Just thought we'd let you know this year's Cork Better Building Awards (http://lifestyle.cometocork .ie/index.php/awards/better-building-awards/) will launch this week at the Bodega. Property / Business owners can apply online here (http://survey.constantconta ct.com/survey/a07e2jod3p0fx7e8she/a0111fxor533v/greeting) . We will also be promoting Cork heritage pubs around this time so any historic tales would be more than welcome. Steve

How exactly are you gonna do that? I'm all for it, espeically if linked in with local beer and whiskey production.

There's a couple of historic pubs here in Oxford that have links with a few dozen other pubs in Britain, they've got a nice little guide and if you visit five of them, you get a free tshirt. Not my deal, but it's certainly good cross-promotion.

Is there a version of beerintheevening.com for Ireland or Cork? There should be, it's very useful:

Incidentally, any chance of getting a bogey "Worst Building In Cork" award? I think that would really help to raise standards and there'd be a lot of good nominations.

I think this is a fantastic idea. Cork's built heritage has been absolutely raped by developers in the past few decades.
I'd be interested to see what many people's idea of good conservation is though. When I go to Cork, I'm horrified to see how historic buildings are ripped down with just the façade left standing under the pretence that corks historic streetscapes are being preserved. Its a slap inthe face to anyone who gives two shites about the cities rich architectural heritage, which is being destroyed at a very fast pace.

If memory serves, that eastern block style prison... I mean student accommodation out at Victoria Cross won something like that a couple of years ago.

That website you posted above is great. I wasn't very impressed with the pubs of Oxford at first but there are definately a few hidden gems.

Hidden doesn't even begin to describe how well some pubs are concealed!

I've written a few reviews of pubs in there that have subsequently been added to. I find the rankings to be relatively accurate, good, interesting pubs get good ratings and increased business.

yeah, i'll have to try some of the ones with high ratings on there that i haven't been to.... i'd also be interested to stick my head into a few of the pubs with particularly bad ratings but I may come out without it.

The building awards are a good idea in principle. Who are the judges? I presume by not giving us details of the launch at the Bodega that its a private affair?

BTW I'd love to know how much City Council are paying to maintain that website.
