this poll was also done last year, I think apart from Naff, nobody predicted the pool at this stage last year.It could make for interesting reading in May
edit: poll can only have 10 options, so if you select 1 from the other box, post who you think it is.

Barca.
But without Xavi they'll need Van Bommel playing super.
Ronnie, Messi and Eto'o are savage though.
A handful for any defence and defensive minded team.

Inter. Not that I feel terribly confident about it or anything, and certainly not because they're the best team (they're obviously not). I just have a hunch that the pressume of competing on two fronts will tell on a lot of the otehr top contenders. Inter have effectively only the CL left to play for.

i think they'll stumble through and come good towards the end of the campaign.

Interesting choice. I mean, Porto 2004, Liverpool 2005... why not?

I went for Juve because they're running away with the league in Italy.
It's a stronger line up than recent years, with perhaps only Benfica, Rangers, Bremen and Ajax having no hope. I expect good runs from Lyons and PSV again (assuming they don't draw each other...)

also fancy juve, think there are best side in europe at the moment both defensively and offensively, obvious barca are the most attractive but as we saw at stamford bridge last year are very vulnerable at the back and they have done little over the summer to tell me they have sorted that problem, milan are not playing as well as they were this time last year, hiddink is working miracles again at the phillips stadion, psv look stronger to me this year than they did last year even after losing park, van bommel, bouma and would be a good bet to reach the semis again given a decent draw...
I think the Italians are in prime postion followed by Chelsea and Liverpool. Barcelona will win nothing, too flaky when it goes down to the business side of things

it's an interesting one this year; so many variables that i think it's even more difficult than usual to predict a winner. Barca are the obvious choice but unproven to be fair in europe. Real are still capable of anything. I see no one has gone for the gunners. on current form that's fair. You can't count out the pool these days. Chelsea and Juve would prob be my choices to be favs and i'll plump for juve on current form.
Leaping from the fence i'm going to count out both Milan teams and Bayern. Lyon could be dark horses.
I think the pool will win it again, I'm then going into hiding for a year.
Where's the final on?

Yup, Liverpool have as much chance as anyone its anyones this year (with the possible exception of Rangers)
I went for Barca but we'll see.

I had a premenition that Liverpool would lift the title once again
Remember thos pope died in 77 , wales won the grand slam in 77 , pool won the EC in 77 yokes from last year
Not that I'm clutching at strawas or anyhting but have any of those come up this year yet for 2006?
I love watching Barca but Xavi is a HUGE loss for them , orchestrates everything in the midfield and i'mnot sure Deco can fill his boots

Huge loss yes but it might give Van Bommel the chance to come into his own granted his passing isn't as good and he's not as creative.

So are Barca and Milan.
Milan will implode at some stage again!!
On their day I think they are untouchable.
Even more so than Barca
But I've backed Ronnie and the boys and am sticking with it

Im going with my heart rather than my head. My head says that they cant win a header in defence, they have slow full backs, they dont like a tackle etc, etc. But I'm plumbing for the romantic notion that Ronnie and the Catalan Globetrotters will score more than the Italians who will try to bore them to death.
Come on Barca!!!!

It "SHOULD" be Barcelona's for the taking but for the past two seasons it "SHOULD" have been AC Milan's name on the trophy!!! I think Lyon or Arsenal will make the final and have a very good chance of winning it.

I'd say either Barca or Milan, with Lyon and maybe Juve as outside bets.
I'd probably just about favour Milan over Barca, as they're more solid defensively and after throwing it away last year, they'll be very motivated to put tings right this time around.

You could have said the exact same thing last season about Milan after they threw away a 3 goal first leg lead against Deportivo the previous season. They seem to have a knack of throwing away 3 goal leads.

Retaining the champions league is a mammoth task even for cultured sides let alone the journeymen of Anfield. It just doesn't happen.

It used to happen though, what about the Real Madrid era from 1955 to 1960?
Some might say that the Munich air disaster contributed to this dominance but the records don't lie.
Imagine winning a final 7-3, like they did in Hampden against Eintract Frankfurt in front of nearly 150,000 fans.
Nine titles in all, I'd say it will be a long time before someone beats that.
And don't forget about Nottingham Forest. They managed to retain the trophy and have won it more times (twice) then they have won their national league(once).

True enough
That was the old European Cup though
It's become much harder to win since the competition has been expanded to include league runners up and 3rd and 4th teams
More games and better teams
Not to detract from that Madrid side (best club side ever for me) but some of the teams entering in the early 80s were distinctly average
I know an unfancied Porto and liverpool won it recently but i can't see the likes of Villa, who had a squad of about 14 players, winning it again!

i'd say its easier to win it these days. back when it was a proper cup competition, you might only get to compete once every couple of seasons (or if your utd, every quarter of a centuary or so :p ). the fact that you (any team in that regularly finishes in the top 4) can get in every year ups your odds of winning

Well the converse is that Liverpool wouldn't have got into it since 1990 if it had stayed the way it did

look at it this way. if it was the old format, liverpool wouldn't even have been in last years CL! so i think because you get more chances to enter, you have more chances of winning. sure you might have more games to play, but everyone has to play the same amount to get to the final!

Yeah maybe
you also can lose a few games unlike before
It's a tricky one it doesn't allow for losing but it does mean that those who win face better teams along the way
The big difference is probably that the best team in each country were not always the best team the following year so that in form team wouldn't have been there.
No matter what way you look at it though whoever wins it deserves the title because its the hardest club competition to win
Much harder than International ones like the World Cup and in this day and age it's refreshing that no-one has ever retained it in the modern era

Even if they at least got rid of the ridiculous "seeding" concept, it would be a start, but the G14 won't allow that because they depend on TV rights, so it is seeded to "keep the big teams apart" (translation: ensure that countries with the biggest TV audiences stay in).
As you say, money talks.
