if were are goin to qualify, what needs to happen.

We have to beat swiss.

But if frace beat cypruss do we have a play off, and if by some miracle cypruss draw with france do ireland go through?

GROUP 4 P W D L GF GA Pts
Israel 10 4 6 0 15 10 18
Switzerland 9 4 5 0 18 7 17
France 9 4 5 0 10 2 17
Ireland 9 4 4 1 12 5 16
Cyprus 9 1 1 7 8 16 4
Faroe Islands 10 0 1 9 4 27 1

So a 1-1 draw in the Cyprus/France match with Ireland beating the Swiss would win us the group.

Any result which involves Ireland winning and France not winning means we win the group. No need to bother about actual scorelines.

We win and France win and we're in playoffs.

Lose or draw and it's Goodnight Berlin and Goodnight Brian Kerr!!!...no matter what the French do

I suppose it could be any one of the following at the moment :

Romania
Czech Republic
Turkey
Denmark
Greece
Slovakia
Russia
Norway
Serbia & Montenegro
Spain
Sweden
Croatia

It'd be nice to get revenge on Turkey, Russia or Spain, though I dunno are we capable??

looking at the teams that are there i'd say norway wouldn't be the worst team to play. if scotland can beat them then we should too. the only thing is i have very little confidence in us beating anyone anymore. hopefully things will go well on wednesday anyway

It's looking very doubtful, I've always been some bit optimistic concerning the Irish team, not now though.

They have the ability to do it, but after that Cyprus game, fuckin' hell.

I mean you just couldn't see any of those fuckers scoring.

O Shea plays shit for Ireland, Carr is rubbish, Finnan isn't a midfielder, Cunningham is a gerriatric, Dunne isn't producing club form for Ireland, Duff is isolated and we aren't getting him into games with long balls, Roy Keane is out, Zinedine Kilbane must be the most unrealistic nickname ever the man is BRUTAL, Kavanagh isn't much better, Robbie Keane wouldn't score in a whore house with a blank cheque, and Morrison is about as Irish as Mohammed Ali and 5th choice striker for Birmingham.

It doesn't look good - thats all topped off with a negative manager.
If we go ahead he'll probably bring on 3 "defenders" - I dunno if you could call Gary Breen that.

Confident about Wednesday so!!!!!!!!!!
The best thing that can happen to an Irish team is having no expectation so yed never know we could win (well we can hardly play worse!!!!!!)
Oh yeah
The fact that Clinton isn't Irish by birth never mattered when we were talking about the Ray Houghtons of the world so it shouldn't matter now. He's with Palace too by the way, who are admittely playing at a lower level to Birminham.

Drop Robbie "throw hands in air and gimmie da ball" Keane to the bench.
Morisson & Elliott up front - energy and creativity required as Swiss defence very good.
Register John O'Shea for some FAS course as he does'nt have a footballing brain.
Kavanagh must be dropped also.Holland at least held up the ball a bit.

Fat Tom

I'd play Holland and Kavangh, Reid on Left, Reid on Right.
Keane is still better than Elliot and Morrison.
I'd play Morrison and Keane.
At the back Drop Carr for Finnan, O Shea left (he'd wanna cop on), and lets just hope Dunne has one of his Holland moments and Kenny is inspired coz they were truly awful on Saturday.

I know Morrison is with Palace my point is that he was 5th choice for Birmingham.

I don't trust the thought of Dunne against the Swiss. They are quick and its been shown plenty of times before that he is too easily left for dead by fast, nippy forwards. But sure who else are ya gonna put there, so we'll just have to suffer on.

I don't understand why himself and O Shea can't at least reproduce club form for Ireland.

Saying that we have no better options.

dont think o' sheas club form at united is all that great either to be honest with ya!

Thats why I said at least.
He does ok for Man U, for Ireland he is playing shocking stuff.

his distribution is awful and just looks clumsy at times, dont think he even knows whats his best position - i certainly dont

Left back injuries at man u are forcing him to the right.
With Man U I think his ball playing ability is his best asset.
He can play, defensively he can be very poor but the boy has great potential still.
I'll never forget the first time I saw him live on tv for man u against chelsea, he was unreal, destroyed Hasselbaink and got man of the match.
That 1st season he was amazing, he needs to recapture some form right away, I don't think there is any doubting he has the ability he just needs some confidence and consistency.

yeah looked a class act that night, didnt put a foot wrong - now though i would cringe if i saw him play centre back for united, seriouly lacks concentration and gets himself in trouble far too often with his poor positioning.

ball watcher extraordinaire the other night so he was. the cypriots were targeting him too the more the first half wore on.I'd be worried that a technically better team like the swiss will exploit our weak left flank(With duff being out)

What the fuck does Stephen Carr have to do to get dropped? He was skinned twice in 2 minutes in the 2nd half. And he's bloody fat! Not even fat for a footballer, but just plain fat!

andy reid will prob get the nod to replace duff and with his tendancy to drift infield o'shea could be seriously exposed.

its important wednesday that ireland are aggressive and try to unsettle the swiss.

I thought id never say this after the brutal displays he put in for Ireland during the last world cup, but here goes....
Bring back Harte.
He cant be any worse than that useless fecker O' Shea. At least Harte can pass a ball and take free kicks. O'Shea was terrible the last night, but in his favour so was the rest of the back four. Cunningham is past it and has looked it for most of these qualifiers. Dunne's just too slow, and Carr, well hes just plain shit. All he does is get booked and yet the fucker never seems to gets suspended. Move Finnan back, Steven Reid on the right, Andy Reid on the left. Holland and take your pick of any of the other dopes, their all as bad as each other.
Keane and Morrison up front.

Still think we haven't a hope in hell...

The last few United games that I saw O' Shea was incredibly bad with his distribution, gave the balls away so many times.

He was unreal during his first season, remeber him nut megging Figo? Class!!

Kilbane needs to be dropped big time usa. Get stephen reid in there big time usa. Really lacking through the centre and about everywhere else for that matter, but i can't put two centre mids in my head that might do ok. Hope Andy Reid starts on the left, hope he's not wasted on the right just to accommodate Kilbane. Morrison to start big time usa and Keane. Whatever about elliot scoring, he didn't hold up the ball once against the cypriots, try to turn his man all the time, which meant blind alleys and no man's land. Why isn't Andy O Brien not starting? thought he started the the first few group matches, when we were at our best, and now just because 'The honey monster' has cleaned up his act and is getting good press, he gets dropped? If switzerland get a goal forget about winning because i don't see us getting two, it'll have to be a one-nil win, jammy goal, backs to the wall stuff and then sure, playoffs???forget it

O'Shea's change in form has been astonishing alright since his first season. I know players always find it tougher after the first season honeymoon period but o'shea has gone well backwards. I have heard that he was great friends with the reserve striker Jimmy Davis who died in August 2003 and that it affected him big time. Could make sense

Bring back harte?
Steve Carr is shit?
Cunningham past it and Dunne shit?
Harte can't defend, whatever about o'shea, but harte certainly can't
carr's one of the best full backs in the league
cunninghams a good defender. dunnes had a great season last year and is doing so this year.

now i'm not saying there are brilliant players, but they're not shit. o'shea excluded perhaps. harte is pants and all steven reid does is pass the ball backwards. he really is shit.

Carr can't defend plain and simple. I can't remember a good game he has played for us during the qualifiers. Same goes for Cunningham, he's past it. Dunne is having a good season for City sure but he never repeats that form for Ireland. He's too slow, speed wise and his reading of the game.

At least Harte can take free kicks. We can't seem to get the ball past the first man lately.
