Okay,
I had an iol.ie email address on the home computer. The computer is and always has been a disaster but recently I switched to smart but I still cant send or receive emails.

I did try but when it gets to the incoming and outgoing servers (POP3 and SMTP - no idea what that is all about) I dont know where to find that info

What do I do. I know it would be easier to just set up a hotmail account or something but the old email address is printed on business cards and the like

Anyone?

You should note that if you're not on the IOL network (it's called Esat BT now) you will not be able to send and receive email using a client. This means that you can't use Outlook Express to access your IOL account. You can, however, use the IOL webmail system at http://webmail.iol.ie

Try

POP3 Server (Outgoing):

pop.iol.ie

SMTP Server (incoming) :

mail.iol.ie

I used these addresses (or whatever you call them) and I can receive email thanks but I can't send anything

Any ideas?

you can't use their SMTP server if you are not logged in to their network.

if you use another SMTP server, you won't be able to send mail from the iol.ie domain.

i'd say chuck that email address and get another one.
