Vaccine Paranoia.
Dr Andrew Wakefield who almost single handed started one the worlds greatest Health Scares has finally been discredited by the British medical Council.
In a research paper published in 1998 he suggested a link between MMR vaccine, autism and bowel disorders in children.
He concealed the fact that he was on a retainer from a legal firm in litigation with the producers of the MMR vaccine and that the parents of the 12children chosen in the study were anti vaccine and had in interest in the outcome of any such litigation.
The resultant publicity resulted in millions of parents in Britian and Ireland boycotting the MMR vaccine for their children.Vaccination levels dropped below 80% which was invariably followed by outbreaks of measles and mumps and also unfortunately resulted in the needless death of some children.
10 of the 13 authors of the paper subsequently dissaccociated themselves from the article and the bowel disorders were shown to be coincidental and common disorders of children.
Dr Wakefield refuses to apologise and retract and is planning to start a clinic in Texas much to the alarm of the American medical authorities who fear a drop in MMR vaccination rates and an upsurge in outbreaks in children.
The MMR vaccine is credited with saving 9 million lives per year worldwide.
