The Kerekes Band from Eger in Hungary have been given air tickets by their Government to fly to Cork for a short 7 day tour.
The Hungarian Government chose Ireland due to the similiarity of Hungarian & Celtic traditional music and they chose Cork due to it's present 'Capital of Culture status'. Kerekes' home town, Eger, is in the hat to wear the Capital of Culture crown in 2010 along with Budapest, Dabrecen, Győr, Miskolc, Pécs and Sopron. The Hungarian Government will name their nominee in October.
Kerekes tour will take in:
The Venue, Clonakilty 7th October
Trinity Rooms, Limerick 8th October
The Curragh Kildare 9th October (afternoon)
An Cruiscin Lan Cork 9th October (evening)
The View RTE1 11th October
Trinity Rooms Limerick, 12th October
Crawdaddy, The Pod, Dublin 13th October
Kerekes Band was formed in 1995 in Hungary where they became a well-known group in dance-houses performing folk and dance music from Moldova (a special mixture of Hungarian, Romanian, Serbian and Turkish folk music)
The Kerekes have had a regular dance-house in Eger since 1997.
The band started to play authentic folk music from Gyimes and Moldova and became Young Masters of Folk Art in 1998 (Awarded by the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage)
Kerekes have since discovered, accepted and adopted the effects of other contemporary music genres. In this way Kerekes could create a brand new free-style perfomance of this basically lively folk music. They've found their own unique sound which might be called world-music but, as it keeps the rhythm and completeness of folk music, is still different.
