hey guys.

i'm just wondering if anyone can offer some advice about music for a wedding reception. i'm trying to help my sister plan the music for her wedding reception next may and i'd love if you could recommend a great DJ/band/anything else you can think of that might suit. there will be a lot of people there from overseas, and she'd definitely prefer not to have a cheesey wedding band playing boring standards like danny boy!!

thanks a million, i really appreciate your help.

yeah i was at a wedding that the roaring forties played at a few weeks ago - they have great tunes and a good look. The wedding was split over a few rooms so they had to work hard to get people going but they did and the floor was full by the time they finished. As for the DJ set - try picking a few good tunes by decade - 50's,60's,70's etc. (and remember you don't have to use the "jive bunny" (spit) versions of the old tunes!) Also do a few searches for party compilations on the likes of amazon or play.com - they'll give you a few ideas about what you want so you can make sure you're getting what you want from your prospective DJ

or you could buy the Chic 'best of' and stick that on - every song a winner ;-)
or just play ghost town by the specials over and over...everyone rise for the national anthem

I'd recommend Iain Richardson, the friendliest sound engineer/wedding DJ in Cork.

He does weddings on the side and will play whatever you ask of him.

Was at a wedding last summer and the band were J-90, they were absolutely brilliant. Played all modern-ish music, rocked up a bit, and played some old traditionals totally rocked up. They had the whole crowd up! Not my cup on tea on a normal night out, but for a wedding, they were really class.

Kieran Kramer is really good.

If you have a bit of cash to throw around......Blue Moose or Glitterbugs will really get the place going

on my wedding i had a trad Irish group doing the live stuff initially (went down a storm btw), and after that a DJ playing all the cheesy tunes - the cheesier the better.. put people into a really good mood like, and it worked... (disco stuff like Ymca, Rock the boat, Boys boys boys, loadsa Abba/Bee Gees and loads more... godawfully cheesy, but happy at the same time.. and even yer gran would like it...)

I would recommend Sangre Latino... they do salsa, latino, manu chao covers, that kind of thing... they're very good at what they do, and get everyone dancing and they probably won't cost an arm and a leg... not cheesy, yet not too abstract for anyone... perfect balance... they've done plenty of weddings, and do festivals all over west cork and were regulars in Casanova (above the triskel arts centre) when it was open... pm me if you want more info...

I'm also on the lookout for a wedding band at the moment and someone mentioned the Zodiacs to me.
Does anyone know if they are any good?

Cheers

They're the best. But they're quite heavily booked for this year. Contact George on 0861282435

get the wedding band from "old school"

"Fuckin' every now and then I fall apart and I need you now tonight. I fuckin' need you more than ever"

would go down a charm!!!

My 2 cents.

Get the wedding couple involved in the decision - otherwise if the band/music turns out to be shite guess who will be carrying the can?

If they are big into music themselves, get them to make up a list of all the songs they want played. You may wish to include certain songs for certain VIP guests - e.g. the favourite songs of people who came a long way etc

Then find a DJ who is willing to forego his own musical tastes and play *only* what's on the list. You'd be amazing how many of them feckers will make a policy decision half way through that the play list is rubbish and revert to their own crap - jive bunny covers etc

hope this helps.

'Til death do us party', not on the scene long but absolutely brilliant! The best wedding band I've seen. The floor was full all night long, they do great versions of cheesy 80s tunes at the end, take on me and ghostbusters, particularly memorable! They may be from Dublin I think, but they travel as I saw them in Clare.
