Stamping claim may see O'Driscoll miss semi-final
11/04/2006 - 14:46:08
Scottish side Border Reivers have referred their claim of an alleged stamping by Brian O’Driscoll to the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU).
The club are claiming the Leinster and Ireland centre committed an alleged stamp on Nikki Walker during last Friday night’s Celtic League match at Netherdale.
Reivers’ press officer, Stuart Martin this morning confirmed that any decision on whether or not to cite O’Driscoll will be taken by the SRU.
“We have referred the matter to the Scottish Rugby Union and they have until 5pm today to make the decision on whether or not to cite the player involved,” said Martin.
If O’Driscoll is cited he could miss the Heineken Cup semi-final clash with Munster at Lansdowne Road on April 23.
This would represent a blow to Leinster as O’Driscoll’s partnership with Gordon Darcy is one that will have the Munster camp worried.
Leinster won the game against Border Reivers as their preparations for the Lansdowne Road tie intensify.
Munster have their final run-out before that big clash when they host Edinburgh in the Celtic League at Thomond Park on Saturday (7.30pm).
Of great interest in that game will be the centre partnership that Munster opt for given the continued absence of the injured Barry Murphy.
Tomas O’Leary has started Munster’s last two games at 13 but Mike Mullins along with Rob Henderson will be in the frame for the semi-final clash.

on another note BOD should be getting into this position after every second match - he whinged and moaned constantly about the Umanga spear tackle yet he is constantly stamping, anyone remember the Italy match? the italian hooker despite the fact that he was about three/four foot behind the ruck and clear could be stepped over and then later bergamasco, all to many times he is doing it these days, as captain of ireland he need to be more disciplined

True.
I'll stand by my point that Paul O'Connell should be Irish captain. Outside centre is far too isolated a position to be captain.
I think the reason why BOD gets caught out is because he plays like a flanker at times. Most good flankers are a bottle of whiskey away from insane, the sort of guys who stick their head into a situation where most people wouldn't stick their feet.
BOD isn't afraid to ruck (not stamp, there's a major difference, mostly to do with the motion of the feet, back and forth vs straight up and down and proximity to the ball) and I personally think it's a good thing. If you're on the wrong side of the ruck, you deserve it. Sure the ref should be pulling them up for it, but sometimes it's hard to spot.
It's one of the main things that makes him a great player, it's like having another flanker in the backs, tidying up crap ball...

Sure they might rest him for the semi anyway to keep him fresh for the final,
playing Horgan centre and Kearney on the wing wouldn't de-value the teams strength much.
In fairness, the bodmeister gets really stuck in, my abiding memory of Rog in every game, is of him on the ground, red cheeks, arms flailing trying to catch a lads ankle as he runs off away from him

Anyway, back to the rugby, Personally i'm bricking it on the defence against the Leinster backline, horgan is playing brilliant stuff, and I could just see him brushing Dowling off on the way to the tryline.
i'd say Munster will just have to keep it as an up-the-jumper game...

Not to mention the fact that Cullen is out of the Edinburgh match, which means it'd be madness to put him in the team against Leinster.
The Munster backs for Edinburgh:
Peter Stringer, Paul Burke, Thomas O'Leary, Mike Prendergast, Mossie Lawlor, Anthony Horgan, Ian Dowling, Rob Henderson, Trevor Halstead, Mike Mullins, John Kelly, Sean Payne.
So the backline against Leinster probably will be:
Stringer, ROG, Dowling, Halstead, O'Leary, Kelly and Payne.
Quite a few weak links there to be honest. Kelly isn't a top winger by any stretch of the imagination. Tomás O'Leary is possibly a better winger, but his defence isn't exactly outstanding... Payne is good, but not going to set the world alight. Would have Dempsey every time. ROG V Conteponi is an interesting contrast, if Conteponi turns up for the game, he's the better player, if not, ROG is a far, far better player.
There''s a number of players there that should have retired already, Mullins, Henderson, and a few player who will probably never make it.

You do Kelly a diservice boss. I can't remember the last time he let Munster down. This won't be the time either. Payne has been Munster's most consitently good back for the past two-three seasons. Whilst Dempsey's form this year has been very good for Leinster, I'd go with Payne, he is solid as a brick wall. TOL will be a fine back for Munster once they stop the fucking around and just decide on where they want him to play! Mossie Lawlor and Jeremy Staunton have suffered from this bollickology in the past. He would be a worry for the 23rd though
Barring disaster the back line for the SF wil be much as you describe it, the question mark will be where in it TOL plays, 14 or 13? Mullins came on against NGD and he was nowhere near to match fit

John Kelly is solid, nothing more. I seriously doubt any team have ever thought "Oh shit, they've got John Kelly". Whereas you could say that about the majority of the Leinster backline. He just doesn't have out and out pace or quick feet, which is what wing is all about really. He is pretty much incapable of beating a decent winger one on one.
Solid is fine, but Leinster have solidity, combined with a creative flair that Munster lack. Previously they didn't have this solidity as a team, grasping defeat from the jaws of victory...

Again, I think you underestimate Kelly. You look at the list of vital Munster tries over the years and one J. Kelly pops up with amazing regularity. Sure, he doesn't have buckets of pace but what he does have which not many players do is a genuine ability to a) read a game and b) cut his cloth to suit his purpose. The man knows that most of the time he won't have the beating of an opposition winger for pace (although seeing him run rings around Rob Kearney in Musgrave last year was truly wonderful) so he'll run the best line he can to make ground and bring the support players into the game. He very rarely gets ioslated or turned, recycles well and will not let you down in defence. He gives his all every single time and you can bet your bottom dollar that he is one of the first names down on DKs teamsheet
