Back in the 60s and early 70s Hibs and Celtic had big crowds on derby day whether it was in the lodge or the box.
Who did your oul man support? Any good stories from that era?
My oul fella was an avid Cork Celtic fan and brought me to games down in Turners Cross as a kid. He hated Hibs and went to there games in Flower Lodge to support whoever they were playing.

Hibs!
Lived near Flower Lodge and it was the days when you could ask an adult to lift you over the turnstiles to get in free.
Wiggy,Bacuzzi,Herric k,Carl Humphries all legends at the time.
The Derbys were incredible and used to attract 15,000 upward..some good European games there aswell.I seem to recall that Celtic played a lot of their European ties at the Lodge..have a vague memory of them playing Omnia Nicoose(spelling) of Cyprus and CSKA Moscow.

As a kid in the 70s I was a huge Hibs fan and I was at "The Lodge" for all their home games. Other heroes were Carl (The Dav) Davenport, Miah Dennehy, Sonny Sweeney, John Lawson, Tony Marsden, Martin (Fada) Sheenan, Frankie Connolly, Donie Wallace & Noel O Mahony.
European games I remember were against Valencia, Borrusia Monchengladback (European Cup), Pesoporikos from Cyprus and Schalke 04. L.O.I. games against Waterford were always great and there were 27,000 in "The Lodge" for the final league game of the 71/72 season. Dundalk and Limerick had handy sides back then too.
No Sky Sports - happy days! :D

You could well be right..I just remember it was a Czechlosovakian side. For some reason I seem to think that Hibs lost 2-1.....
I remember the Hibs -Celtic derbys and Bobby Tambling not coming out for the national Anthem...I mentioned this before on the PROC..but do you remember why?
Remember Rodney Marsh scoring an amazing free kick where someone flicks the ball up and he volleys it..it has since been outlawed.

Tambling was a Jehovas Witness and that was probably the reason.
I was at that game when Marsh scored that goal. A lot of "past their best players" from abroad played for the 2 Cork sides. Geoff Hurst, Uwe Seeler and George Best all played for Celtic and Rodney Marsh for Hibs. Apparently in the 1950s Riatch Carter also played in Cork. :-)

Yep Tambling was sent to Cork on missionary work for the jehova
WItnesses and that is why he joined Celtic.
raich carter did play in cork in the 50s. players could earn more in
Irish soccer due to the wage cap in England.

He was past his best when he came to Cork and was paid per match. He was a huge attraction in the L.O.I. and for the away games the Leesiders used to insist on the home team paying the wages, which they were always very happy to do.
Getting back to Hibs:
Dave Wiggington (Wiggie) worked in Jackie Lennox's as he was married to Frances Lennox at the time. He later opened his own place "Wiggies".
Carl Davenport (The Dav) married one of the Crosbies, (De Paper) crowd.
From what I know both pairs broke up afterwards. :-|

My dad and I both supported Hibs. Yeah I'm old enough. Went to de Lodge many times. Watched my heroes Wiggie, Miahhhh, Tony Marsden, Sweeney, Carl Davenport, Dave Bacuzzi, etc. etc. kick the ever-loving shit out of most teams at the time. (Celtic had a peculiarly good record against Hibs though if I remember - ould Alec Ludzic throwing himself around the place theatrically and all.) :)
Saw the game against Watherfurd where they were 2-0 up with about 15 minutes to go and lost it 3-2 to lose the league. ('72 I believe). Stones and bottles flying. Then a week later, they smoked 'em 3-0 in the FAI Cup Final. Miah hat trick. Saw dat too biy. Plus I saw my all-time City (Manchester variety) hero play for them; Rodney Marsh; on one of his little earners. End of the fucking rainbow for me that was.
Hibs all the way. But after they folded, I did go and watch Celtic a couple of times. Not quite the same though. But a Cork team nonetheless.

Gunther Netzer played at The Lodge in the E.C, in Sept. 1971.
In European Nations semi in 1972 W.Germany destroyed England 1-3 at Wembley and Netzer was the main man. He later signed for Real Madrid, surprise surprise!

Remember both Watherfurd games and when Hibs folded I didn't go to the Cross as it was an awful shithole at the time, if the weather was anyway wet.
Celtic folded not long afterwards and for a while we had Cork Alberts, Cork United and finally Cork City. :)

I can't remember which variety of Cork that played Man City back in '81 at the Cross. That was my last time there. I think they were Cork United at the time? It was either that or Alberts. I remember they brought in Eddie O' Halloran from Cobh for the game to play at left back against Tommy Hutchison.
I also remember being gutted that Trevor Francis was injured and couldn't play.
And I also remember freezing my arse off while hitching back down to Wesht Cork that evening...;)

I really enjoyed reading this thread.Wasn't Miah Dennehy the city's original pin up boy before JBM came on the scene a year later?Sadly Miah got seriously injured in an assault outside a pub in Mayfield a few years ago. That really was an unique time and i would have loved to have been around to get a feel for the excitement in the city during that era. George Best and Geoff Hurst playing for Celtic even if George was a flop and Rodney Marsh playing for hibs and didn't Bobby Charlton also play for Waterford United around that time as well? That era was unique in that you had the two Cork clubs Hibs and Celtic and Waterford United dominating the league.

Celtic appeared from nowhere in 1974 to win the LOI and then went back to oblivion. Waterford and Hibs were the dominating teams in the early-mid 70s.

Raised on stories of that time. The old fella was a die hard Celtic fan but used go to the Lodge every other weekend. Someone's said it already but that must have been great with big crowds pre the Sky Sports days. Can't bate live sport!
There's a book called from the Lodge to the Box (or vice versa

Sorry to come back in after so long but the mention of the Lodge and all the rest has got me going. Reading the Dav's 'book' a while back was a hoot and brought a lot back.
Anyone remember going to the Sports Club in the Lodge to watch MOTD before multi_channel and being charged to get in? I was only a youth and the reception was brutal/sh**te but it was like 'hollywood' at the time for soccer starved fanatics.
Anyway, the best gear Hibs ever had was the green shorts and the white top; didn't like the Birmingham white stripe down the middle version.
Good luck from nostalgia central in exile.
