Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has launched a surprising attack on his own team-mates, blaming a lack of hunger for their elimination from the UEFA Champions League.
Drogba claims that last year's squad were more clinical than this season's crop and has cast aspersions over some of Jose Mourinho's recent signings.
Ten-man Blues' 4-1 win over West Ham on Sunday did much to dispel doubts over Chelsea's title endurance but evidently the victory has not been enough to appease their disgruntled Ivory Coast front-man.
"Our squad last season was mentally tougher - we let go of nothing," Drogba told The Sun.
"We were like famished players. That is no longer the case this year.
"Certain players have left us who had the quality of winners.
"Others have arrived with different qualities but ones which are not enough to see things through."
While Chelsea remain on course to retain their Premiership title, Drogba claims the club's exit from the Champions League underlined the team's shortcomings.
"The Champions League remains a cup," added Drogba.
"You must not be afraid to take risks. You have to compete 100 percent and that was not the case this time. We weren't at a level to see things through."

Its amazing how your stock can fall due to these moves.
Parker the same.
They were being touted for the big clubs like United, Arsenal and Liverpool and end up seeing the money and bright lights at Chelsea for a bigger sign on fee and end up at Newcastle or somewhere similar.
SWP could have went to Liverpool or Arsenal last year but he will probably not earn a move to these clubs now.

i'm sure if mark gonzalez wasn't due at anfield this summer, liverpool would try and take swp, but at max half the price chelsea paid for him. he's still a great player. but chelsea won't sell to one of their nearest rivals, they'd rather he rot in the reserves than try and recoup the money + wages. oh well... the premierships and englands loss i reckon

using the term a little loosely there.

There have been whispers of discontent around the signing of Del Horno, perhaps this outburst from the donkey is aimed at him as much as SWP?
I can't see what he's pining for in the players they let go. None of whom made much of a contribution at Chelsea and all of which were replaced by better players (either in the squad at the time or bought since)
Chelsea's transfers in 2005/2006
Players in
Asier Del Horno
Scott Sinclair
Lassana Diarra
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Michael Essien
Players out
Juan Veron
Mateja Kezman
Tiago
Steven Watt
Alexei Smertin

Remember when Robbie Keane went to Italy, the same thing nearly happened him. Apparently he did really well out of all his signing on fees though, but he was lucky. He's doing well now, but it could have all gone wrong and he could have ended up back at Wolves or Coventry. I think you're right about SWP. Sometimes the price tag becomes a millstone.

Robbie Keane was very very popular with the Inter fans and even the owner. He just wasn't the big name compared with some of the others they had up front at the time so he was never going to get a game. It would have been pretty cool if he had been a success over there but he's not doing half bad at Tottenham these days. -AmadeusDC-

Inter were rumoured to be looking to sign him back again before Tottenham extended his contract.
He owns a load of aprtments in Citywest in Dublin, and other areas too, so I'd say he invested his signing on fees wisely.
