View Full Version : The Premiership title run-in
7 points in it, 5 games to play. United of course would still have to win all their remaining games. (3 at home, 2 in London at grounds where they have good records)
This is how I see it..
..for it to happen United would have to reduce the gap to 5 points (4 points to rule out goal diffence) with 2 games remaining.
Then should United win at the Bridge in penultimate game to reduce to 2 points, on the last day United would have to win at home to Charlton and hope Chelsea don't win away to Newcastle.
So, in the next 3 fixtures I see it that United need to gain a minimum 2 points. This is not unlikely...
United have: Sunderland H, Spurs A, Middlesboro H,
Chelsea have: Bolton A, Everton H, Blackburn A,
Chelsea have a goal difference advantage of 8 after West Ham, so United really need to win big at home to either Sunderland or Boro or else win by a couple at the Bridge to eliminate that.
...and on my Sunday stroll on the Thames near Fulham I did notice 12 dead swans, 27 dead ducks, and a dozen mallards with a serious dose of the gawks...
[dream sequence]..I can see it now, ...Shearer, after spurning United twice, wins the league for United last day with a storming penalty down the middle to draw 1-1[/dream sequence]

I think both teams will take 7 points from these games and Chelsea won't be beaten in the big game at the bridge.

mmm, well if United don't pick up 9, then goodnight, ..Spurs will be going for the win which will help, and United have a good record at the lane. That leaves Chelsea getting 2 wins and a draw to still leave game on, although I think they may drop in 2 games, perhaps even v Everton. ..and they've only 1 win in their last 6 or 7 away.

when people talk of his career, i prefer to concentrate on what he prevented rather than what he won. he single handedly won the 95 premiership and also in a way stopped united winning at least 2 more titles and 2 champions leagues that they would have won had he joined them.
can you imagine if united had won 7 or 8 in a row with maybe 3 CL's? have no doubt that this WOULD have happened.
it would have given them a cast iron claim to have been the greatest team ever seen in english football.
thanks Al, truly the King of Kings

To be fair, the SAS was Shearer and Sutton, not Shearer and Shearer.
I think Sutton and Batty had a fair hand in that title too.

I honestly think that after the win over Wet Spam at the weekend, Chelsea will beat Bolton and Everton and United will win their 2 games and there will still be 7 points in it as United visit the Bridge. I think that game will be a 2-2 draw which will be enough for the Blues to win the title. Win the title at home to United, what a script!

obviously there's no such thing as a one man team, but shearer was that team.
keane and shearer are regarded as the 2 best players in the history of the premiership. can you imagine how things would have panned out had they ended up at opposite clubs. united would have conquered all round, blackburn might have got a uefa cup run, and keane would be regarded as merely another gary speed type figure
