Newcastle United defender Jean-Alain Boumsong has reportedly become a target for former club Rangers.

Some inconsistent performances this term have seen the Frenchman lose his starting place at St James' Park with speculation increasing about a possible move away from the North East.

New Gers boss Paul Le Guen is already on the lookout for players to improve his squad in the summer and is thought to have met with Boumsong about a possible move back north of the border.

The lack of playing time under Glenn Roeder could also cost the powerful centre back a place in France's World Cup starting line-up in Germany.

French national team coach Raymond Domenech is becoming increasingly worried by the lack of action for Boumsong and could turn to Chelsea defender William Gallas to partner Lilian Thuram in the heart of Les Bleus' defence.

Meanwhile, Roma's Philippe Mexes and Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre have both brought themselves back into Domenech's plans for the World Cup after some impressive displays for their club teams of late.

I was in Newcastle at the weekend. Decent city to go out in but if you've seen one English City( bar London) you've seen them all. Full of chain pubs and themed restaurants. It's all Soccer AM culture. And the thing about them wearing no jackets etc is absolutely true. It was fucking snowing on Saturday and the girls were out in half nothing- how bad.

Good for a weekend but you wouldn't want to live there IMO.

Analysis is fairly spot on there Sound - especially the jackets. It's fantastic though as they go out there in half nothing and the talent is amazing there.

As for Bousong - will Newcastle recoup much of the money I wonder or is it a similar situation to Barry Ferguson's at Blackburn?

Barry Ferguson running back to Rangers with his tail between his legs was as unedifying as it was funny.

'Och, bigger boys came and kicked me!'.

And for free!

One thing David Murray does well is get the Beast (Souness) to buy all his players at an extremely inflated price. Well done him.

I would respectfully challenge that view and put forward Oxford, Bath and Chester as just three examples of evidence.

Not to mention Winchester or Canterbury although they are probably more like towns.

I'd say Rangers should get Boumsong for something like the cost of a cheeseburger, salt optional,if the price is performance related

I've only had the pleasure of going to Bath and it is beautiful. I had it down as a town though because it's so picturesque. Fair point.

There's a worrying trend of, whats called, the 'Manchesterisation' of towns. Basically you have multiples of English shops etc opening all over Cork and Dublin threatening to make them look ljust like English towns.

Hasn't really worked out since he's gone back either. Definitely a shell of the player he was. I think he would have been a very good player if he'd been used under Hughes. Breaking your kneecap isn't nice and then to have the monkey on your back of Souness being your boss - Christ above.
