puck, he got it in some good spots, he finished off well, won faceoffs, killed penalties. He did everything."

The game was a microcosm of the Maple Leafs' roller-coaster season. They fell behind 2-0, tied the score three times, went ahead, gave up the lead and weathered minor penalties at 17:58 of the third period and 1:30 into overtime.

Starting his eighth straight game for Toronto, J.S. Aubin was not as spectacular as he has been at times in the seven previous games, though most of Florida's goals were the result of defensive breakdowns.

"I can't explain the mistakes on the rush, we just totally missed it, it was misread on everyone," said Quinn. "On the first one, poor read and our forward got caught too deep and our defencemen didn't read it right. The second one, third one and fourth one were all just really bad missed assignments."

But Toronto also cracked the 40-shot plateau for the first time this season, outshooting the Panthers 53-26 on the night.

"Except for those mistakes that cost a goal nearly every time, we didn't give them very much and we generated probably our best night of the season, maybe, for scoring opportunities and shots as well so there were a lot of good things in it," Quinn said. "Maybe that is the microcosm of our season. Lots of good stuff and mistakes we paid dearly for."

The result kept Toronto in position, if barely so, to catch a Tampa Bay team that Atlanta demolished 6-2 last night. The Leafs also retained an outside chance of overtaking seventh-place Montreal.

A loss would have put Toronto hopelessly in arrears of the Canadiens, while a loss combined with Tampa Bay earning even a single point would have officially left the Maple Leafs free to book tee times for a week from today.

According to Tucker at least, until the math no longer allows them to think of the playoffs, the Leafs will believe they can sneak in to the post-season.

"I know it's stupid, but we're just playing," he said. "There's opportunity. We've just got to keep winning. That's all there is to it."

Some performance alright. They still have 2 and a half games to make up. And it's not like they're the only team going for it. It's really tight.

The weird thing is that a lot of leaf fans here don't actually want them to make the playoffs, so that there can be a big upheaval.

Personally i think Tampa and Montreal will just about hold on for the final places.. Although if Buffalo beat the Habs tonight then who knows.

Well actually Montreal are more or less through. Apparently they only need a point out of their last 4

Heres what has to happen accordin to the box just now.

Toronto must win their remaining 4 games and hope that Tampa lose 2 out of their 3 and for Atlanta to lose 1 out of 2 in regulation time.

Not imposssible but.........

Stajan sends Leafs to victory
April 13, 2006

.

Matt Stajan scored his second goal of the game with 1:08 left in overtime to give Toronto an important 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night. Afterwards, Quinn was asked if his team would be the hottest team to miss the playoffs.

"Don't even think about that part," Quinn said. "We're going to make it."

Stajan came around the net, fought off two checks and sent a backhandedr from the high slot between the pads of a screened Garth Snow to bring the Leafs to within three points of eighth-place Tampa Bay. Both teams have three games left.

"Darce (Darcy Tucker) did a good job of cycling down low," Stajan said. "I went around and was able to get in front, and I tried my tricky backhand and it went into the net.

"Anytime you score an overtime goal in the NHL, it's exciting. It probably was my biggest game in the league."

Tucker and Mats Sundin also scored for Toronto. Jean-Sebastien Aubin stopped 23 shots for the Leafs. Aubin is 7-0-2 since taking over in the nets.

"Even when he bends, he doesn't break," Tucker said of Aubin. "He just gets us two points every time."

Robert Nilsson, Trent Hunter and Shawn Bates scored for the Islanders, while Snow made 27 saves. He is now winless in his last 12 appearances in net, 10 of them starts.

The loss was the first at home for New York against Toronto in the last four meetings.

Aubin made two huge saves in the first minute of the game. He stopped Miroslav Satan with a diving stick save at the left post on a wraparound attempt at 32 seconds, and 12 seconds later he raised his left leg at the knee while on his belly to get a pad on a Shawn Bates try.

"That was my scorpion save," Aubin said of the save on Bates. "Actually, it was Alex Steen that gave it that name.

"I did that once in practice, and he came up with that."

Tucker opened the scoring 2:04 into the game. Snow missed the puck as it went behind the net. Steen grabbed it and passed it out front, where Tucker poked it home.

The Islanders tied the game with 21.8 seconds left in the period. Jason Blake's breakaway attempt hit the left post, but slid under Aubin across to Nilsson, who spun around and whipped a wrist shot into the open right side.

Hunter put the Islanders up 2-1 at 12:27 of the second period. On a give-and-go off the left wall, Hunter faked a pass to Bates and lifted the puck under the crossbar.

The Leafs appeared to have tied it 2:04 later when Stajan buried the puck during a scramble, but the goal was waved off due to a referee's whistle.

