I'd rank the nominees in the following order (domestic form only)
1. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
2. Wayne Rooney (Man United)
3. John Terry (Chelsea)
4. Thierry Henry (Arsenal)
5. Joe Cole (Chelsea)
6. Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
Both Cole & Lampard sparkled for periods but had periods where they were less than effective. IMHO only Gerrard & Rooney (and possibly Terry) sustained a high level of performance across the whole season (to date) & are the only viable options for top spot.

I agree.
Think Makelele is unlucky not to be in there, but thats the bias toward English players again for you.
Rooney for me but I'm biased.

Rooney is also up for young player.
If he doesn't win the senior gong he is a certainty for that.
Can he win both?
Ronaldo and Fabregas are also nominated.
Cesc's league form will count against him though, he hasn't been consistent enough to get it.
Roman Abramovich

1. wayne rooney
2. momo sissoko
3. morsten gamst pederson

7. lehmann
8. nolan
9. chimbonda
10. thierry henry

I'd certainyl have John Terry ahead of Lampard.
And if you are going to include Chimbonda the Neville and Finnan deserve mention.
Ronaldo's second half of season form has been inspiring as well.
Giggs too.
Over the course of the whole season Nolan and Pedersen have been good for their respective clubs but they wouldn't be judged as harshly as some of the bigger players when their clubs have off days.
Ditto Chimbonda.

Sissoko should be there or thereabouts for young player of the year (obviously not ahead of fat boy though). To come to a new country and impose himself so much on games is very impressive. Despite not even playing a full season with Liverpool yet people actually comment on what is lacking in the team when he's not playing. Great prospect.

Excellent.
Should have got a nomination for young player in fairness.
Certainly better than Fabregas in the league this season.
Rooney to win both awards.

The Ronaldinho comment was a joke lad, there's no way he'd displace little Luis Garcia ;-)
Re: Sissoko - for a 20 year old to come from Spain and make such an impression (and get so much on-pitch time at a club who have Hamann, Gerrard & Alonso in his position) in his first year merits recognition.
Admittedly he is a bit raw but he has put in some great performances so far & has been our best player in many games this season.
He'd be a great midfield partner for Fabregas I think, he is every but as mobile as Cesc but is a far more effective at tackling & putting players under pressure...even Didi Hamann said that Momo had very little to learn from him as he's a top player already.
MonTheHoops - I'm not convinced about Kewell at left mid, maybe tweak that a bit & you'll be about right ;-)
On a serious note I do think that Reina, Finnan, Carragher & Gerrard are up there with anyone in terms of their performance in their relative positions this season.

Couldn't really disagree with that. Not too many keepers outside the top 4 sides anyway that would stake a claim.

True but you ain't gonna get 3 players out of 11 when you come 3rd.
I think Saha & Ruud have done as well as most strikers and Neville and Rio have been in decent form since Christmas with Giggsy as good as any creative midfield player since we hit form.
But I'd say Rooney will be our only player on team of the season even though we could still win the league.
Lampard and Gerrard are certainties in midfield. As is cole.
So you are only filling one player in there. The strikeforce is picked.
I dunno who will get left back.
They might accomodate Carragher there with Rio alongside Terry.
Neville and Finnan is a toss up.
Even though Gallas and Makelele should be on the team you mightn't see them as it'll be dominated by English players.
Reina or Lehmann for goals.

its probably the first year in a while where there has been no outstanding player way out in front in terms of performance.Gerrard has sparkled for long periods this season but I'm surprised more people are not mentioning Alonso here.If fat frank deserves a nomination for half a years work, then surely Xabi should be in with a shout?
Rooney obviously will be up there, Henry's top scorer though so can't be discounted, even if he has been a bit inconsistent

Ruud is tied with him and he isn't even in the reckoning.
Alonso and Makelele have been better than Lampard in my books.
But then again they ain't English

I can't believe Makelele wasn't even nominated. Lampard played superb for 1/2 a season and then dropped off. Cole is always hit and miss. Makelele is consistent as they come and though it is hard to look spectacular in his role, watching him get the job done week in and week out is amazing. -AmadeusDC-

i'd give it rooney or terry.

In most football fans eyes that'd probably be a huge compliment!!! hehe.
Roy Keane shite aside though, i'm always as impressed by what Makelele does when he hasn't got the ball as when he's on it. His reading of the game is incredible. He tracks runners through midfield all game long. He is able to anticipate what even the world's best players are going to do more often than any other player i've seen (it's not a coincidence that so many opposition attacks break down with a Makelele tackle or interception). He wins as many 50/50's as any player in his position and immediately gets the ball moving back the other way launching a counter attack. He gets caught in possession so rarely it's phenomenal. Yes, he lets other more traditionally gifted players do the spectacular things but that's not necessarily a bad thing. That's what you do when you've spent your career surrounded by Zidane, Figo, Lampard, Robben etc. I also don't know if anyone else noticed how good he was against Barca over the two legs this year. One of the only Chelsea players who genuinely looked like he deserved to be on the same pitch in the away leg. Anyway, i'm obviously speaking personally, but I'd have a player with all the aforementioned qualities in my team every time.

Ronaldo has been better in the league than Fabregas.
He has been super after an acceptable (given the circumstances) early season slump.
And you have no Rooney in your young player either.
Thought Giggs might have been worth a shout for player of the year nomination.
His form since Christmas has been amazing.
It has included MOM against Liverpool and pissing all over Arsenal's midfield pairing last weekend.
Not to mention a crucial role in our winning run.

I only have no Rooney as he's up for the big one. Even though Ronaldo has been impressive lately I haven't got him in as this would have voted for lately. As for being better than Cesc, I dunno. Cesc has been bullied in lots of games but, IMO, he's had a consistently higher level than Ronaldo. Ronaldo has been good in spurts and absolutely awful in others.
As for Giggs- with all due respect that could be a blinkers issue. We're talking about player of the year here.

Ronaldo is nominated for young player and has been outstanding since Christmas. Fabregas wasn't bullied on Sunday - he was outplayed.
Rooney has to get the young one doesn't he? I mean none of the other 5 have been nominated for the top gong and he is. Which means he gets it by default surely.
Think Ronaldo has been just as good if not better in the league than Cesc but its a joke that Lennon is on that list and Momo isn't.

HENRY: GERRARD'S AN INSPIRATION
Paul Eaton 25 April 2006
Thierry Henry basked in the glory of Arsenal securing a place in the Champions League final - and immediately hailed Steven Gerrard as being an inspiration to everyone at Highbury.
Arsene Wenger's men will face either Barcelona or AC Milan in Paris next month after a goalless draw with Villareal saw them progress 1-0 on aggregate.
Speaking immediately after the match in Spain, the Arsenal skipper was keen to pay tribute to Gerrard and congratulate the Liverpool midfielder on being named PFA Player of the Year at the weekend.
"What Steven Gerrard did last year in the Champions League has been an inspiration to us all," said Henry.
"I am so pleased he has been named Player of the Year. It's been a long time coming for him. I have so much respect for the guy and I want to congratulate him."
