Samuel Eto'o has slammed the French and Spanish media for suggesting that he is envious of Ronaldinho, and believes that his performances at Barcelona are not appreciated.
The Cameroon striker was not among the top three in the final poll for the Ballon d'Or and is frustrated that his exceptional form last season and at the beginning of this campaign have gone unnoticed.
"Since I have been at Barca, tell me who has done more than Eto'o?" he asked. Ronaldinho?
"I'm not saying that I am the best, but I have scored more goals than anyone else.
"I have not been one of the top three in the Ballon d'Or, but I have been equal to, if not better than some players.
"I am not saying that I am the best, but I am no worse than anyone else either."
French sports daily L'Equipe accused Eto'o of being envious of the attention and awards being lavished on his team-mate Ronaldinho, but the Fifa World Player and African Player of the Year nominee says that nothing could be further from the truth.
"Envious of what?" he blasted. "I play for the best team in the world, score more goals than anyone and they pay me a lot of money to do what I love.
"I am appreciated by those people that matter.
"I am happy for Ronnie, I love him as if he were my brother.
"I will be as happy if Ronaldinho wins it as much as I will be if I do."
Eto'o then hit out at the organisers of the European Player of the Year, claiming he would be more likely to win it if he played in France.
"The French press do not accept somebody unless they have played in France at some point." Michael Owen, Sheva, Figo, Rivaldo, Ronaldo etc. None of these ever played in France Mr. Eto'o
