I hear people are coming from all over the country to enter the competition.

I agree this will add to the entertainment factor but would anyone agree with me that this is wrong.

It should be about cork dj's showcasing their talents and trying to make a name and get ahead in the game.

If some fein pops down from dublin/limerick etc for the day, wins and then fecks off again what has this done for cork music and the people trying to climb the ladder?

When I was in the comp years back you had to be in UCC to enter. But now you dont even have to be from the city.

Ill be there with my protest banner 2mrw!!

First off i changed the rules due to the fact that having a competition just for ucc students wasnt very good for any aspect of the competition. You have to agree that since the competition has been opened up to everyone it has grown to be a massive event for the week. The standard has also improved ten fold, which i think is the most important thing.

I can see your point about DJ's around Ireland entering, but i can't agree. Last year Rian Ryan won the techno, a dublin DJ. Since then he has come down to cork to play at a good few of our gigs, never asked for a penny in payment (not even for travel expenses) and has earned himself a good reputation. He even wants to move down here in order to help build the scene back up again.

People who enter from around the country arent doing it on the premise to win and then fuck off back home and never play in Cork again. Most DJ's want to play in as many different places as possible. I think they only add to the talent available.

The only people not from cork who have entered are the hideous pigeon from galway (hip-hop tomorrow), John Boy from ennis (Hip-Hop), eddie brennan and shaun hanlon (Techno wednesday) from Dublin.

I agree, I had a problem with this too when I was there a few years back.

Still-what has his "wanting" to move down to cork done for the cork music scene and what has his playing a few nights with ye done for the cork music scene and the people in it. If it was one of our own then it would have helped a fein get some money backfor the investment in his records and gear and get a bit of recognition that he/she deserves.

Heard their are more feins comin down again this year.

for fucks sake lads-its hard enough for corks own to get a name and a few gigs without guys from dublin etc, most of whom havent been to cork ever before, coming and taking the prize and headin back on the next train.

what has the guy who won last year done for the cork music scene?

only in cork would u have this "keep it local" attitude.

this is such a load of rubbish.surely the fact that the comp attracts attention from other counties etc only goes to show the good reputation its after getting.

and the winners for the last two years have been from cork.

itchy after getting a reputation as the best scratch dj in the city.supporting the likes of q-bert.

shelly played at salt, innercity, the night himself and sean did with jamie down in skib.a well recieved radio show on sub.a night in limerick with calvin james.im sure he could add more himself.

i thinks thats enough.im glad to see people coming for it,sense of satisfaction.

Its not a "keep it local attitude" its a, "its hard enough for guys from cork spending thousands on records and equipment, an amazing passion for music, and an amazing thirst to want to showcase their passion and talent in a pub/club some night attitude"

With a medium size population of cork they might be the best in cork and should deserve to win, but when its opened up to the country then he probaly isnt better than anto from dublin and he doesnt win it.

And Im not even talking about the comp as a whole, it may mean a lot for a guy to win the heat on the day let alone the whole comp. So therfor it should only be a cork entrant or someone studying/living in cork.

as far as i know all the house heat entrants are from cork.

the hip hop has a few 'foreigners' but is still only 5.therefore where are the cork lads spending thousands and thousands etc. to fill those spaces?

and i think theres 2 lads from dublin in the techno.

Well I dont know but its probably because there are a lot of hip hop djs out there who have spent the thousands but only a few who can scratch as i imagine it takes a lot of time and more than your average dedication.

whats the prizes this year?

one can hardly say that the dj society does not do anything for young DJ's in Cork.

Is the PROC open to just Cork people?
Indeed, is UCC is open just to Cork people?

Who cares, it ain't where ya from it's where ya at!

I'm sure if a Cork DJ won a DJ comp in Belfast or Dublin we'd all by delighted

yeah....
this whole "oh my god there's people in the ucc dj comp. that arnt from cork!" shit is getting very fucking tiresome...

listen to Mr. G. he knows a thing or 2 bout a thing or 2 at this stage
Ucc is an institution....and on that front, one that is open to anyone who wants to go to college there.

in terms of a comp. if the ucc dj comp. was limited to just ucc students then you'd have all kind shit like 10 house djs, one hip hop dj, and 2 techno djs... or something like that....i mean as it is- there are dj's entering into heats where they dont really want to be, because ---the house is full will you just play a hip hop set to make up the numbers etc. and fair enough it has to be done!! who wants to go to a heat and see one dj???

so what happens if there's a legit ucc student who is a dj and a damn good one.....but he's american... or polish... or worse still...maybe a romanian dj might enter............
???????????????????? ???????????????????? ?
when do we stop the fucking attitude.???
im surprised to be honest by members of the "dance" fraternity...

if david holmes could stick a couple of hundread catholics and prodestants into a room in belfast and make them shut the fuck up and dance coz they all liked techno...

then surely a cork dj can put up with a dublin dj in a comp.

QUESTION: What is the purpose of the Comp?

If it is to put on a good show for the audience and raise money for charity then yes by all means let whoever from anywhere int he country win.

If it is to help cork dj's make a name for themeselves and help the good talent break into the scene and help get doors opened for them then it should only be dj's living in cork.

The lads do put on a good show and do raise money for charity, so isn't it better to also help cork dj's out a little?

One can harldy say the dj soc does not help out young DJ's in Cork

If someone is good enough doors will open from them, if they are from Cork or not.

i can never understand the attitude of some cork people. There's cork people to be found in all fucking walks of life, the length and breadth of the country and beyond. Ye're like rats with longer legs. And you NEVER hear anyone from elsewhere in the country going, "he's from cork, what's he doing in our town blah blah" and ye're always welcomed and tolerated (despite that fucking accent).

And yet here ye are moaning because some people entering a dj comp in a university aren't from the city it's being held in. And it's not the first time i've heard sentiments of the same ridiculousness from cork people. Would ye ever fucking grow up.

I recommend you go back and read the posts.

The argument put forward is NOT THAT THEY ARE FROM OUT OF TOWN, the argument is we should be giving cork dj's a better opportunity of making things happen for themselves.

Its tru that if your good enough and have the commitment and drive you will succeed no matter what.

Fuck this, nuff said. thats my last word on the matter

correct me if im wrong spudgun, but did ye not have trouble finding enough entrants for the hiphop battle,

So if they did not let anyone from outside cork in, what kinda battle would it be, it would be crap just with 2/3 cork lads in it, much better with some extra from around the country entering also.

im sure if there was enough cork people wanting to enter to comntest and they were good they would take preference over outside djs, but if there isnt enough cork people willing to enter then what do you expect from the dj lads, just to shut the whole contest down due to lack of entrants, or to put on a half assed show? thats crap, and if the cork lads aint up to the standard of outside contest then all that does is make them work harder for next time, making sure they are tighter and better, so if you ask me everyone wins, people in cork pick up their tempo a bit and get more shit together. djs from all over ireland get to know each other better, and possibly cork djs get offered more gigs outside of cork, helping not just the cork scene, but the irish scene in general.

If anyone wants a cork ONLY contest, why not get off your ass and do it and try and do a better job than the UCC lads are doing/have been doing for the last few years, always helping to improve the cork scene
