Just a few positive comments on Red that I think are worth mentioning.

I feel Red has improved since they moved some of the more inexperienced DJs on to the daytime slots.

In particular I think KC and Stevie G sound good in the slots they wouldn't be musically attached to. KC sounds comfortable in the morning and actually makes Viv sound much better than she did. Charlie Wolfe seemed to impose his personality on the show and when she spoke she just sounded like a giggling teenager on work experience.

Now KC and Viv sound more like equals....maybe like they might be friends and get along when the mic is turned off. Her mild Cork accent is strangely refreshing.

Its good to hear somebody like Stevie G on the radio as well in the afternoon when you walk into a shop. He sounds like somebody you'd know yourself which for me is the reason I can tolerate afternoon and evening Red but not 96.

Colm O'Sullivan sounds much more at ease now as well the few times I've heard him. Well done to them.

Saying all that I still think Cork is crying out for real community radio - another license with a not so commercial outlook.

I'll probably get grief for saying this, especially as the guy seems to be generally thought of a legend, (& he probably is but I don't know him personally so I can't comment), but I have to admit I can't listen to the show anymore since Stevie took over. His voice kinda gets on my nerves.

What we need is someone to shake the music up its more like 96. DYPoff went from 4hrs to 0 house music in 2years.

I think you could say that about any radio DJ.

Not all of them, there's one or two who amuse me...

red died on day one when they publicly decided to "provide for corks minority listener groups" and actually quickly decided to become 96fm.

car-key roulette anyone?
same CD recording used every hour as a tracklisting anyone...

i dont see why they cant, say, put on some mixtapes of the old friendly crew late at night when theres nobody there anyway?skidmarks?mis s kenn d?cork would love them...

What about asking 97.4 Cork Campus Radio to do just that? - at the moment CCR broadcast nothing at night, its not going to get in the way of their existing programmes?

Could be a bit tricky...as it would be seen they are endorsing a pirate station.

It wouldn't go down well if they were trying to renew their license

Jim Comic

not really, tons of people in 'official' radio started in pirates, all they'd have to do is get the skidmarks folk to make up new playlists and all would be covered legally.

A lot of official stations see the pirates as a cheap way of training staff, if someone gets good enough and popular enough (which totally rules me out!) then sooner or later they'll be picked up by a mainstream station, that's how peel, fanning, stevie g, greg & shane and thousnads others made the jump.

no,ive had a long "discussion"with the campus station, and they arent really willing to do anything musically,or interesting programming outside hours.

best not to even engage in conversation with them.
a training ground for future mick mulcahys seems all they're aimed at providing!

Its not due to unwillingness its more to do with the fact they dont have the resources to purcahse a license for the evenings.

They are always looking for all types of shows, its just most dont get up off their ass and try and get one.

You can listen to the DJ Societies show this Thursday from 1-2pm with Drew and Crossan.

Shameless plug...

red fm really need 2 change there music policy.. and get back the younger edge back again.. they must have done lots of music surveys BUT there asking the wrong people cause if u ask 10 people about red fm music most of them will tell u its crap.. like 4 example morning retro marathon its so boring then the presenter keeps saying after every link ''red fm corks no1 for hit music'' there is so much new music around at the moment .. so why play boring oldies that even 96fm dont even play.. and the weekends friday is great then after pete tong its gone tottely crap again boring music .. why not put on long play house mixes or even disco house.. cause there is a lot of around and that style is making a very big come back.. and noone is doing it.. stevie g is also good on drive time OK he has a cork accent SO WOT were from cork and also he could be just be the man 2 open the gates 2 other cork sounding dj's.. if you listen 2 pirates most of them sound corky.. BUT if u listen 2 them they can accully grow on you if they were only given the chance.. if you listen 2 uk radio or even watch tv (ch 4).. u will here some major horribe accents.. but they do grow on you 4 example why is Graham Norton so big... because he has such a funny accent thats why..

right, i'm not reading that on principle alone... first of all, the first sentence reads: "redfm really need 2 change there music policy"... nuff said... and secondly that whole post is in bold print... why does it need to be in bold?..

alright spudgun.

yeah the thing is,i went into the studio on pretty much my first day of college and saw ONE deck.bad start.then asked if they were allowed to play the music they wanted.i was told NO.then i asked if they HAD to stop early in the evening-YES.

then came the info from...i cant remember who at the station, saying that their license forced them to talk a large percentage of the time.and my telecomms lecturer laughing at the "poor optimisation of facilities in their transmitting equipment".

end conclusion-a waste of time!

and i know its just my opinion, and i know i have strong views, but fuck it,there you go.

