Can I piggy back this to ask a question about I Pod videos? Young son has one but does not know how to go about getting dvds onto the machine. Old father has no clue . Fool proof step by step guide would be very welcome.

This is probably due to you disconnecting he iPod without ejecting it both from iTunes and "Safely remove peripherals..." in Window's system tray (Bottom Left of your screen). This can cause data loss on any data storage device removed incorrectly.
Connect the iPod to your computer, go to My Computer> Right-click on the iPod (If you do not see the iPod, reset it pressing Menu-Select for 5-6 Sec - do it more than once if necessary), select format and just click on continue/start (Do not select 'fast format' option). Once the format has completed, launch the iPod Updater Application and rinstall the software onto the iPod.
This should solve your problem.
Does the ipod not allow for hotplugging without the need to "eject" it?
Pity...

Basically, you can't put ANY video on the iPod video. Videos have to be a specific format: .mp4 (M-PEG 4) or .m4v (H.264). So, unless you have downloaded some video features from iTunes music store, which are already in the correct format, most likely your normal video file is in an unsupported format. Hence you need to convert those video files into one of the supported formats. Quick Time Pro (To enable the Pro features you need to purchase a registration key) can do that. The newer version of iTunes (6.0.2) does that too. Many third party free-ware will also convert most videos to .mp4 at least.
Once converted and imported into the iTunes library, you need to create a playlist with just video files, then sync it with your iPod.

The worst thing about ipods is itunes. It is such a crappy programme that gives you little freedom when working with your ipod. It is just trying to promote the online music store that apple has. I mean what idiot actually buys MP3s online, just download them for free.

Download a program called CopyPod - that allows you to get files from the iPod back to the PC (which you normally can't do in Windows/OSX or iTunes).
If CopyPod finds nothing, and you REALLY need to get your files back, you might try running an Undelete program (can download a few free ones) and search your iPod as a hard drive.

Go to your c: drive, go to my documents, my music, itunes and then a folder called itunes music, your songs should be in there. Otherwise do a search for a song name from the start menu.,
