I'm looking to buy a used car but I'm fairly clueless when it comes to motors. I can spend up to €5,000 and was hopefully looking for something like a 1.4l, roughly 60,000 miles, maybe an Astra Hatchback or something like that. Any recommendations on where to look?
Are those Astra's reliable?
I was told to stay away from Fiat's, Seats, Rovers. I presume Ford's and Opels are alright?

If you want something reliable go for a corolla.

Ya, you cant really go wrong with a corolla, hence they're common as muck.
Youd pick up a very clean 95, 96 reg one for 3500-4000.
Just get a japanese or german car and you should be safe enuf.
Get autotrader, ring around, youll be rolling on chrome 22's in no time :-P

15km/h over the limit you're hardly Ayrton Senna.

A 95ish corolla would be much cheaper than that. Don't pay more than 2000 for one.

It was actually 25 km/hr over the limit.

astras aren't the best for starting - civics corollas mazdza 323 will start every time, as will the older golfs but they are slow to stop and slow to accelerate. you could for a 1.6 20v corolla they are reasonably quick, an older 1.5 sir civic a 1.6 mazda 323 f 99-ish

nice one lads..
I actually ended up getting a 98 Astra 3 door hatchback. Its got 60,000 miles on it and not a scratch so I'm happy enough. Set me back 4,400.

Ya, got the car in PJ O Hea's on Patricks Quay and they did the timing belt, and gave me a 6 month warranty.
