Hi,
I have an old laptop from a previous job that I want to give to my kid. The problem is I do not have admistrator access and cannot install any software onto it.

I do not have the admin password - cannot get it and I dont have the NT software.

It is a Dell Lattitude.

Can this be unlocked, is it easy, or do I buy another one ?

You'll probably have to format the hard drive and reinstall windows.

you dont have to buy a new one

if you just get a original copy of say windows 98
and install that onto the laptop you shoudl be fine.

it will wipe everything off, and just leave you with windows 98

you might want to check the specification of the laptop,
if its running NT, it might not be that powerful, i could be wrong tho!
Nt is old.....

if you can get windows 98 onto it, it will e fine for the internet & microsoft office, but not much more if it is a low specification laptop -
ie wont be able to play any new games....

it isnt so easy to wipe nt - you need an updated version of fdisk to deal with ntfs partitions. try here www.bootdisk.com
probably 98 would run fine but thats yer limit

if its NT chances are its not upto date with the lastest patches which makes it easier to hack. there's a few ways of getting admin passwords or getting admin access on ur local account.

Try google for lophtcrack or using Knoppix Cds etc....
