I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Captain Planet for stating earlier in the season that Newcastle United had a good chance of finishing in the top 4 of the league without Chelsea, Arsenal or Man Utd involved. It now looks like I was talking through my hole.

Newcastle United in fact are toilet and this despite the fact that they have some good individual players. Souness is as bad a manager now as he was at Liverpool.

you're not alone there shammy,i too tipped them for a top 6 finish i think, have had some bad luck with injuries but still should be higher in the PL considering the money spent and the players they have.

He's disastrous. Look at the team and look where he has them. It's taken Liverpool this long to get over him, he should be carted off before he does similar.

They have the squad for a top 4 finish but you can't win games with Boumsong and Bramble in defence in fairness. Given must hate Saturdays.

Am I the only person who thinks that he's not a bad manager?

Look at his buys this season

Owen
Lique
Emre

they are all long term injuries and Dyer is nearly always injured.

It's interesting to read what Fowler has to say about him, he had lots of young players coming through when he was the manager and it was the old guard who didn't like him.

very true - souness played a huge role in developing Gerrard, Carragher, Thompson, Fowler, McManaman et el. AS did Evans. Then Houllier swanned in, bought himself extra breathing space by saying it was a mess there and took the credit for unearthing the likes of Stevie G.

Poor ol Graeme. Needs that moustache back i think.

Souness left the club when Gerrard was 13 & Thompson/Carragher didn't make their debuts until 1996 (Souness had left 2 1/2 years earlier) so I don't think he can take much (if any) credit in the development of those players

Having said that he did blood Fowler & McManaman (although any idiot could see their natural talent) and ensured that both had vast experience at the highest level by the time they hit 21. A major problem for the young players of today who are often shipped out to obscure feeder clubs until they hit their 20's and are then expected to be instantly comfortable in the presence of players who are far superior to those they worked with on a day-to-day basis.

In Souness' favour though is the fact that King Kenny did leave an ageing side which needed an overhaul. Unfortunately too many of Souness' signings were flops (esp. those hard men he bought in his own image - Dicks & Ruddock) and he got rid of too many of the existing crop who were (1) far from past their best and (2) experienced winners - e.g. Staunton, Beardsley & Houghton to name but 3.

On the whole Souness' regime at Anfield was a failure although to be fair it was quite a tough job to take on (being in Kenny's shadow) and it was far too early in his managerial career (which I'm sure he'll freely admit)

That's harsh. Yes, we all know he didn't exactly cover himself in glory at the time, but the fact of the matter was, whoever took the job would have had to deal with a squad that had been allowed to grow old together- no easy task. Liverpool were always going to be set for a spell in the (relative) wilderness.

granted he was long gone but players don't magically appear when the make their debuts. Souness was renowned for his interest in the youth system. Thats why Thompson was given the heave ho - he was in charge of the youths at the time and his sole tactic was to break their spirit to show they weren't strong enough. He's done lots more but for this action alone i think we owe souness.

And i'm just taking the opposite view anywya coz i'm bored!

Looks like I will have to eat my own words Captain Planet. As things presently stand, Newcastle do stand 4th in the table if you remove Chelsea,Man Utd and Arsenal from the betting. My bet has a good chance of coming in for a place Each Way which will pay 3/1!

Souness was still shit though...Roeder has done a great job...

They'll have to hold their current position or better for you to get a return. They're actually third now without the top 4. I backed Blackburn each way at 25/1 in that same market so all going well, we'll both be happy.
