Not bullied into this but I believe in balance and my yin was way out of line with my yang...so...

They make great actors. Even on "The Bill" the acting is better than most American prime time shows. And they make me laugh. Michael Palin, Paul Whitehouse, Caroline Aherne, Robbie Coltrane, Ricky Tomlinson. All genius.

They've had the longest running democracy in western history, they are very good at making pies, they have lovely folk music (thai is all the English, I'm talking about, by the way), amazing literature, nice countryside, a great capital city, the best desserts, and they invented the gin and tonic.

The Thames glistening beneath you, the London Eye and Parliament off in the distance, on the other side London Bridge, Tower Bridge, the Tate Modern.

Put a lump in your throat so it would.
'specially if someone snuck up behind you and started singing:

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

*sigh*
yeah - dont remind me....

and the CJB has been used to stop anti-road protests, green protests and loads of others. classic example of using tabloid "ecstasy hell" scare stories to get anti-democratic legislation passed

more recently the "anti-terror" laws passed after 9/11 were used to round up protestors going to demonstrate against an arms fair in London.

Basically, the government over here can break up demonstrations it doesnt like.

oul'doll
26-06-2004, 09:33 PM
A "crowd" of 10 or more people listening to repetitive beats constitutes a rave and can be shut down. For fecks sake.

smirkingchimp
26-06-2004, 09:38 PM
somebody discovered a loophole recently - there were illegal , small, raves going on in farmers out buildings and barns last year and the cops couldnt do anything.

but it was perfectly legal - i think it had to do with the location (isolated) and not creating a "nuisance" i.e. loud enuff to wake up loads of ppl to complain....

plus the rave was on private land , so the cops couldnt go onto it - cos they'd need a warrant.

trouble was - the barn was around 5 miles away for the farmhouse (BIG farm like), so the auld farmer didnt suspect a thing like ( tucked up in bed , knackered like)

Several illegal raves happened in London last year using private buildings , owned by banks and such like, but not used or rented out to anyone.

Same deal - cops would have to get a warrant to shut them down. by the time they got it , too late - rave over...

oul'doll
26-06-2004, 09:41 PM
I can see why they were trying to curb the explosion of ecstasy use, but trying to stamp out the actual events was never going to work. Its total Nanny-stating.

smirkingchimp
26-06-2004, 10:09 PM
yeah - and fat lot of good that did. average E consumption per WEEK is estimated to be between 500,000 and 2 million.

which is what the polticians planned for anyway - the CJB and susequent laws have made the UK probably the most policed and dictatorial states in the EU.

in other words - i miss Cork like!

I'm a bigot. I've already admitted that. That was the original point of this thread to try and convince me otherwise. I've miles of reasons for my bone marrow dislike of the brits and about a thimble full of reasons to like them. But the beauty is I've absolutely no guilt whatsoever regarding it. And when I find a better hairdresser I'll dismiss Manchester like I would a used kleenix. There are too many coming over here. And if you ask them why 9 times out of 10 it will be because of the "coloured situation". So now our company is less troublesome to them than their immigrant population. Who's the bigot's?

No. It doesn't apply Mr. Defender of the Realm. You obviously haven't read it as I have. It doesn't apply to nationality or adherence to political philosophy or we wouldn't have anything to talk about on this board. I am equally disgusted... I am disgusted by those who adher to the concept of monarchy and the insistence of an empire which has long past reached it's sell by date. I dislike anyone who subscribes to that philosophy regardless of religion, skin colour or what kind of music they listen to.

However as much as I dislike those who do coming to live in my country I would never succumb to the bigotry of telling them to "fuck off back to their own country". I was raised better than that.

No just a very high percentage of the one's I've met as I've stated. Didn't you once state you didn't like Italy? Did you go everywhere? Did you meet all the Italians?

I've been quite clear on my bigotry from day one. And my experience and background would back up my contempt. I don't hate them. Hate requires emotion and I've none for most of them. And once again I'm only referring to the toff's, not the working class, not the immigrants, unless, of course they opt to become uniformed thugs like their countrymen in the 6 counties.

Now I am finished with this. I've been very honest and have never shied from my opinions. Dislike me, disregard me. It's irrelevant. I will continue to respect your views and opinions even if you don't mine.

The best thing about England is obviously Glastonbury, closely followed by Oxford.

Charlatan. Only someone who hasn't been to Oxford would think it's a nice place. Horrible, dirty, industrial town. There's another place to the east which is quite nice though.

I was born there and spent a few summers there. Most of it is rotten, but the historic part is gorgeous. Anyway, it was the me being born part that qualified it.

They make great actors. Even on "The Bill" the acting is better than most American prime time shows. And they make me laugh. Michael Palin, Paul Whitehouse, Caroline Aherne, Robbie Coltrane, Ricky Tomlinson. All genius.

Lots of great books written by English people.

Most of the infrastructure they built here is still functioning and of a higher quality than that produced after they left.

If it wasn't for them we'd probably all be speaking German.

On a serious note, Their Comedy, Literature, Films are generally of a far higher standard than anywhere else, Maybe the French come close. They generally have the ability not to take themselves too seriously.

you still consider English as a foreign language?

My point was (as you well know) that if not for Britan then Germany would have eventually got around to us. What that would have implied for Ireland I don't know.

Probably it would have been a bad thing.

My point was the fact that Britan was there acted as a buffer between us and the third Reich. Although they may well have left us alone anyway as we just weren't important enough to us.

Universal coverage means that you are fully covered for healthcare even if you can't afford it.

Depending on your income you contribute a percentage of the cost on a progressive scale.

In Britain you have NI, so it's not free by any means.

No, you don't pay the NHS for an operation, do you?

The NHS operates in a far more indirect and inefficient fashion.

You only pay if you can afford it. If you have a low wage you pay practically nothing.

If, however, you earn 100k a year, you probably pay like 50% etc etc.

Comprende?

In Britain there are people getting tit enlargements on the NHS while people die needlessly due to inadaquate cancer services. :rolleyes:e

The NHS is free to anyone irrespective of their income level.
It doesn't cost anything to see your local GP and it doesn't cost anything if you're admitted to hospital or require treatment.
X-rays, MRI scans, operations, drugs and anything else you receive in hospital are free.
There is a standard prescription charge of Ł7.20 per item based on each item and not the actual cost of the drug.
People on low income or unemployed do not have to pay prescription charges.
Doctors do not charge for writing a prescription or repeat prescription.
However, as in any free healthcare programme, things are not perfect and some people opt to go private by either paying upfront or through health insurance.
There are also still some dentists who are also part of the NHS but their number is declining.
The NHS is probably the thing Britain ought to be most proud of .
