Nigerian youngster John Obi Mikel was reportedly "intimidated and coerced into acting against his wishes" when he turned his back on a contract with Manchester United and declared he wanted to sign for Chelsea.

Mikel is at the centre of a bizarre tug-of-war between United and Chelsea after he signed a deal with the Old Trafford club only to turn up in London claiming he wanted to sign for the Blues instead.

He said that he had signed a contract in Manchester but did so "against his free will" - but now his registered agent has said that the coercion came after he signed the deal and not before.

In a letter seen by The Guardian and sent to the Premier League inquiry, agent Daniel Fletcher says that his client wanted to sign for United - but was scared into doing otherwise.

Fletcher says: "My information is that the player still expresses a firm desire to join Manchester United. It is clear the player is seemingly being intimidated and coerced into acting against his wishes."

But Fletcher has not been in contact with Mikel for several months, and Nigerian agent John Shittu now claims to be acting on the youngster's behalf.

It was Shittu who was at Mikel's side when he turned up in London claiming to be on the verge of signing for Chelsea.

Carlos Queiroz has said that Mikel was "almost kidnapped", while the Nigerian Football Association want to talk to Shittu about claims that he channelled money from Chelsea to Mikel's father.

But Shittu has claimed that he is acting in Mikel's best interests and that, far from "kidnapping" the 18-year-old, he was acting at his behest.

"We left Norway, at his request, to get the pressure off his head. He is now very relaxed," claims Shittu. "As his agent, I am determined that he will not be exploited by any club who may want to take advantage of him."

But Lyn Sporting director Morgan Andersen revealed last week: "The boys who live with John could see he was scared. He was crying. I feel really bad for John, he has to protect himself and his family in Nigeria.

"The agents tried to influence him to say he didn't want to play for Manchester United. He didn't want to do that but he he said he was under great pressure from those people."

Some dirty Russian Mafia bastards Chelsea are.
This transfer story is a fucking joke

Supposedly offered £50000 a week to sign an extension, if he signs it shows he doesn't have much ambition. I presume he didn't make the 10 game requirement to get a league medal this season and i doubt things will change next year, so why sign!...he'd get the same wages at utd or arsenal

Rio Ferdinand isn;t the brightest spark either but it does'nt stop him being one of the best defenders in the world. Plus Mikel is only 18.

If he's signed a deal with United then Chelsea will have to pay money to United for him or look elsewhere. Dont think Mikel will have endeared himself to Fergie.

he signed for united and it came as a surprise.
he stated his happiness at signing for a big club like most do, but i saw his introduction and he was beaming from ear to ear like. the boy looked genuinely thrilled. Mikel 21, forlans old number and all.

then all of a sudden, some people hear of it. he is flown to London (coincidence?) , is kept there for a day, reports of russian mafia in oslo, norway at the time he left (coincidence?) . he then comes out in a statement with Chelsea figureheads (coincidence?) and states how he was forced to sign a contract by Lyn and United, and he appeared like he has seen a ghost. gone was the happy smile. stern faces all around him.

now, i know i know. chelsea v united on and off the pitch - the fans only see one side.
but those are written accounts on a few football sites (not redissue for those few of you) that this is how the whole kidnapping transpired.
and it just seems to me there is too many coincidences in the second half of the story.
all you can read into the facts, is that chelsea are obviously sore for losing what they were calling "their player" at lyn oslo, yet its still a mystery how 4 nigerian kids even got to norway in the first place.

Asked if he wanted to play for United, Mikel told BBC's Newsnight programme: "No, because I don't want to."

Asked why he signed for the club, he added: "I don't know, something happened, you know? I don't want to play for them."

When pushed on why he signed for United, Mikel said: "I never wanted to play for United. I was forced to."

And when quizzed on who forced him, he said: "Some people."

Mikel's attitude to Chelsea was very different and when asked if he wanted to play for the Blues, he said: "Yeah, because I love Chelsea and I am going to be happy when I am there. They (Chelsea) know."

fair point,
except fot the ferdinand deal, 28.1 million was hardly a shady backroom deal. But you're missing my point, you have to look at the transfer market form a non-partisan point of view. every club is involved in shady tranfer dealings involving agents taking a substantial cut.

The entire system of transfers looks to be in need of revision, Im not offering solutions here but it seems a more rigid set of transfer processes between clubs needs to be put in place and violations of this system should result in hefty punishments, not just 15k fines. im talking along the line of point deduction.
still tho twill never happen.

Getting fair fucking sick of Kenyon highjacking United's transfer targets. First Robben, then Mikel and now the're trying to hi-jack the Essien deal now.
.

