Koeman gets his $0.02 in early

Koeman Forecasts More English Doom (http://www.peoplesrepublico fcork.com/~peoplesr/forums/)10/02/06
Benfica manager Ronald Koeman gone out on a limb to predict that both Chelsea and Liverpool will go the way of Manchester United in the first knockout round of the Champions League.

The former Barcelona championship hero helped oversee the demise of the Red Devils during group play and sees no reason why the Portuguese champs can’t claim another Premiership scalp in Liverpool.

“Why not? We eliminated Manchester United and so we can do the same to Liverpool,” he told Sport. “The bad thing is that we have to play the second leg at Anfield because it’s a very imposing stadium.”

Adding fuel to the fire, Koeman also foretold Barca revenge against Jose Mourinho’s Blues.

“There are two things that lead me to believe that the azulgranas (Barca) are superior,” he explained. “Above all, Barca have learned from what happened last year at Stamford Bridge.”

“Secondly, because the return leg will be at Camp Nou, whatever the score the crowd will lift the players.”

Champions League is where it's at. You'd think the FA Cup was a big deal the way some are going on about.
I think Benfica may spring a surprise, can't see where the Liverpool goals will come from
Chelsea have a game on their hands but the pitch should be a great leveller.

Tough game for Chelsea regardless of the pitch.
Back 4 look more suspect than usual, a score draw would be a massive result for Barca.
The Champions League is where the defensive minded teams come into their own and for this reason you'd have to give Chelsea a great chance.

As for the Pool they should have enough in midfield to overcome Benfica but again its hard to see where the goals will come from.

We went with what was for Liverpool a fairly attacking line-up , I dont think that was the reason we lost tho

A slip in concentration was all really , we looked the better side and should take this crowd in 2 weeks

Will they though?
Liverpool aren't exactly renowned for scoring lots of goals.
It'll be tough, Benfica are no mugs.

If Liverpool don't score early it will be very tough.
We all know what antics the Portugese will get up to.

I thought Liverpool were poor for the 65 mins I saw last night.
Even pre goal they gave the ball away an awful lot.
Sissoko was a loss when he went off.

Fowler looked hopeless but the supply was worse.

I had to laugh when one of the TV3 commentators said he didn't understand why Kewell went down on the end line for his free instead of continuing on.

I was like sure we all know the Pool strikers can't score from play - so he was better off from the set piece.

Hyppia or Finnan might have stuck it in.

Zonal marking.

They should forget about it and go back to man for man marking.

Hopefully Benfica will nick an away goal at Anfield, and it will finish 1-1 with Benfica going through.

The sooner the likes of Liverpool and Rangers are knocked out the better and hopefully this year the final will be won in open play.

I'd say an Arsenal V Barcelona final would be a good spectacle for neutrals.

granted gallas' goal from a corner was a failure of the system, but ferdinands goal was a mistake by krompkamp coupled with a good header from rio.
just because they let a few in from set pieces, people jump all over them ridiculing the zonal marking system. last year it did cause a lot of problems mainly cos the players didn't know how to implement it, but its working for the most part this season.

No it wasn't. There's a big difference between the system being wrong and the player doing the wrong thing within the system.

Implemented perfectly, neither zonal nor man to man marking should ever yield a goal, but thats just not going to happen.

Does anyone know how many goals Liverpool have conceded from dead balls this season?

I think that zonal marking is great in theory but as Sam Allardyce, and to a lesser extent, Ruud Van Nistelrooy have proved, a lot of the time Referees interpretation of the offside rule can have a big impact on how it works in practice. You are right in what you say regarding the "implemented perfectly" thing of course.

Don't care, not interested in the more parochial "papers," remember "Fog in Channel, Europe Cut Off?"

This is our premier competition, and in all fairness, I enjoy discussing it with my French friends and neighbours.

We are all Europeans, and to be honest, out of the British teams remaining in the competition, the consensus appears to be that Liverpool and Rangers are the two least likely to impress the neutrals.

Arsenal and Chelsea are much more highly regarded in the part of France that I spend time in.

Although the predominantly preferred club (after O L this year) is without doubt Barcelona. They aren't too keen on Bayern either, but that could be due to historical reasons.

Gwonyalanger, with your parochial west Brit attitude. And who's this "we" tonto?

Getting back to the question regarding Bayern V Milan:

Quant aux joueurs du Bayern, qui restaient sur quinze succès consécutifs dans leur nouveau stade de l'Allianz Arena, ils ont été tenus en échec (1-1) par un solide Milan AC, un penalty d'Andreï Chevtchenko répondant à un but signé Michael Ballack.

Which, roughly translated reads as: "Bayern Munich who were looking to extend their run of 15 consecutive wins at the new Allianz Arena were held to a 1-1 draw by a solid AC Milan, who scored through an Andrei Chevtchenko penalty in repsonse to a goal from Michael Ballack."

I'll have to look up about how I got ITV1 London, because that's got a very good Soccer London show every week that goes through all the London Clubs. ITV1 Granada has a similar one for the North West. I'll try and find it for you by tomorrow, or the link to it.
