DEEP BREATHS EVERYONE,

This is not a 'let's bash England' thread. I for one never knew England had such huge numbers playing rugby. Were one to go on the effect of numbers alone it is strange to see why they have not done better ? They have an incredible 200,000 more playing rugby than Ireland has, yet the All Blacks have just over double our numbers. But the performances are world's apart.

The three powerhouses over the last thirty years are the southern hemisphere's. South Africa, Austrailia and New Zealand. This should be proof alone that some nations have something different in the way they look at the sport or in the way they feel about it. Rugby to these nations is not just a sport, it's much more.

Look at the top five. Notice anything in the figures ?. All of them have greater numbers of adults than youth!! England has double (maybe as a result of the world cup ?)

Any true rugby fan here should click on the link below, you'll learn something, i swear. Then come back and tell us what you've learned ...without using crude language and bringing this thread down to a shouting match like the Irish rugby threads.....go on, i dare you.

Personally, i just don't think the best young athletes want to or indeed end up playing Rugby in England whereas they do in places like New Zealand and South Africa where it is the No.1 sport. As for the Aussies well they are probably the greatest sporting nation in the world all things considered and they just know how to breed winners. -AmadeusDC-

Its as simple as that. Many of our best athletes are playing Gaelic Games, the best athletes in England are playing football. The best athletes in the States play american football or basketball. Participation numbers are less relevant when you consider where the cream of athletic talent goes. The most athletic kids will usually be playing at least 2 sports. In England, if the two sports are soccer and rugby, and a kid of about 16 has to choose between concentrating on one or the other in an attempt to make pro, then soccer will usually win, because there are so many more job oppotunities.

How many of the All-Blacks actually come from New Zealand nowadays. Their team seems to consist of a lot of Samoans, Tongans, and Fijians.

As for the figures, the truly shocking figure there is the number of youth players in Scotland. Ireland and Wales are both 4x higher. How bad are Scotland going to be in 10 years time.

The New Zealand team aren't all Kiwis if you look at Umaga, Caucau, Rococoko, Nonu etc their from the Pacific Islands and are poached by New Zealand to the detriment of rugby in the Pacific Rim.
