11-05-2009, 11:23 AM
The hack was a remote/novelty controlled web browser. We had a mobile
phone app that did some image recognition on the phones camera and
based on the result instructed the browser on the other machine to
visit a url. We had a scooter with a Wiimote strapped to it that scrolled the page up/down when you rode it up/down a ramp (that was my bit) and a Lego robot that pressed the keyboard when you hit a bongo drum to make the
browser go back.
Must say, considering it was a hardcore geek fest, I really enjoyed it and it was great to program again.

We controlled the browser (FF) using Selenium. Basically, we had several input devices that sent requests to our service and then controlled actions on the browser. The tough bit was (for me anyway) figuring out when a Wiimote was going up or down so I could send a scroll up or scroll down request. Totally useless but was lots of fun and got a big cheer. Some really smart stuff there including a band that mixed music on a Game Boy and an iPhone orchestra.

Ah right - so you didn't actually exploit FF? Selenium as a proxy provides all the hooks to control it? Is this true? Sounds really cool - have you got a demo somewhere?

There was a guy who I always remember having a Casio data-watch in school (national school and secondary school).
Met him recently and he has an updated version of it.
The same guy still wears the same combo of sweatshirt and jeans that he used to wear in sixth class.
He's who I always think of to cheer myself up when I think my life is going nowhere.

Exactly, the BoBs don't use FB to communicate with each other. I use it for birds and checking birds pics to see if I want to see them again if I was hammied when I pulled them. The lads have just let their standards slip.

Yeah... FB seems like less of a chore tho.. plus people feel more accountable on it... e.g. if you 'like' something the status gets propogated to all your friends, so it's harder to pretend you miss mails innit?

The double posting is a PHP bug when using Safari that the admins wont bother their hole to fix.
Just a little widget that sits discreetly on your desktop allowing you to see who and what is posted. That way if you in work you dont have a big red page in front of you.

We never put merit on sun certified programmers in my last place. It meant squat. Being certified and actually doing it means fuck all. We laughed a few guys out of interviews and they were mostly certified. I'm not saying they don't have merit on a CV but experience is what counts.
In my line of work, using your spare time to keep up to date with open source libraries and new technologies has a lot of merit. Spare time on open source development counts as training. This is why I'm trying to think of a project.

I have a pair of classic aviators and a pair of Guess glasses that I never wear as they are rectangular and quite small and I prefer bigger sunnies now.
I strongly advise against wearing cheap sunglasses. Seriously. They damage your eyes and you'd be a lot better off wearing none. By wearing them you open your eyes a little wider and blink less as they form a shield. The cheap ones offer no protection via the lens and you actually do damage. I've had medical advice on this.
Just go out and spend 40/50 quid on a good pair. Or wear none and squint.

Also it's occurred to me that you should try Bodytonic as they love to talk music and have lots of mixes.
Currently listening to Steve live on the radio on Power FM.

Being persecuted again by recruitment agents. About 5 calls yesterday and 3 thus far this morning. Not a bad complaint at all.

Why do I feel like I have an allegiance to a one recruitment agent over another when they are vying for the same role?

Have had dealings with him once before and his company but they (so one says) are not approved by the company I want my CV to go to so of course you go with the ones that are.
They all lie anyway.

Who has better contacts within the company? Who can get you the fastest interview? Who pays the biggest rate?

Who has better contacts high up within the company? Who can get you the fastest interview? Who pays the biggest rate? These days you get 12 CVs going for a role, 18 months ago it was more like 3 or 4... the agent that can get you the fastest interview is the one you choose.... You need to interview the agent also.

Yeah.
Feck allegiance, I took the guy that the company have approved as their agents.
And it would be an awesome job with an awesome company.

Having worked for a financial recruitment agency for a few years, I would recommend having zero loyalty to any agent or agency.
They would step over their own mother for a placement and commission.
