O’KEEFFE REBUTTAL STUNS RATHCORMAC

Outspoken Fianna Fail TD Ned O’Keeffe has confirmed that he told the chairperson of the parents' council of a local national school that ‘there are no votes for Fianna Fail' in the school’s village when approached for help in securing funding from the Department of Education.

Claire O’Flynn, chairperson of Rathcormac’s Scoil Bhride Parents' Council said that Deputy O’Keeffe made the ‘disgraceful’ remarks when she contacted him on the ongoing issue of overcrowding and the reliance on temporary classrooms at the school.

“He said that he had no votes in Rathcormac and that he would only speak to people in places where he had votes. He said that as far as Fianna Fail were concerned Rathcormac was ‘no use to us’ and asked me who I voted for,” Mrs O’Flynn said.

Mrs O’Flynn added that Deputy O’Keeffe suggested that his son, Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe, polled badly in the village at the recent local elections.

“Of course the people of Rathcormac will support their local man,” she continued, referring to newly elected Fine Gael Cllr Pa O’Driscoll - a Rathcormac native - “but surely politicians should realise that it’s not a vote against the others.”

Speaking to The Avondhu Deputy O’Keeffe reiterated his belief that there are no votes for his party in Rathcormac.

“I also said what was told to the people of Rathcormac already by the Minister for Education Batt O’Keeffe, that the new school would be built when the Government has the funds to do so,” he added.

How does he get people to vote for him?

Very simple, he "sorts" out problem for people re planning, probs with the Gaurds, and how to screw every penny you can from CAP. Then the yokels love him(and his son) never mind that he jumps on every bandwagon going(see his "resignation" from FF last year over health issues), has the biggest pig farm in Ireland(and a fairly big polluter), is one of the biggest beneficiaries of CAP in the country.

Makes you proud to be Irish really.:crazyeye:

O’Keeffe’s quip on nuclear plant sparks furore

By Eoin English
Tuesday, May 26, 2009
MAVERICK Fianna Fáil TD Ned O’Keeffe sparked a furious reaction last night when he said Ireland’s first nuclear power station could be built on his farm.
The backbencher, running as the party’s second candidate in the European elections in the Ireland South constituency, made the quip during a live radio debate with candidates.

"The French have nuclear fuel and the British have nuclear fuel and we have to be competitive and move forward," he said.

The location of a nuclear plant would be a matter for the authorities, he said, before adding: "I’ve a farm that’s worth very little at the moment so it’s available to use."

The Mitchelstown-based Cork East TD was speaking on the Last Word with Matt Cooper on Today FM after he was asked for his opinion on incineration.

His comments were greeted by a mixture of laughter from the live audience and shock from other candidates.

Fine Gael MEP Colm Burke accused Mr O’Keeffe of making "flippant facetious remarks" and of not taking the election or the issues seriously.

"We are no longer in boomy bertieland. These are serious times," said Mr Burke.

"People are in very difficult circumstances – in some cases there are couples with children and a mortgage who have lost their jobs.

"I had two people break down and cry in front of me, within 20 minutes of each other, in Midleton the other day. People are very seriously affected by this recession.

"We need to be serious about who we are sending out to Brussels."

Mr O’Keeffe is no stranger to controversy. In 1997, he was appointed Minister of State at the department of agriculture but he had to resign in 2001 when it emerged he had voted on a Dáil motion without declaring he had a beneficial interest in the subject matter.

He resigned the party whip in November 2007 when he was forced to vote confidence in Health Minister Mary Harney. He was re-admitted to the parliamentary party in February.

While I agree with Nuclear power Myself, I don't think smack bang in the middle of the most productive farming area in the country is the right place for it. And before anyone says it only because I'm next door to his farm, I supported plans for both a Bio Diesel plant and an Anorobic Digester in the locality.

He won't. Ireland is like that politically. The majority are gombeens. look who's in power and look at the result of the last Lisbon vote.

Ireland is backward politically.
