A bit obvious but no Munster players of course.

Fenians should not be Captains of an Empire, they don't possess the indomitable British bulldog fighting spirit need to win a test series

Captain of the best Lions team ever = Willie John McBride.

Wille John would shit a brick if he had to face down Johnno.

BOD would tear the head of McBride

Who was captain of the Lions in New Zealand during the last tour? :twisted:A lions tour to South Africa is the biggest test of them all, McBride was moulded by the granite of his British heritage and did not let the side down, Martin Johnson said his Lions tour victory in 1997 far outweighs his world cup victory in 2003

Paul O’Connell let himself down. Micks are not meant to lead the empire. Like the Dricster, Ciaran Fitzgerald and Karl Mullen before him, POC didn’t have that necessary bulldog spirit to lead in the heat of battle, in case you are not aware, Big Bill was of British Stock, a fighting giant to lead the loins

BOD said he was a great captain and leader in South Africa

Martyn Williams said he was the best captain he has ever played under and he had Martin Johnson as Captain as a Lion.

POC cheapened what it meant to be loins captain, thankfully, it will be long time before a mick is given the honor of leading the empire again

The same willy john mcbride who still thinks he did nothing wrong by taking a team to a country under where no black players were allowed on the national side, thus condoning apartheid.

Back in the 70s a tour to N.Z. was the biggest by far and the 1971 tour there finished as follows Lions 2 - 1 N.Z. 1 draw.

Plenty of other sportsmen, singers and businessmen used to deal with S.A. and nothing was ever said. Rugby always took the shit. Did people complain about the De Bieers plant in Shannon or the availability of S.A. oranges in our supermarkets? Like fcuk they did.
During the 1960s parts of the USA had laws which clearly discriminated against black people but this was always forgotten due to our special ties with said country.
Although I think that aparthied was terrible, I'm shit sick of "plastic saints" who moralise and criticise Rugby while forgetting other issues that they may feel uncomfortable with.

You are wrong about the tour to New Zealand, a Loins tour to South Africa is the pinnacle of test rugby, that boer war business has not been forgotten in the corridors of power

Wrong!
The All-Blacks have always been the biggest test and they have been made favourites for practically every W.C. since the tournament started.
There must be a reason for this.
If colonial wars are so important why don't we see a Lions tour of Crossbarry Kilmichael etc.....

What about the staff of dunnes stores. Lowly shop workers who stood up and said enough is enough. They were prepared to lose their jobs at a time when this country was on it's arse, but the "great" willie john mcbride was content to pretend as if SA was a land love and equality.

True enough HM83 but the vast majority of people still passed their pickets though!
Economic sanctions were in place at that time but they had nothing to do with equality. The simple fact was that S.A. had a very powerful economy and apartheid was used as an excuse. A little like the American Civil War really which had more to do with economic issues than the abolition of slavery.
I've never agreed with the apartheid system and neither can I stand the moralistic bullshit that some people come out with.

The fact of the matter is that the springboks were the posterboys for apartheid. By going over there the lions made a statement to the world that they had no problem with it.

Your point is very convenient. What about other sportspeople, singers and businessmen who openly had contacts with S.A?
Just to repeat, I hated the apartheid system but the moralistic crap directed against Rugby is hypocracy of the highest order.
So everyone who wwent to the Olympics in Hitler's Germany were Nazis?