Yip your right there's one deck but a few things,
we do not impose a playlist on the volunteers and our license is a community radio license which does not allow 24/7 music we have a speech ratio of 60% which I’m quite happy about

when it comes to the stations output you want to hear tunes that fine, but some pep like the docs we broadcast so much so they ring up to say they enjoyed them one that comes to mind is our 6-part series documenting life in Cork Prison (the men's committal prison on Rathmore Road) it won the Justice Media Award Dec 2004 (Law Society of Ireland)

We broadcast from 8.00 am to 5.30 pm five days a week 50 weeks of the year and we provide a service for people looking for something different in the mornings and afternoons as for "poor optimization of facilities in their transmitting equipment".

The aerial is a directional aerial facing towards the city centre so you’re in a black spot but we get a good 20 miles from the station.

Hay ! We are very open to new ideas and we have music shows that cover all tastes. the slots may have been full when you called up. Mick is dead sound but as a training ground for one type of presentation you wrong again and as for your “best not to even engage in conversation with them.” That’s harsh

In my experience campus are great, they have interesting djs who play different kinds of music, not just the killers 24/7, and they are supportive of local bands too.

Campus Radio are five star! Hopefully they can extend their licence or get a new one. They would definitely give Mick Mulcahy a run for his money.

I have to say this....

I really enjoy Red FM - KC and Viv in my humble opinion are very entertaining.

Greg & Shane's show is a must listen.

And Stevie reminds us that it's OK to have a Cork accent onthe radio and that it's not essential to hide it behind a some trans atlantic drivel.

They cater for guest mixes on Friday nights.

And the daytime music isn't bad.

I spend about half of my day, 0700 - 1700, in the car and I listen to Red FM.

Charlie Wolfe does annoy the tits off me tho'!

red fm is grand way better than 96fm, 96's tracklisting is awful. probably picked by a deaf man trapped down a well. i think though listen to campus radio, gonna do a cool show with crossan if pp allows ;-) next term

It's very easy, with the best of intentions (and frustration)to over-simplify a problem thats highly more complex, political and bureaucratic than you realise.you were'nt the first to want to explore alternatives to what they were offering and you won't be the last, but dont blame the messenger - try the politions, broadcaste rs,legit (money driven ) stations!unfortunate ly they hold the power!
also remember that the station was only a twinkle in Mr paws eye while suffering all the noise-merchants in the old bar at lunchtimes, look at what he has achieved against the odds(and bullshit of playing their game!)
it also won previous awards thanks to other people who commited their time and effort, such as redFm's Colm O Sullivan, who has also won awards(and the respect of his peers) for Red.
Remember this is a game that we think is unfair, because we don't understand the rules, and blame the players.the fact is that the rules are unfair....do you still want to play....some do!

just saw this...yeah i posted that AAAAGES ago...

i was posting to (i think)the person who ran it,a fair while back and they explained the (major) constraints within which the station had to work.i fully understand that its all down to the powers that be,though, but that wont stop me resenting it slightly...

at least the shops play it,and such these days...whats the point in being a campus radio,if the places on campus wont play you!

I was in campus radio ten years ago when it all started and to be fair the restrictions imposed by the licence are fairly limiting - 60% speech content plus only so many hours a day. That said it was and still is I'm sure a great training ground for those who want to go into the media full time particularly for those on the news side of things.

Campus Radio wasn't set up to be a legal version of radio friendly or any other pirate. In my time there listeners were few but the effort and work put into the shows there would put any pirate and many commercial stations to shame.
