Govt scrapping tax relief on bin charges04/02/2010 - 16:09:10

The Government is scrapping tax relief on bin charges from next year.

The measures are contained in the Finance Bill which Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has published this afternoon.

The bill also sees the introduction of VAT on some public services from July.

It also aims to close tax avoidance loopholes as well as imposing the Budget tax decisions.

The minister has introduced a new package of measures to make Ireland more attractive to highly skilled foreign workers.

The bill also gives effect to measures announced in the Budget including the introduction of a 200 thousand levy on the super rich.

The relief on bin charges is claimed a year behind so this year's charges will be paid out next year.

Another new measure will see local authorities and Government bodies forced to charge VAT from this July on services such as waste collection, recycling, toll charges and parking.
Water charges, public transport and health have not been hit.

A raft of tax avoidance measures - including 26 cases where losses of €400m were artificially generated to avoid capital gains tax are being introduced.

Revenue will be given new powers to gather information and to seize false documents - a power they haven't had up to now.

Measures to make Ireland attractive for Islamic investment and compliant with Shari'a Law are also included.

Well I want to change to Greenstar but my husband wont have it. He says he would hate to see Corporation workers lose their jobs. He said that the Council would stop collecting waste and then operators could charge what they want. IS HE RIGHT.

If you have a half decent sized garde. It's AMAzing how much wAste you can get rid to minimise your charges.

I've got two wormerys on the go and three compost bins and I reckon I'll get me one of those 'big pig' yokes in the next month or so too

what do you expect to happen? the government needs cash fairly lively and the public sector are reluctant to have pay cuts (or even freezes) so they have to get it from somewhere

The change doesn't take effect until 2012.

By which time a new government will get the blame.
