ok, more news:

BIG where's me culture launch party in the mardyke on Jan 8th, tickets should be on sale end of next week - only 10 eurotrons.

The 'where's me culture mag is also going ahead - due out late jan/early feb so watch out for that. We're looking for cartoonists/writers/etc, drop me a mail if you're interested.

Is the date a deliberate set up against the official launch?
Not living in Cork, but still, drop me a PM if you want any help with the magazine.

not as such, no. Just an excuse for a party as most people feel there's nothing much happening on the 8th after the fireworks so there'll be loads of folk looking for something to go to.

Looks like a good idea jim and i hope you get the support that you need with it. I dont think the official crowd will be too concerned either because you will be attracting more attention for the city of culture events which will help them as well

1. Where's Me Culture? Big Party
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where's Me Culture? the group formed in recent weeks to offer an alternative forum for cultural events in 2005, announces its first event for 2005, a major party to take place on January 8th, the night of the official launch of Cork2005.
Since its first meeting just two weeks ago, the group has garnered huge support from a cross section of not only the artistic community, but of citizens of Cork, to whom Where's Me Culture? believe the year belongs.
The Where's Me Culture? Party takes place on Saturday January 8th at The Mardyke entertainment complex and will showcase the best of Cork's bands, DJ's, performers, artists, comedians and all shades in between. This unique venue will cater perfectly for such a diverse event, which will see simultaneous performances in different rooms; a truly celebratory showcase of Cork talent.
Already confirmed are:
* Rulers Of The Planet
* Fred
* Pontius Pilate and The Naildrivers
* Sylvia Saint
* Rest
* Sangre Latino
* Wiggle
* Angi & Hungry
* Colm Kenefick & Peter D. Kid
* Fabula
* JD & Timethought
* Simon & Mick from Bass
* DJ Fiasco
* Broz
* Mike D'Arcy
* The Rhythm Rebels (breakdance posse)
* Jim X Comet
* Phil Bergin
* Reebus
* Aideen Barry
* DJ Ed

There will also be drag, comedy and performance artists; check the website http://www.wheresmeculture. com for updates.
Saturday 8th January, also the opening day of official Cork 2005 celebrations, was chosen as a way of extending the celebrations into the night (the official celebrations end at 8.30pm!) and of offering an alternative to the many people interested in Cork 2005 who would like to be involved and included in this celebratory year.
Tickets for the event are 10 euros and are on now on sale from Plug'd Records and Kino Cinema, both on Washington St. All performers are donating their services free and all proceeds are going to the WMC? Fund.

brilliant night!!

way over capacity (1400 I heard) but just added to the buzz

all the bands i caught were excellent (rest, sylvia saint, fred and rulers)

might be a good idea to have one of these every three months during the year . . .??

at the public meeting today it was voted that some 3-4k from the big party on jan 8th would be used to buy a boat & engine for a fisherman in the tsunami hit area.

the boat will probably be christened 'where's my culture?' though 'where's my catfish' might be more appropriate.

Any thoughts on where the other 6 / 7 k may have gone Jim?
Just curious like. I was also curious about the boat decision, not begrudging the lucky fisherman like, but the event wasn't intended to be a Tsunami fundraiser was it?

Anyhoo looking forward to Big Party 2 and all that but I think i'd like to know where my moneys heading.

dunno, i'm not on the kommittee. I'm fairly sure all is above board though

not initially no, but it happened just before the party and i think the tsunami was a worthy bebeficiary. I feel it would have been churlish not to do something to help

Anyhoo looking forward to Big Party 2 and all that but I think i'd like to know where my moneys heading.

i would be surprised if many bands/performers would wave their fees this time. why should they, WMC has been as much a farce as City of Culture. There has been no sign of the money been put back into the city. This is the peoples money yet have they seen it put to use?? no. so why should we give more money????

era give them a week or two, then start laying into them if nothing has been done.