Sundin tied it legally with a power-play goal with 2:13 left in the period. He was open in the left circle and snapped Nik Antropov's cross-ice pass high to the short side.

Stajan put the Leafs up 3-2 early in the final period. On a rush, Stajan found himself streaking up the middle alone, and he took Jeff ONeill's pass and beat Snow with a snap shot. It was Stajan's 13th goal, and came at 4:35.

Bates tied it 3-3 at 10:54 on a back-door tap-in off Miroslav Satan's second assist of the game.

But fuck, theres a chance?

TORONTO) -- The Maple Leafs team that had gelled so much over the past 10 games, watched together in shock and disappointment as Martin St. Louis ended their season over 2000 kilometres away in Tampa Bay.

The NHL's previous MVP scored with just 10 seconds left in overtime to earn a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes and eliminated the Blue and White from playoff contention.

It wasn't the way the team wanted their post-season hopes to end.

In many ways it might have been easier if Toronto hadn't beat the Ottawa Senators 5-1 on Saturday night. At least it would have been as a result of something they couldn't accomplish, but to lose out on a chance at the Stanley Cup with absolutely no control seemed more difficult.

"Obviously you want to be able to control your own destiny," said Darcy Tucker. "It seems like it is all for naught right now. We just had too many games to make up in too few games."

The Lightning now have 92 points and 43 wins. Toronto can reach the 92-point plateau with victories in its final two games, but only gaining 42 wins in the process and therefore would lose the tie-breaker.

"We did everything we needed to do but we didn't get any help from anyone," said J.S. Aubin, who is still undefeated as the Leafs netminder.

Head coach Pat Quinn was disappointed in the results but had praise for his youth-injected team.

"Our guys did a heck of a job, but the other teams did a good job too," said Pat Quinn. "I'm proud of how they handled themselves down the stretch. We we're the makers of our own destiny. Our guys learned some things about themselves. Lots of these kids have made great strides in the last three weeks."

The veteran benchboss wanted some time to truely access what went wrong with this team, but when cornered he pointed at the long losing stretch they suffered starting on Saturday, January 14th. Toronto was up 4-0 nothing on a weak Phoenix Coyote team but a complete implosion resulted in 4-3 loss and started a seven-game winless skid.

Things didn't get much better after a slow start back after the Olympic break, but after injuries to Jason Allison, Ed Belfour, Alexei Khavanhov opened up spots for some of the kids to play more and suddenly the team wasn't making as many ghastly errors.

As a result, Aubin earned a new one-year contract with his stellar play. Matt Stajan has been on fire since moving to centre. Alex Steen has been just as good and they seemed to bring Jeff O'Neill out of his poor play, which had made him a healthy scratch more this year than in any other. Kyle Wellwood continues to gain confidence. Ian White has been a solid contributor on the blueline.

It all comes back to the Captain though and he did everything possible to get his team into the playoffs. Sundin likes the way the kids are playing even though it wasn't enough.

"What do you say. It's a tough way to be out of the playoffs," said Sundin. "I'm proud of our team. I'm proud of our young guys. The future looks good, I think, for this team."

NHL playoff matchups confirmed

Eastern Coference

(1)Ottawa v ( 8 )Tampa Bay
(2)Carolina v (7)Montreal
(3)New Jersey v (6)NY Rangers
(4)Buffalo v (5)Philadelphia

Western Conference

(1)Detroit v ( 8 )Edmonton
(2)Dallas v (7)Colorado
(3)Calgary v (6)Anaheim
(4)Nashville v (5)San Jose

Gonna go out on a limb and predict that San Jose will go all the way and take the Stanley Cup. They're the form team at the moment and in Joe Thornton they have the best player in the League.

In the East , I think NY Rangers are a lot better than their 6th seeds suggest.
But Ottawa will probably be too strong in that draw.

Forsberg
04-05-2006, 06:24 AM
So the Conference semi finals are set. Completely contrasting outcomes between the East and west. The 4 top seeds from the East are through , whereas the top 4 from the west wee knocked out. Only one of these was a huge surprise though. that being Dallas getting beaten by Colorado.

San Jose looking like the team to beat in the West. WBut the most impressive team by far in the Quarters were New jersey, who swept the NY Rangers. Still can't see them overcoming Ottawa though even with the greatest ever playoff goalie in Brodeur.

Still tipping San Jose v Ottawa final with san Jose to take it

East

Ottawa (1) v (4) Buffalo
Carolina (2) v (3) New Jersey

West

Edmonton ( 8 ) v (5) San Jose
Colorado (7) v (6)Anaheim
