From yesterday's Observer:

March 2003: Roy Keane snubs a £2m Man United testimonial: 'I won't rip off the fans.' A pal told the tabs:'Roy knows he's privileged to be earning so much: he doesn't want to tharow that back in the fans' faces by squeezing even more out of them.'

As far as I've heard, Keane gives a fierce amount to charity anyway.

Friend of mine's father was dying a few years ago, and a friend called Keane's solicitor. Anyway, next week, Roy pops round to see my friend's father, gives out jerseys signed by all the Man U team and an Ireland jersey.

He then followed it up by heading down to the children's ward with a box of jerseys. The hospital staff said to my friend that he does it all the time, but he doesn't allow it to be put in the papers n stuff.

I get what you're saying but if he did want it "left known" that he does work for charity he could turn up at 2 "big" charity events annually and get his photo in the paper.

nor is it a reason to shower him with praise, he's a multi-millionaire footballer who does a bit of charity work.(its in most players contracts that they have to visit sick kids in hospitals anyway)

yet repeatedly we are bombarded with anecdotal stories of whats begining to look more like charidee work

1) Absolutely not.

2) If Quinn is to be praised for donating all his cash to charity then is Keane not to also be praised - regardless of whether or not there are anecdotal stories of "charidee" work.

Quinn, to some, is an Ireland legend. I couldn't say a bad word against him (even though he's a rubbish presenter) because he gave me some of my most fond memories as an Ireland supporter. Keane, like it or not, gives many people the same memories.

While I don't get the "love Roy Keane, hate Niall Quinn" I don't get why some despise him no matter what course of action he takes and I don't understand why some love him no matter what course of action he takes.

When he was being touted for Celtic I only wanted it if he came in at the right price for Celtic and one or two lambasted me because he was a "legend" and Celtic were acting unprofessionally by not breaking the bank. As it happens we didn't break the bank to have him at Celtic and I wouldn't like to see him there if it were costing us more than what he is. However, I also don't get where some people are coming from, criticising him for everything and anything he does.

Personally, having seen him come in and do a decent job, I'm glad we have him but I'd be just as happy to see any other player of a similar ability come in and change our midfield. I've seen nothing yet to make me fawn over him but he's done nothing in his time at Celtic for me to want to spit fire his direction.

agree with most of that MON, i think the reason quinn got the plaudits is because he was the first to do it. now they all have to copy him or they'll look like assholes.

Couldn't agree more, though obviously with lower league players it's a bumper payday for years of service. For those earning huge wages it should be a no brainer, especially the likes of Giggs etc.

It's all private
What do you know about what Ryan Giggs did with his money
The thing that pissed some people off about Quinn is that he is very much in the cosying up to the media mode and almost drew too much attention when he was talking about his donations
The Keanes and (for all you and i know) Giggs's of the world like to do things behind the scenes
Has Keane talked about this testimonial in public
No
Will he keep the money or give it to charity
Only he knows

Update:

Testimonial: He'll only play for Celtic - all proceeds to charity in Manchester, Cork, Dublin and Glasgow

''I know there’s been players criticised over the years but if United and Celtic fans want to go to the game well and good. If they don’t, I’d say don’t bother. We’ll see what happens.''

In other news, it looks like he's retiring in the summer.