Wickitty Wac
18-05-2005, 01:22 AM
hopefully that's a week or two after the party not before!

to be fair there've been a few rumblings the last day or two about the party funds and pretty understandably too particularly since we're asking for public support again

but as someone involved with wmc? and the mag etc i think all these things will be addressed in the coming weeks and they have to be - especially before big party 2

the mag is out this weekend or at latest early next week and i think people will have a far better idea of what we've been up to what we're trying to do and why we still need as much goodwill and support as we can get - it's what started the whole thing and it's what sustains the whole thing

there's been no road map for how to proceed with the wmc? experiment and we've struggled to find our way along the way but i think we're going to be coming back strong in the coming weeks and i think and sincerely hope that people will be supportive of what we've done and what we're trying to do - the mag is the start of that process and a public meeting will help continue it and to be fair the big party is shaping up at present - there's no way it can match the madness of number one but aside from just helping keep the wmc? fire burning you should be getting a pretty cracking night into the bargain so we hope people will keep the faith and stick with us we are in the process of communicating better and more clearly

shit sorry for the long post got a bit carried away there

g'luck

nothing wrong with the question and i hope we'll be helping clear it up before big party 2 - as with above post the mag will give some indication and the info in it, of what party funds have allowed us to develop and work on - also see some current posts on wmc? site

Wmc? Have Done Nothing So Far For The City Or For Culture.

Jim Comic

corkspace project
vehicle project
and a few other projects on the boil, the full details of which i don't have to hand, wmc has no great funds that i know of and (as far as I understand it) is set up more as a conduit than anything else, i know several people and groups who have gained from it in that they've met people who were able to help them with their projects and wee problems they had.

If nothing else comes out of wmc then the corkspace project alone was worth the time and effort of mr ray c who set it up (kudos to him).

Wmc? Have Done Nothing So Far For The City Or For Culture.

jeez i disagree - that's very harsh

nothing signifies exactly that, nothing

so what about meetings, conversations, debates, the party, the website, the magazine, corkspace, space-hoppers, petitioning city council to make kyrls quay a cultural zone and handing out flyers of our alternative architectural competition to the suits going into the danial leibeskind lecture, plus much help and assistance to those who look for it from us online - such as FMC music showcase thingy (thanks to Tikki), graffitti expo forthcoming weekend after next, media requests for information and an alternative view on the year, liasing with youth groups over from Liverpool for whom no 2005 person would meet, facilitating a load of swedish choir dudes to sing their hearts out at farmgate in the market on saturday at 11.30 for which no 2005 person would assist - were all those things not things wmc was set up to do?

plus we've been developing a whole range of projects that we are endeavouring to see happen this summer including vehicle project, big picnic and culture world cup not to mention getting the ball rolling on a project that should see a mardi gras street festival in cork city centre over the summer

it ain't easy - there isn't an instruction manual for how to be an ad-hoc arts organisation and indeed we're more than just that anyway

so jeez i'm not saying to not ask questions or make comments but the truth is we are doing our level best to drag as much together as we possibly can and i think we're getting somewhere at long last

so give us a bit of faith more and a bit of time more - keep in touch with the site, check out the mag this weekend and hopefully ye'll all see just what we've been hussling up and furiously arranging over the last months

also i hope many of ye'll still want to be involved in helping make things happen

anyway enough for now
ta gonzo for the stimulating post - i feel better now after getting that out!! lol

Just wanted to rant about this and figured I throw it in here...

So Ive been reading a lot of the controversial crap about 2005 - nothing being done bla bla bla. Ok I agree, its a bit of a let down as far as the organisers are concerned. But its time to stop giving out about that and get off our asses and do somethin to make this year special. I think the WMC are an inspiration and we should all be doin somethin to bring a little culture to Cork. I think gigs wise, this year is fantastic. How often do we get legends like Brian Wilson and Nick Cave just down the road? The fact that Cork is city of culture has attracted all these festivals and gigs and I think that in itself is a success. What we need to do is organise our own events. Its simple, fun and rewarding. Im not tooting my own horn, but if a bunch of teenagers can get off our asses and organise our own events, then so can everyone else.