United dont have a god given right to say "hands off our transfer targets...". No team in the world is immune to transfer competition. In years gone by United had the biggest financial clout to sign the biggest players. Now with the arrival of Abramovich on the scene, the worm has turned, and they are at a disadvatage when it comes to competing in the transfer market and some united supporters are unhappy with the situation. Cest la vie.

United wouldnt pay the required money for Robben to PSV, Chelsea did...thats not hi-jacking, just good businesss on PSV's part. United had a chance to sign him and they blew it, plain and simple.

Essien is on his way to Chelsea....
Thats who he wants to go to...thats not hi-jacking anyones deal, thats his free choice.....

Who knows what the fuck is going on with Mikel, The player says he was forced in to signing a contract to united and united say that Chelsea kidnapped him. If I were Chelsea chief executive I would wash my hands of the situation.

In other transfer news Del Horno of Athletico Bilbao will be a blue by next week...I would have preferred Zambrotta but hey what can you do...

kenyon got sneaky and greedy with PSV and when the deal was reached for £12m, they came to sign papers and he said he was offering £8m tops. PSV told him to fuck off. Chelsea's blood money riches meant Kenyon didnt have to scrounge to make the same mistake twice. it was fair, but kenyon fucked us over.

essien can go to whoever he wants. he's a lyon player. i couldnt really care less anyway i havent seen him throw any great shapes in the majority of the season.

you should be delighted Zambrotta isnt coming. Del Horno is a brilliant attacking left back who will suit ye down to the ground overlapping on the left with robben, and will cause alot of teams terrible trouble. he's much better than Zambrotta, who was and in my opinion still is a better left winger, not a left back. Real should have got Del Horno while they had the chance.

Eto'o wont move from Barcelona. he'll do far better there in front of the worlds best player than he would at chelsea. and he'll get better treatment from Barca where he is recognised as one of the best in form strikers at the moment. plus they stood by him last summer (while Real shafted him) and played out their promise to bring him in and make him a big time player.

anyway chelsea cant talk about players being mouthy, they have Didier Drogba in their team, an even bigger moaner than Ryan Giggs! (incredibly)....

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Manchester United have conducted themselves properly during the John Obi Mikel transfer saga.

Fifa have ordered the Nigerian youngster to return to Norwegian club Lyn Oslo as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tug-of-war between United and Chelsea.
The Red Devils thought they had agreed a transfer in April, only for Mikel to claim Lyn sold him against his wishes as he would have preferred to join Chelsea.

The deal with United stipulated that the 19-year-old would head to Old Trafford in January, and Ferguson is hoping Fifa will ratify that arrangement.

"I know Fifa is spending a lot of time speaking to all the people who have been involved, including the (Norwegian) police," said the United boss.

"And they need to as it has to be a thorough investigation.

"The fact of the matter is that Mikel is a Manchester United player. The deal was struck with Lyn and the contracts were signed.

"There's no question in our mind that we've done everything in the right manner," he added to Sky Sports

Wanted starlet Mikel loses Lynn appeal

John Obi Mikel has lost the court case he hoped would push through his projected move from Lyn Oslo to the Premiership.

The 18-year-old Nigerian midfielder, who has been courted by Manchester United and Chelsea, had asked Oslo's city court to rule in a labour dispute, arguing the contract he has with Lyn was forged.

However the judgement went against Mikel, with the court advising his legal team the matter was a sporting rather than a labour dispute, and belonged in a court of sporting arbitration.

The teenager was billed with court costs of approximately £14,000 and Lyn declared themselves 'satisfied' with the verdict.

Lawyer Tron Dalheim, acting on behalf of Lyn, told PA Sport the case must now be heard by either FIFA or the Norwegian Football Federation.

Mikel is rated among the best players in the world in his age group.

However, after agreeing to join Manchester United last year, he then claimed to have been pressured into giving the Old Trafford club his word and announced he would rather sign for Jose Mourinho's Premiership champions.

United announced a deal for Mikel on April 29, 2005, when both parties declared themselves pleased with the agreement, however days later the youngster told Sky Sports: 'I signed a contract with Manchester United and I didn't do that of my own free will.'

However it means Mikel, who seems destined not to resume his Lyn career whatever the eventual outcome of his dispute, remains in footballing limbo.

Lyn insist the contract they have with Mikel is the genuine article, and FIFA barred Mikel joining any other club without his present side's say-so last August.

He has not played club football since early last year.

Former Lyn manager Hans Knutsen has described Mikel as 'the most promising player I've ever seen', telling PA Sport: 'He can definitely go all the way to the top of the game. I can't see anything stopping him making Nigeria a truly strong international team.

'He is physically prepared and tactically prepared - he's tactically superb - and I can't see anything which can stop him apart from the people around him.

'He's been a very good player and should soon become one of the outstanding players in the Premiership.'
