I rather liked the Ceann Comhairle inviting Brian Cowen to make his farewell speech to the Dail yesterday by introducing him as Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

But I admit this may not be A FITZY in the traditional sense of the word.

Reminds me of an RTE newsreader (Don Cockburn I think), seeing the name Seve Ballesterous on the autocue and thinking it was a misspelling saying Steve Ballesterous had won the Irish Open even though he was already very famous by then. Also the parade ring announcer in Cheltenham saying that Desert Orchard had won the Gold Cup.

Now that's a Fitzy.

It reminds me of an incident a friend was telling me about years ago outside Henry's. The lads were trying to crack onto some old dolls who were having none of it so in an attempt to save face one of them shouted back:

"yer only a pack of sluts anyway - S-L-O-T-S, Sluts!"

Everyone broke out in laughter and it was followed with another lad replying:

"ha ha ha ha, fucking langer, he spelled SALT!"

Mr Jefferson

Given helmets are deigned to protect against hurley stricks and the like, I thought it funny that they chose to use a pic of a player being dragged by the face guard. Presumably a modified helmet with no face guard (such as Joe Deanes) would have prevented said incident.

Maybe its just me.

Before too long your boss, your dad, your barber, your mechanic and schoolkids will be Fitzying. I can see it becoming a global phenomenon.

Someone needs to pull out ten of the most appealing Fitzy's and publish a guide that can be distributed. House-to-house leafleting, posters, billboard campaigns, radio ads need to be done.

A helpline could be set up to help people to construct and interpret Fitzy's.

Failing shows on TV like Republic of Telly could have a Fitzy of the Week with some of the Grandmasters of this thread imparting their wisdom.

There'll have to be an official council as already mentioned and of course there'll have to be a split into two separate bodies - each claiming to be the official Fitzy organisation.

The Fitzy organisation will have to have a headquarters and of course an award ceremony every year for the top Fitzy's.

Would you care to enlighten us?

What I've gathered so far is that its not look alikes and you must get the name mixed up or something.

A bit more structure here. I've included some ideas from other posters, and the "Origins" section came from Lamps. Hopefully it will come together to capture the essence of the fitz. Ask not what your fitz can do for you...

Definition
A fitzy (aka. fitz, niall fitz) is an argument or presentation made in written form which is based entirely, or almost entirely, on misconception. It usually involves a mangling of words, a corruption of ideas, or a juxtaposition of facts, images, words, events, or scenarios where it is evident how a link which is in fact non-existent was made by the author. A true fitz will always provide an amount of entertainment for the reader, though the actual comic effect will depend on the type and the context in which it occurs. The primary forms of the fitzy, the unintentional and the deliberate, are described in more detail later. Variations of both are possible however, such is the spontaneous and random nature of the event. Fitzies usually occur on internet message boards, but the definition is currently being extended to include blunders in other mass-media outlets.

Derivations of the term include "fiztyesque" (adj. to have the characteristics of a fitzy) and the term "to pull a fitzy" (an author has perpetrated a fitzy).

Origins
Niall Fitz is a fictional character hailing from Cork City, Ireland. He was conceived when a less than erudite internet forum poster known as Langer Dan informed the patrons of the People's Republic of Cork message board that a certain Niall Fitz deserved to be included on the GAA’s Hurling team of the Decade. There is in fact no such person/hurler. Forumites quickly took the character to their hearts and something of a cult icon was born.

The unintentional fitzy
The original form of the fitzy, and the most spontaneous, is most entertaining in that it encourages public ridicule of the author. It is customary to lampoon the author, and expose the folly of his ways, by using deliberate fitzies that are spin-offs of the original. The unintentional fitzy is usually the result of a certain confusion, feebleness of mind, and an uncertainty as to the true facts of a situation. A fitzy can provide particular hilarity where it forms part of an impassioned argument on a subject that the author is particularly indignant or angry about. The anger may in fact have been the source of the confusion in this situation, blinding the author to the true facts. The fitzy is often cruelly exposed with hilarious consequences, and used to completely invalidate the author's original argument.

Examples of this would include works of prose extolling the virtues of Cork hurlers, who, in fact, don't even exist. Similarly, arguments based on counties of Ireland that are only figments of the author's imagination, or other similar instances of geographical ignorance, fall into this category and should be exposed and ridiculed for what they are.

The deliberate fitzy
The second main form the art of fitzy is quite different to the original in that it is a construct created deliberately for comic effect. They are usually spawned in the "Niall Fitz appreciation thread" on the PROC website, where they are carefully nurtured by various internet posters. A deliberate fitzy may be used with devestating effect outside this thread to ruthlessly expose flaws in topical arguments. A successful deliberate fitzy can often be a labour of love for an author, as collecting the loosely-rated facts, images, and scenarios required is quite a skill.

Philosophy
Many true connoisseurs of the fitzy argue that they are not simply constructs of language and contrasting images, but rather something more intangible, like a state of mind. This, they say, is illustrated by the fact that one cannot truly understand fitzy unless they have experienced it for themselves. Others say it is a philosophy, one that gives a deep insight into the random workings of the human brain. Some also contend that a full understanding of this philosophy could lead to scientific discoveries and cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. All are agreed though that the fitzy phenomenon is alive and well on the internet and should be fostered for the entertainment of the masses.

Here you go.

TonyCork80
27-02-2012, 11:27 PM
This to my mind without being self-promoting, is a good solid entry-level Fitzy http://www.celticcafe.com/archive/People/flatley/Life_of_Luxury/images/George_Hamilton_800. jpg

TV3 sports commentary stalwart Jimmy Magee

Some Fitzyologists. myself included may use the medium to bring lookalikes to the attention of the broader Fitzying community. Fitzy purists vehemently oppose this practice, and it remains the most controversial issue in the field today.

The Sunday Times achieved a two-in-a-row Fitzy recently if I'm not mistaken.

Last Sunday week they had a picture of Donnacha O'Callaghan congratulating try scoring Rory Best with a caption along the lines of "Man of the Match Donnacha O'Callaghan congratulating....". It was Donnacha Ryan who got man of the match.

Then this Sunday they had a picture of Jamie Heaslip trying to stop Engerland from scoring a try but the caption was from the Welsh game against France. Obviously they forgot to replace the caption in the English edition with the Irish one.

Congratulations to them.

Ah lads, do ye not get the spirit of it?

It's too obvious and straight forward to say new Munster coach and throw up a picture of Axel Foley.

It needs to be developed so rather than pick the obvious I went with the other American black cop from a famous film. Thus the Fitzy.

By having to explain myself I feel either people aren't getting the Fitzy or it's ran it's course.

Sad day, lads.

I was thinking that Kate McCann has a similar hairstyle to Fernando Torres who is a former Atletico striker like Aguero.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/400-athletic-bilbao-fans-travelled-hungary-see-europa-180349205.html

Athletic Bilbao last won silverware in 1984, so fans of the popular Basque side travelled in their droves to attend the Europa League Final earlier this week for a chance to witness a rekindling of their former glory. Sadly, Falcao and ten other Atletico Madrid players were 3-0 victors on the night, which was particularly hard news to take for the 400 Athletic Club fans who traveled to Hungary for the game by mistake.

The final was held in Bucharest, Romania, but the geographically embarrassed supporters found themselves in vaguely-similar-sounding Budapest, a city roughly 500 miles away and in a completely different country.
